it isn't the percentage of which were which, but the quality of player and where they came from. And trades are easier to make when you can eat contracts on missed signings and/or use signings to fill holes of what you traded away. It is big.

Totally true, but Bernie, Jeter and Posada were intrusmental in that dynasty and making the right deal for Tino instead of Pettite and Rivera we got Davis and Hitchcock. They can eat money but I also think it's huge developing players. IMO it's the same reason the Mariners fell so hard from 2002 when it was mostly free agents and when the team became old in August of 2002 they didn't have any players to replenish and went for Beltran and Sexson and just continued that process. Ichiro didn't exactly help either when they had guys like Choo and Jones though.
