Dipoto sounded as if he did reach out last year and Haniger shut him down.

I think trading him is the best thing for the team. You can get some prospects back or a starter and replace him with a few free agent options. I am fine with that because it could be one step back but two steps forward which is the opposite for them.
In a trade situation I think I'd rather not bother landing more prospects unless Dipoto has some genius plan to then immediately flip those prospects for someone who can impact the team today and beyond.

I think it would hurt the team in 2022 if we traded Haniger and didn't somehow turn that into a player who can add as much value to the team in 2022 as Haniger does.

I will say that if the Mariners were to explore that route, they'd be selling him high right now as this was only his second injury-free season in his major league career. It would be a shame if we just let him walk in free agency and didn't get anything for him.

I will gladly pay any state tax currently out there on a $350M check. He is one Kyle Lewis injury away from being worth $3.50. These guys deserve what they can get, but look at Isaiah Thomas in the NBA. They predicted he lost $100M because of the injury.
Good point.

I suppose it's all relative. The additional income tax is really the only reason I could see him turning it down. Thinking out loud I wondered if maybe the news was leaked so that he could negotiate a better contract in free agency, but he's not a free agent until 2025. So who knows?

I don’t think this is Mitch’s last year. If it were IMO Jerry would’ve dealt him last year. I think he will resign and he will rotate between DH and RF. Though my opinion could change if he become vocal about playing in the field every day.
I actually think if Mitch is on the team next year will be more dependent on Kelenic and Julio's progression. Haniger will be 32 next year and if Kelenic and Julio show their potential in 2022, the Mariners may be reluctant to give Haniger the contract he'd get in free agency. The contract would pay Haniger past his prime and he's an injury prone outfielder whose defensive value has started to diminish.

I think a lot of it depends on what happens in 2022. I do think there is a strong possibility that come the end of 2022, what to do with Haniger will be the biggest question of our offseason.

From everything I had read previously the team had never approached him regarding an extension. If he duplicates what he did last year, I would be ok extending him a qualifying offer (although that system is likely changing??)

Haniger's future with the team still depends on lots of unknowns. Can Lewis stay healthy and play in the field? Can Kelenic take the next step? How far does Julio progress and factor in the next 12 months? Can either Fraley or Trammell prove they are more then just roster depth? Do they sign any other FAs that can play the OF (Suzuki/Conforto/etc.?)

I don't think it's necessarily an easy decision either way. To be fair to Haniger he has produced almost always when he has been healthy. He is also a very tough person to project what he would command on the open market since he's not young either.
Not sure about the qualifying offer or how that will change, no matter what if that's in place the Mariners would clearly exercise that because if they didn't, they'd get nothing for Haniger. He would likely reject it and go to free agency.

Regarding your unknowns, here are my thoughts:

Can Lewis stay healthy and play in the field? Stay healthy, perhaps. Play in the field? Probably not if you want to keep him healthy.
Can Kelenic take the next step? I think we all hope so. If he doesn't I think that'll lead the team to have no option but to extend Haniger.
How far does Julio progress in factor in the next 12 months? This is also a crucial factor.
Can either Fraley or Trammell prove they are more than just roster depth? As much as I used to love Fraley, I don't think his walk rate is sustainable and that's the only thing that made him valuable in 2021. If the Mariners were to make a trade with Oakland, Fraley is probably a guy that Billy Beane would love. Trammell I'm already ready to write off.
Do they sign any other FAs that can play the OF? That's another big one. If the Mariners land Suzuki, I'd find it very unlikely Haniger is back in 2023 unless Suzuki looks like a bust.

I agree it's not an easy decision, which is what makes it fun to discuss. All of these variables you mentioned really play into the decision. Haniger does produce when healthy, and to his credit has an insane work ethic to be able to come back as strong as he did in 2021, but the injury history and age will linger over him. For all we know he could have a injury plagued 2022 and this discussion in 10 months will be if we should bring Haniger back on a prove-it deal.

It could be a combination, but I think Soto could easily get $100 mil more then that. He's arguably a top 5 bat and only 23. I can't blame him for not wanting to get screwed like Acuna did
That is a pretty lofty projection.

I agree that he is a top 5 bat, maybe arguably the best hitter in baseball but that's his only asset. All of the other guys who have signed these mega deals offer more than just a bat. I actually think that deal is very fair, perhaps his gripe is the amount per year. Who knows
