Of the Mariners’ Top 30 prospects on MLB Pipeline, there are only three who are Rule 5-eligible: Along with Julio, OF Alberto Rodríguez, acquired from Toronto in the Taijuan Walker trade in

this is who to trade....for the mariners....if anyone is interested.....lets face it.......they cant keep...them all
they were in kerr...already traded reliever in their system in LHP Ray Kerr, who actually

Also, as a point of clarification, RHP Juan Then would be eligible, but he’s already been added to the 40-man after he became Rule 5-eligible last season. (Players are eligible for the Rule 5 draft every year they meet the eligibility requirements yet aren’t added to a 40-man roster nor picked in the Draft, until they become minor-league free agents after six years of service.)

The third Top 30 prospect who is eligible is RHP Sam Carlson, who just completed his first year as a pro after undergoing TJ surgery early in his career. More on him in a later section.

As for upper-level pitchers, there are some possible but unlikely candidates in Tacoma. RHP Penn Murfee had success at the AFL in 2019 and then with Team USA and was generating some buzz before the shutdown; his command at Tacoma took a step back, which is tough for a softer-tosser, but a team with lousy pitching sold on his 2019 could roll the dice on him. Ian McKinney is Penn Murfee, but left-handed, and with slightly worse command. Both could be solid depth options for other teams but would be tough to carry on a 25-man for the full season.

RHP Devin Sweet also becomes eligible for the Rule 5 this year despite being signed in 2018; Sweet was older than 19 when he signed, so he is eligible after four instead of five seasons. Sweet, who was recently transitioned to the bullpen, is currently pitching in the AFL, which is an absolute nightmare for pitchers this year, although Sweet is holding his own with a 3.38 ERA over five appearances, with seven strikeouts in his 5.1 innings pitched. Like Kerr, Sweet is a free-agent signing who doesn’t have much of a prospect profile other than his results on the field, and his first taste of the high minors this past season had some bumps and bruises. I don’t think the Mariners add him, and I’m not particularly concerned about him getting nabbed by another team, although if he does, good for him.

had even a couple more months of pitching under his belt, I’d be concerned about RHP Sam Carlson getting snatched up. Or maybe if he’d blown away batters in Modesto with high-octane stuff and posted huge strikeout numbers, I’d be more worried about teams sniffing around the 2017 second-rounder. Instead, Carlson had a successful but relatively quiet season in his professional debut, and you know what, that’s fine. Nothing to see here, other teams, move along.

Roenis Elías....a fav player of mine just ..cuz
The 2019 World Series Champion Elias comes back to Seattle for his third stint with the Mariners, hopefully with that gorgeous curveball in tow. Elias sat out 2020 so ideally his arm is nice and fresh, even as the 32-year-old is a familiar face both to Seattle fans and the league as a whole.

if he is ready in time the mariners...may not need...one more LHP...or by the time some guys bomb out...or the deadline....

Potential Landing Spots for Kris Bryant

By: Braden Herb | January 3, 2022
One of the most intriguing free agents still on the market is Kris Bryant. Bryant is a former Rookie of the Year, MVP, four-time All-Star, and World Series Champion as a member of the Chicago Cubs. He has a career .880 OPS. On top of what he has done offensively, he is one of the most versatile players in baseball. He has played over 100 innings at five different positions in his career, primarily at third-base, where he has logged over 5,500 innings. However, he has also played over 1,700 innings in the outfield in his career, and he is coming off a season where he played in the outfield more than he played at third. He was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 2021 and helped them clinch the NL West. With his versatility, the potential landing spots for Bryant range far and wide.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are an interesting option for a couple reasons. First, outside of the reigning MVP Bryce Harper, the Phillies outfield options are very limited. Adam Haseley, Mickey Moniak, and Luke Williams are all nice, young options, but they have very little experience in the show. There are some question marks around the trio in that regard. Bryant can be a primary outfielder for the team and fill in at third or first when necessary. The other reason why this is an interesting option is Bryant’s relationship with Harper. The pair grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada where they played together as teenagers and have had a friendship ever since. Having a friend like Harper with him would help alleviate some of the pressures of playing in Philadelphia.

Seattle Mariners

There is a strong core of young players that the Seattle Mariners have acquired and developed. To go along with the young core, Mitch Haniger had a strong year, and is returning and the recently acquired Adam Frazier will inject some contact ability into a strikeout-laden team. The Mariners were one of the surprise teams of the 2021 season, just barely missing out on the postseason. They won 90 games despite having a -51 run differential. Manager Scott Servais attributed his team’s success to their “fun differential.” Well, the addition of Bryant would help the team’s run differential, which could help them reach the postseason for the first time in 20 years.

San Diego Padres

Early in the 2021 season, the San Diego Padres looked like a lock for the postseason, but a late season collapse ended those hopes. The Padres don’t need any infield help, but there is a big hole in left field. Jurickson Profar is currently their best option in left, but his .649 OPS in 2021 left a lot to be desired. Profar is a quality bench-bat and utility guy, however he has not proven to be an everyday guy. Bryant at his best is an MVP-caliber player, but has been at least really good in every season outside of 2020. San Diego regressed offensively in 2021, which contributed to their collapse. Bryant would help them fill one of their holes and avoid another collapse in 2022.

Few free agents are as intriguing as Bryant in regards to what he has done in is career, and where he could go. Because he can play numerous positions well, there are so many landing spots for Bryant. These are just a few places he could go, but the list is much longer due to his versatility. Bryant is a really good player as it is and he has the potential to be a top-10 guy.

Potential Landing Spots for Michael Conforto

no<NO,NO,BRANDEN.....over...here...to the mariners...lol

By: Braden Herb | December 20, 2021

Even though guys like Starling Marte, Avisail Garcia, and Mark Canha were signed before MLB’s lockout, there are still plenty of strong outfield options available. When the lockout is lifted, Michael Conforto will be one of the outfielders who garners the most attention. The lefty-hitting Conforto will have plenty of potential landing spots. Age is on his side as he will be 29 before Opening Day. However, injuries and inconsistencies have made Conforto one of the harder free agents to figure out.

Conforto followed up what was arguably his best season in 2020 with arguably his worst season in 2021. He had a slashline of .322/.412/.515 in the shortened 2020 season. His .232/.344/.384 slashline in 2021 was a far cry from the season before. Conforto has always had sizable variations in batting average between seasons. His career batting average is .255. However, until 2021, he consistently hit for power. His career slugging percentage is a quality .468. One thing that he continued in 2021 was his stellar eye at the plate. His walk rate through seven seasons is 12.1%, which is well above average. A return to the New York Mets is highly unlikely after the team signed the aforementioned Marte and Canha. However, Conforto has a pretty good floor and he can be a great fit on a few teams.

Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins have already signed a corner outfielder, the aforementioned Garcia. However, their outfield still has room to improve. As a team, the Marlins were bottom five in the NL in nearly every offensive statistic. They have plenty of young options such as Jesus Sanchez, Monte Harrison, and Bryan De La Cruz. If they want another veteran though, Conforto could man left field while one of their young prospects plays center. If a universal DH is added in the next CBA, Miami can still get plenty of at-bats for a guy like Sanchez, who had 14 homers in 64 games in 2021.

Milwaukee Brewers

On paper, the Milwaukee Brewers have a really good outfield: Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain, and the recently acquired Hunter Renfroe. However, Cain has dealt with a number of injuries over the past few seasons and was limited to 78 games in 2021. Yelich has dealt with back issues over the past couple seasons and is coming off a year where he hit .248 with nine home runs. A universal DH would immediately give a spot for Conforto and the Brewers’ current outfielders to play every day in some capacity. If the universal DH is not added in the CBA, a rotation of sorts could be used to keep them healthy and give everyone plenty of playing time.

Detroit Tigers

One of the up and coming, young teams who could be looking for a veteran outfielder is the Detroit Tigers. They have already made a couple splashes by signing Eduardo Rodriguez and Javier Baez. They could potentially make one more splash by signing Conforto to boost their outfield. Detroit currently has a veteran patrolling their outfield in Robbie Grossman, but outside of him there are some question marks. Akil Baddoo struggled in the middle of the 2021 season, but made some adjustments and finished strong. Victor Reyes has talent, but his sub .300 OBP and sub .400 slugging in over 300 career games leave a lot to be desired. Derek Hill and Daz Cameron are also talented young players, but they have very little Major League experience. Signing Conforto could help the Tigers let the rest of the AL Central know that their rebuild is just about over.

Conforto is one of the better hitting outfielders on the market. A left handed hitter like Conforto will always have plenty of possible landing spots, especially one with the potential that he has. Conforto has shown signs of greatness in his career and if he can more consistently tap into that, he could be one of the steals of the offseason.

Best Fits for Trevor StoryBy:

Jeremy Breland | December 7, 2021...but jeremy.you..buddy.....big time 1/2 skipped the mariners....

and that is where he may fit best

Trevor Story is one of the marquee names still available on the free-agent market. The two-time all-star shortstop is 29 years old has played the entirety of his career with the Colorado Rockies. While 2021 was not his finest season, Story is one of the best shortstops in the game. Going back to 2018, Story has put up a .281/.348/.532 (.880 OPS and 118 OPS+) batting line to go with full-season averages of 34 home runs, 95 RBI, 27 stolen bases, and a 6.0 bWAR. Coors Field or not, Story has been one of the best players in the sport since 2018.

Trevor Story in 2021

In 2021, Trevor Story posted his lowest OPS (.801) since 2017. He hit his fewest number of home runs in a full season (24) since 2017 as well. Additionally, he posted his lowest AVG, OBP, and SLG since 2017. Despite this, Story still stole 20 bases. He still put up a 4.2 bWAR season. His exit velocity, hard-hit rate, barrel rate were all still in the 62nd percentile or better. With 9 DRS and 3.6 UZR, Story graded out as an above-average shortstop by FanGraphs’ measure. What does all this mean? It means Story is a well-rounded player who hits the ball hard and still provided tremendous value in 2021.

An interesting note about Story’s 2021 season is that he did miss some time due to an elbow injury. This injury impacted the way he throws the ball at shortstop, and probably had an impact on his offensive numbers as well. Whereas Story graded out well defensively by FanGraphs, he posted -7 OAA per Baseball Savant. There is no doubt the elbow injury alters his market in free agency.

Corey Seager received $325 million, Javier Báez received $140 million, and even Marcus Semien got $175 million. Semien is versatile and can play both middle infield spots at a high level, so can Baez. Seager is the best hitter of all the shortstops available this offseason. Unless Story wants a one-year deal to restore his value, I think he likely ends up with a deal of around $180 million. Let’s look at three teams that present the best fit for his services once the lockout concludes.

New York Yankees

Quite frankly, the New York Yankees are the best fit for Carlos Correa as well. However, if they do not want to spend $350 million, Trevor Story is the way to go. Story is a player whose overall value can exceed that of Correa’s in any given year. This is what makes this so interesting. Correa is the better defender and does not have any current injury issues. Historically, however, Story has been the less-injured player on the whole. For the Yankees, he would be the big shortstop that fans have been clamoring for. The story would be the team’s best shortstop since Derek Jeter. The Yankees have stated several times that improving shortstop is a priority and Story does just that. He simultaneously helps the team get more athletic and better defensively.

The only issue with the Yankees would be the strikeouts. Story has a career 27.6% K rate, which just about mirrors the strikeout rate of Gary Sanchez in 2021. The lineup does need to get more contact-oriented and Story does not necessarily do that. However, what he brings is a better quality of contact than most hitters on the team in 2021. Lastly, the Yankees’ top-two prospects are shortstops. If they prove to be legitimate major-league players, either Story or one of those prospects could slot over to third without much issue. The Yankees were not involved in the pre-lockout spending spree so it will be interesting to see what their first moves are once the lockout is over.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have one of the worst defenders in baseball right now. In 2021, Didi Gregorius posted -10 DRS and -18 OAA. Even if Story is a negative defender when it comes to outs above average, he cannot be worse than what the Phillies currently have. The team had one of the worst infield defenses in the league last year and signing Story would go a long way to shore up that problem. Whether it is moving Didi to second or third base, this is something that can easily be done to make space for an all-star player like Story.

The Phillies have a few long-term contracts right now so it is unknown if they will want to add another. However, with their market size and Dave Dombrowski as President of Baseball Operations, this move makes a whole lot of sense. The team has a long way to go before being a serious contender. Philadelphia ranked 14th in the league in stolen bases, 15th in home runs, and13th in runs scored last season. Adding Story would not only improve their defense but also make a signifcant offensive impact in multiple areas.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros reportedly offered Carlos Correa a five-year deal worth $160 million early in the offseason. That amounts to a $32 million average annual value. However, Correa is seeking a longer deal than that. Why not just offer Trevor Story that deal? Due to his age and some of the injury concerns, Story is not getting a 10-year deal. If the Astros can up the deal a little bit to six or seven years, it seems likely that Story would accept it. The Astros currently do not have a shortstop as it is all but likely that Correa is gone. Houston has had a very dynamic middle infield since 2015, and adding Story would just continue that stretch. Not to mention that if Story is healthy, his defense would contribute to one of the best defensive teams in the sport.

When comparing Story to Correa, both are great dynamic, all-around players. However, what Story brings to the table that Correa doesn’t is speed. Story steals bases and is a 25-25 threat every season. He was worth 6.4 baserunning runs (BsR) above average in 2021 while Correa was worth -0.6. In 2021, Story had an extra-base taken rate (XBT%) of 55% while Correa’s was at 42%. This further proves the point that Story can be more valuable than Correa in any given year of their upcoming contracts. For the Astros, specifically, for as great a team as they are, they do not have great baserunners. Adding Story would add another dimension to that lineup which they do not currently have.

Other Team Fits

While the Yankees, Phillies, and Astros present the best fits for Trevor Story, the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs make sense as well. Story is seen as a player who can be versatile and switch to second or third base, which broadens the scope of his potential suitors. Similar to Javy Baez, Story did not have his best year in 2021 but can be a major contributor to any team that signs him. Also, Story had an .843 OPS in the second half compared to .765 in the first, perhaps signaling better health as the season progressed. It will be interesting to see where Story ends up and what his contract ultimately looks like.

yeah mariners are mentioned...way down..here...cubs are re-building...everyone knows that..

man...the mariners..got old schooled......by jeremy...yeah..that is how..it used to happen..30- 40..years ago..drive a steam roller..right over seattle...yeah..just a speed bump...

hopefully with frazier...mariners can..bring strike outs down with story...why its called a team...

Correa has said he is open to playing 3rd.
Hmm, I guess I haven’t heard. Thought Boras said he was playing SS and right after is when Jerry said that.

Which Teams Are The Best Fits For Trevor Story?

By Anthony Franco | January 5, 2022 at 12:24pm CDT

Trevor Story is one of two star free agent shortstops remaining on the market. To some extent, he’s in a second tier of his own at this point. Carlos Correa is the clear prize of the class. He’s two years younger than Story with more upside on both sides of the ball, and there’ll be a fairly significant gap in each player’s respective contract reflecting that.
Yet Story should be in high demand in his own right. Only one team can land Correa, and many may not want to entertain an asking price that could approach or top the $325MM Corey Seager landed from the Rangers. Story’s the only other shortstop still on the market who’s likely to offer above-average production for the next few seasons.
Let’s take a look at some potential suitors and try to peg Story’s likeliest landing spot. A few clubs are such longshots they only warrant cursory mention. The Orioles, Pirates and D-Backs aren’t in the kind of competitive window that suggests they’d make this kind of splash. The A’s and Reds are far likelier to cut payroll than make a nine-figure investment. The Rays, Brewers and Royals don’t typically spend at this level and have an abundance of infielders anyways. The Rangers have already signed both Seager and Marcus Semien in the middle infield and have Josh Jung approaching at third base.
Which teams make more sense?
Clubs With Infield Opportunity And Known Interest
  • Mariners — Jon Heyman of the MLB Network indicated prior to the lockout that the Mariners had put an offer on the table to Story. Seattle’s known to be pursuing infielders, and while they could roll with a group of Ty France, Adam Frazier, J.P. Crawford and Abraham Toro, adding Story would be a nice boost on both sides of the ball. President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has been adamant about keeping Crawford at shortstop, but if Story’s amenable, he could slide to second base and push Frazier and/or Toro into roving utility roles.
  • Astros — The Astros are facing Correa’s potential departure and have Aledmys Díaz as their top in-house option at shortstop. Top prospect Jeremy Peña isn’t far off big league readiness, but Houston’s a win-now club without many vacancies on the roster. Aside from perhaps left-handed relief, shortstop is the only real question mark. Signing Story would reaffirm their position as one of the best teams in the sport, and Heyman reported they’ve shown some interest.
  • Red Sox — Heyman also reported the Red Sox had expressed interest with Story’s camp. Xander Bogaerts is a star, but he can opt out of his current contract after next season. Boston also has some uncertainty at second base, and either of Story or Bogaerts could slide to the other side of the diamond. As with Houston, this is a big-market team that wasn’t far from a championship last year.
Solid Speculative Fits
  • Angels — The Angels in-house shortstop options (Tyler Wade, Luis Rengifo, Jack Mayfield and Andrew Velazquez) aren’t enough for a hopeful contender. Los Angeles already has a few long-term investments for position players on the books, and they may still want to add another arm or two on the pitching staff. Locking in some certainty in the middle infield is a necessity, though, and Story fits the bill.
  • Blue Jays — The Jays have Bo Bichette at shortstop, but they’re facing some questions at both second and third base. They signed Semien to move off shortstop last winter; might they consider a similar tack with Story? There seems to be some payroll flexibility with which to work, as Toronto made a run at Seager before he landed in Texas.
  • Cardinals — The Cardinals could try to upgrade over the Paul DeJong/Edmundo Sosa pairing at shortstop. That’s particularly true if DeJong ends up traded. To this point in the winter, though, there hasn’t been much indication that’s a priority for St. Louis. The Cardinals seem more interested in upgrading the bullpen and perhaps adding to the DH mix.
  • Cubs — The Cubs have been tied to Correa for much of the winter. They’re reportedly loath to commit to a decade-long deal, and Story could make sense as a fallback. The Cubs have taken a step back recently, and perhaps they view Correa

having 2 short stops is better than a short stop and a 2B....cuz if one goes down..you still have the other guy...
short stops are ussually your best defence guys...story....is that.....

if the mariners ...want to make a try..for the series....they need story...and maybe...a pitcher..but that is yet to be seen..

could they use conforto...i think so.......
