Why trade back, if guy you want is there? If you trade back a few spots, someone can jump you and get your guy. Stay put.
Depends on the situation. For me, if Henderson is there, I'm not trading back for anything. But what if he just came off the board and there were 5-6 prospects left that you had pretty much the same grade on. You could trade back up to 4 spots, still get a guy with the same grade you would have plus maybe add a 3rd rounder to boot

Cj Henderson at 17 would be good value. He is a better prospect than Claiborne was. I would be surprised if he is there. If not there I take chaisson or kinlaw.

Would prefer no trade downs
One could argue that the Frederick trade worked out, but let's be honest and say Terrance William's was not worth the gamble to trade down. We need starters and can find depth other ways.

I don't know what position, but I just hope we can find at least two guys that can contribute right away.

DT and WR are deep, to the point we can get contributors there into the 3rd round. My guess is we shoot for a DB with first pick, then OL, back to defense with a DT then pick WR in the 4th. I imagine we will see us draft a new QB at some point. How high should indicate what their real feeling is toward Dak.

I guess it feels this way every year but I really wish we were a couple picks higher. I think picking 15 would be a great spot for us. Henderson is the guy I really like both from a talent and position perspective so to me he is the perfect fit and I feel like both teams right in front of us would be looking CB. Personally I don't think Henderson is going to be there at 15 either, but jumping those two teams would really help. Regardless I think at 15 your are guaranteed one of the top 3 WRs and I think all 3 are really good prospects and great value where we pick and would contribute day 1 and for years to come. I love Kinlaw also but feel like he will be gone too. I'm not as sold on some of the other DBs or Chaisson at #17 as most seem to be but I do think CB may be better value with our 2nd round pick. I am also wondering why Dallas seems to be interviewing a bunch of LBs. Is it possible Vander Esch's injury is more severe than being assumed?

This has been on my mind as well. I haven't heard anything about surgery being able to fix what is wrong with LVE. So I hope its not stenosis - but seems to me we would have heard that by now. Otherwise it seems to me that maybe he had a neck fracture or fractures and they didn't want him exposed to any hits until 2020 season.
Now, assuming he will be good to go, I view them looking at LBs as part of what DCMN wants at his disposal. I think he wanted to retain Quinn which would have provided that edge rusher he likes to deploy. Since that didn't happen, the fallback is to find one in the draft. I don't think there is a requisite body type/size that needs to fit, just a certain skill. I think that is where the LSU rusher fits. I just have a hard time spending a 1st on one, but that is the FO's call.

Cowboys should have put in backups against the Skins and called it a season. That victory cost us draft positioning and a likely chance of getting an elite prospect.

I am pretty high on Gifford as a player. Can he stay on the field is the question. He was impressive the little I saw of him. Very impressive for an undrafted player. I say just draft DB or DL.. DB is a huge need. We need to stock up on DBs with all those expiring contracts coming up after this season. This is the draft to stock up on secondary players.

The Cowboys should trade down for more draft picks.

It goes back to who we have currently that we can count on. Not Aldon, not Gregory, Lawrence hasn't shown anything yet. We don't have that guy yet. Nolan is aggressive, not passive in scheme. He won't rely on coverage sacks - and frankly - we don't have that personel. We will get a pass rusher, but he likely will be a specialist year 1. The best 2 I see are Chaisson and Baun. They both warrant a first. Chaisson at our pick, Baun maybe a late 1. Depending on who else is there, our play at 17 might be:
1. Take Chaisson.
2. Take CJ Henderson.
3. Move back and add picks until we get where Baun should go.

If we want Baun and instead of picking him, we trade back because we assume teams will follow mocks and not take him until the end of the first/early second then we deserve to lose him. If you like the player enough you take him. If you try to get too cute you screw yourself. Our mid to late round picks have been more miss than hit outside of Dak. Take the player you want unless you don't really like him more than others or you move down less spots than you have similarly ranked players.

1st off, no, you don't take a guy like Baun that early. There are plenty of better players than to reach at 17 for him. He is special in one way and average at a few others and he doesn't play a premium position which naturally lowers his draft capital. Just because we may like his fit best on our team, it would be dumb to take him if he's your 28th best player on your board. That's like trading down without getting any compensation. Sure you got your guy, but damn. Taking Baun at 17 would be akin to taking Taco in the first all over again (blind drafting a need position or skill). We need a few other draftees to help this year, which is why trading back and gaining another pick would work better if they miss on Chaisson.

2nd, it's not a Baun or bust move. I just added his name because he's probably second best in regards to knifing into backfields (if that is what the FO deems they need). We likely have similar players in a handful of spots in the next 2 rounds. I'd rather we did wait and take a guy later that can do about the same role rather than to spend our 1st. But I don't know how the FO views our need or what was promised DCMN.

3rd. If we move back, I assume we missed out on both Chaisson and CJ Henderson. We need a corner and there are 3 other CBs that are fairly comparable without the same ball skills (plus there is Baun). It'll help to move back and gain pick(s) to shore up another position later. I don't think any of the next corners are rated up in the top 20, so it would be sunk cost to hold steady at 17 and pick one of those there too. If you don't move back and our targets are gone, there is also a gaping hole on the OL without Fred.

With the likelihood of 4 QBs (2 semi-reaches) going before us, that should give us a good shot at a top defender like Chaisson or CJH. I really think those 2 are top 15 picks, but add in the QBs that can get pushed up the board and we may have one fall in our lap - likely CJH. I don't see us taking a WR there at 17, but Jerry likes to sell seats and merchandise so there's always a possibility.

There is some real good talent in this draft. There is no reason we should not get 2 starters out of this. Plus with Garrett gone I see the offense getting better. Without any real additions from this draft. We got cobbs replacement already on the roster and that guy is Pollard. We got an upgrade over Witten in Jarwin and he can also help in the slot as well. The secondary continues to be a major weakness.Cowboys draft too many corners that rarely picked the ball off in college Byron Jones and Awuzie rarely picked the ball off in college. CJ Henderson I am not totally sure about. He has that potential, but I see him as not a sure thing either. Some of those picks he got were just because the QB sucked. He is a nice player though. Give me a guy like gladney if we were to trade down a little. Gladney has the ball skills. Antoine Winfield I am going to say is a playmaker with the desired ball skills. Give me those two and we will start getting turnovers

The center position is a problem. We got Looney who IMO should be a backup. Looney simply never was able to create running lanes and should remain a backup. Mcgovern I like but I did not like the fact he missed all last season. May require a pick in this draft.

What I am saying is whomever you like at 17 (you mentioned Baun so i used him) if you trade back thinking you will definitely still get him that is not wise. I'm not saying that about a guy we have ranked our 28th player.

And Baun might just be a better day 1 pass rusher than Chaisson but I don't really want either at 17 UNLESS I hear the scouts love whichever they pick. Of course there is a chance the team interviewed Baun because they think maybe they get him with their second pick or that they would trade up in the 2nd for him for all we know. It seems like every year around 17ish (give or take a few) the Cowboys only have one or maybe two guys left with a first round grade. The idea a guy is a good pick at 23 but not worth it at 17 has always perplexed me. If you want a guy you take him unless you rank him similarly to 5 other guys and only trade back 4 spots. If we add a 4th or 5th rounder it could be a Dak, but more likely it will be a guy we overhype, predict to be a great pick and who ends up disappearing on the depth chart and eventually moving on. Great players win games and we need a play maker on D. Let's try to find one or two :suds:

I get your points. But looking at this quote...
I'm sure sometime in your life you've bought a nice vehicle. Did you pay sticker or did you work the salesperson down to get other things thrown in?
It's a damn nice vehicle either way, but it's nicer knowing you took every advantage you felt you had, even if all you got extra was a tint job.

In this draft, I'd be shocked to hear if we have fewer than 20 first round grades. Maybe if we removed a few positions from being listed like RBs that under no circumstance we take one in the first round. The web site I look at currently has 28 A+, from which I remove 4 I don’t like better than the next guy. And there may instances that the next guy I like should also be an A+.

So sitting at 17 we are in good shape to have a good selection. Then you have the QBs or DEs that aren't A+ that get picked high because of the position premium, push more A+ down to us. In any case we should do well to find what we need this year AND not reach.

But you can always drive to another dealer and get the exact same car or haggle knowing you are trying for the best deal but that you are buying even if he says no. Once you trade that pick you don't know if you get your player ("car") or not and the NFL draft NEVER goes like all of these group think mocks that basically all show the same thing. It only takes one NFL GM to think a guy that you didn't think anyone else liked was worth picking at #19 to lose your guy if you trade down a few spots.

I agree. if we are talking one particular guy we want. if we have 4 or 5 guys we legit like graded the same & we move back 7 or 8 spots. I am cool with that kind of gamble.

Otherwise I am always leary of getting to cute, if the guy we are targeting is there at our pick.
