for one thing, ESPN2 can't have "Australian Open" listed on my guide and then show me come chicks playing college basketball. I wanted to watch some of the Venus match. I got to try out my new Android box and see if I could find it streaming, but the quality sucked and it kept cutting out, so fuck it. She won in 2 sets, moving on.

Second, Feds rolled to that W last night. That is impressive for the old man.

Well you wouldn't have seen the Venus match anyway. It was the first match of the day so basically by the time ESPN2 coverage was scheduled to start it was already in the 2nd set tiebreaker. You don't have tennis channel? They usually cover the first 2 hours (7 PM-9 PM EST) so basically all of the Venus match was on TC

Am I the only one who find it weird that instead of having 2 single night matches on RLA, they opt to have 3 in the day with the 2nd match on RLA in the night being a doubles match?

haha, for years, ESPN's coverage of the men's final was late because of men's college basketball. as in they'd show 20 minutes of OT of the bball game, and then join the aussie open men's final at 2-2 in the first set.

watchespn/espn3 makes it so you can see almost every match on every show court live. the quality of the stream is always fantastic. if it's not, it's usually because you're using mobile data and/or bad wireless. you just sign in with your cable provider.

in the future, try using watchESPN/ESPN3. they show coverage of tons of matches every day starting at 7 EST...or watch tennis channel if you have it. that's how i watched the venus match.

Did college basketball really overlap for the Men's Final? Because the Men's Final starts at 12:30AM PST / 3:30 AM EST.

Time to re-negotiate with your provider for the sports package which includes Tennis Channel. ;)

I'm assuming he is talking about when the men's final used to be played around 930 PM EST before they started playing night matches

Ok, now I'm remembering a little bit. I think 2004-2007 were at that time. Not sure about 2008. I think by 2009 it was 7 or 7:30pm Australian.

Can you guys find out, or remember, what year it from from 12pm Australian to 7/7:30?

It was happening back in 98-01 when I was watching tennis in the Marine Corps. Not sure when they changed it to a night match in Australia.

Okay, so it looks to me like maybe 04 was the last day final.

Correct. First night Aussie finals on the men's side took place in 2005. First primetime finals for the women was in 2009.

I remember the 2009 AO was on the same day as the SuperBowl, and that one was a night match, so I was tired in the morning of the SuperBowl because of the 5 set Men's AO match.

I remember working on my senior project with my group when the 2004 Men's Final was on, so that one had to be during normal PST evening hours, because the others wouldn't have been over at 12am.

I also remember I missed the 2003 Men's Final, because of a sudden group meeting. It was sudden enough that I didn't even have time to set the VCR. But that again was a normal evening PST match.

So sometime between 2005-2009 they moved it to late night.

I think in 2005, it was still tape delayed on NBC. I think the Women's Match was tape delayed. I seem to think that one was in the evening.

It would kind of make sense they moved it to a night match in 2008, because that's the year they changed surfaces at the AO. But maybe they moved it to a night match in 2009.

Oh, I didn't realize they didn't move both the mens and womens to night during the same year.

What year was the Australian Open moved to ESPN full time, and no longer tape delayed on NBC? 2005? 2006?

I took CoCo Vandeweghe (+400) to win the Women's Australian Open outright about ten minutes ago!
