More likely he knew what the prices would be and is just using that as a crutch in case he doesn't land anyone
agree. JD never planned on doing much so now he has the excuse for it. the amounts being given are pretty damn close to the early projections so what was he expecting? i am now prepared for a nothing performance in 2018 and the fire sale prior to the trade deadline.

Do you guys expect the Rangers to make an all out effort for Bryce Harper a year from now?

Dec. 15: USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that the Nationals say the conversations about Harper were casual, and they fully expect Harper to test free agency next winter. The Nats still hope to re-sign Harper, he adds, but they seemingly don’t expect to be able to do so without him first exploring the open market.
no i think the Rangers will do little or nothing in regards to him

I don't think there will be a fire sale at the deadline unless we are close to 10 games behind the second wildcard and I don't think we will be. If they were going to do that they would have traded more than Darvish and Lucroy 5 months ago. They don't want to go all out and they don't want to rebuild. They want to straddle the fence.

i think that straddle the fence has been their plan for the last few years but i think 2018 is the end of that thinking. they have been content to load up on tier 3 and 4 players for those years but that thinking failed which is why they unload Darvish this last season. 2018 will see us unload anyone of value which includes Hamels, Beltre, Andrus etc between now and the trade deadline. the proof will be when we sign some tier 3 or 4 pitcher to fill that last starter position.

so basically our bullpen, catching, outfield and infield are set and all we need is one starter to fill our 40. i think we are looking at someone familar to fill that spot. i see them signing 1 from this list: Cashner, Gonzalez, D. Holland, N. Martinez, T. Ross, H. Wakui or C. Young to fill out the rotation. and then JD will hold a press conference extolling the fact that he and the ownership have put together a good team for 2018.

scratch the Padres from a possible Profar trade target. Padres have traded with the Phillies for Galvis

I just don't see the Rangers competing for either wildcard spot. With the moves they have made they will be competing for 4th place in the west.

...in 2018. JD is trying to position the team for another window of long-term, sustained success.

i don't see the Rangers competing for anything but a high draft choice in the 2019 and a whole lot of empty seats in the second half of 2018. between now and the opening of the new park parking will not be a problem because the product on the field won't encourage the fans to come out

It's all about the money. You can not acquire all the needs we want and the players we want in the same year. If the money was not short it could happen but it is not the case. The Choo contract has to be met as well as cost of #1 2 3 pitchers not achievable imo not to mention position players.

Two years away before being in contention.

if i were working to rebuild a team over a 2 or 3 year period to return the team to the competitive level i would be making moves to prepare that return. no we have too many holes to make the team a competitive factor in 2018 but that doesn't mean you don't add anything and sit on your hands. we have to add a piece or 2 now, a piece or 2 in 2019 and a piece or 2 in 2020 while incorporating those pieces that become ready in our minor league system. instead apparently we are in a mindset that we wait until those pieces in the minors are ready and then fill in the FA needs then.

you disagree?
yes i do. when we were competitive we didn't sit and wait for our minor league prospects to develop, we built a team where we assimilated them into a competitive team and allowed them to reach their potential with vets supporting them. apparently now we are abandoning that thinking and going back to the old way

I knew all along that we wouldn't fill all the needs this offseason, but it is a bit discouraging that of the 6 biggest needs that I thought we had none of them have been filled to this point.
