I was excited to see this, I have been locked in to getting a Tacoma, but this seems like it could be competitive with that one. Not offering a 6 cylinder is a bizarre choice, but the 2.3 eb is what I would want anyway so this feels right up my alley.

Why Tacoma? I mean...if you're open to get any mid-sizer, the Canyon as of right now is the best bet. Yeah the Taco has the marketplace and cache but that's more because pretty much everyone left the segment - kudos to Toyo for sticking it out I guess. Personally, I'd get the Tacoma because I refuse to buy GM.

I 'like' what I see from this Ranger, but I think Ford is only dipping their toes in the water to see the responses to this truck. It just isn't the same ole $9000 Ranger that most people remember, and it looks like they are purposely limiting this vehicle because they don't want to overlap the F150 nor are they fully committed to the segment.

My first Ranger.
A great truck. Ran forever.

They were awesome trucks....cost fuck all to buy, took an asskicking like a man, and outlived most everything else on the road. I do somewhat regret picking up a 2010 Escape a bit when I had the chance to get a Ranger, but given that it was the same platform....it still runs like the day I bought it.

I honestly liked the Ridgleine the most, but it was more than I wanted to spend.

I looked at the Canyon and Colorado, but the Tacoma looked the best to me, and seemed to be a better fit for my needs.

Tacoma's are popular here in Alaska but the one thing that rankles me about Toyota is they refuse to get onboard with Apple Carplay / Android Auto.

The new Tacoma works with Apple I believe, but not android. I dont have an Apple so that was something I was not a huge fan of as well.

Somewhat odd....the Ridgeline is the most highway-purpose midsizer whereas at this point, the Taco is most off-road worthy in the same segment. No matter what...good luck in your purchase.

I'm not big on the Raptors ... at least for my use. I don't do much off roading. I was hoping for more of a utility truck in the new Ranger ... but it's another urbanite vehicle.
I'm not into the F-150 Raptor, way to big and I don't desert race.

But a Ranger Raptor would be great for me if it has actual off road chops.
Mud, deep snow, washed out two tracks...deep in the mountains kind of thing.

Raptors are cool and all, but there is zero need to own. They put you in the same insurance bracket as a high-performance sports car, have crap for low end torque and get worse gas mileage than a Hummer

Zero need for YOU to own.

Yeah, I know they are opposite ends, but during test drives I liked the feel of the Tacoma a lot.

If I were to step down from my half ton pickup I’d either drive a 4 runner or Tacoma. No question.

I could even go with a new Ford Ranchero.
If you don't carry/tow heavy loads.
A light duty truck that didn't harm the f150 sales.

Was it a six cylinder?

Two brothers in laws had the 2.3L and both motors blew up under 50,000mi. It didn't surprise me none as I had a 79 Mustang that did the same at just over 40,000mi and Ford said it was a disposable engine. I never bought another Ford product after that.

No. Mine had the 4 cyl. I remember it as a 2.0, but it could have been 2.3
Ran great, never 1 problem. Bought it with 35,000 on it and drove it to 110,000.
Then went thru 3 different kids, all of them had it as a first car.
Parked it at 200,000 because I ran out of kids and it sat 5 years.
Started it up one day and ran just fine, and then I sold it.
