Interesting perspective, but keep in mind they also added Dunleavy (who's been around 40% from three in each of the last six seasons), plus already have eight figure committed to Shumpert...

Do they really have an overwhelming need for Smith that he's worth $15 million a year?

Considering they're coming off a championship, I think it's highly important. Their championship window is now and if their best chance to repeat would be by bringing back a guy as Wiggy said who hit 200+ 3 pointers for them last year.

Dunleavy was a great find for them off the bench, but they also lost Delly who shot great from 3 last year. So in terms of shooting Dunleavy and Delly cancel each other out.

I would say no. The reason being is because while he did have a good shooting season last year, he's still far too inconsistent. I say try to get it done for less than $15 mil a year.

They can negotiate using the fact that they've won & the only other team projected to win if they don't is GS which currently has no need or interest in a J.R. Smith. So if he wants to get paid & not have a chance to really compete for another title he can leave. If he wants to have another run at a title he signs for less. But, that's just what I would do. I'm sure Gilbert will fold like a lawn chair sooner rather than later.

Pitching was the only position you played? Any scholarship offers from colleges?
yah i was not a good hitter at all- i got a couple college letters but after my junior summer i had surgery and that was that....had a second surgery a few months later to tighten things up and get rid of some scar tissue....still is not nearly 100% but its not bad.

Extremely. Which is why the Cavs will likely pony up and pay the man his money. All JR needs is one offer to go elsewhere and if the money is right, he should consider it. As I said before, JR has cost himself a lot of money in the past and should be getting paid right now.
the Nets and Sixers are the teams he is discussing terms with other than the Cavs...

if he wants to make every last cent then he is gone- thats always been the case. If he is willing to take a deal similar to Crawford in LAC- then he will be back

if he wants like 4 years 60 than i doubt he is back

all in all i would predict he will be back though and sign at something like 3 years 42.

It's just not his actual production that is there, it's the threat of it. JR Smith is a notoriously streaky shooter. Just because he's 0-5 to start off a game, doesn't mean you can leave him open.

Even the threat of JR on the court, creates spacing. If you don't have a threat out there, you have an additional defender to hedge in the middle.

That's too bad. I think MLB might be the hardest professional sport to get drafted in.

I agree, but I'm sure if all they value is the "threat" there are guys out there that will take less for the job. Just sayin....

Threat adds to value. They wouldn't be paying him because he's a threat. It's in addition to him hitting 200+ 3's for them at a 40% clip.

Which leads us back to my point about him being inconsistent.

All I'm saying is IMO he's not worth that much when I weigh what he's done against him being able to do it again.

I might offer 3/43 with a player option for the third year. If he don't take it - Fuck him, and go out and sign Cole.

I agree.

If I were the Cavs......I'd let Smith walk and sign somebody else.

They added Dunleavy to strengthen the bench and he can hit the 3. Shump could start and he actually helps provide better defense, not to mention he can step out and hit the 3 as well.

Overall, Smith has not been a valuable asset for NBA teams over the course of his career. He took a ton of bad shots, made poor decisions with the ball, was a mediocre defender and a locker room issue.

All of those things changed this season. Could he regress? Sure, it is possible, but I think he has genuinely matured. If he stays with Cleveland, he will continue to be the same guy. In Philly or Brooklyn, he probably tries to do way too much again.

What does not get noticed with Smith is his defense. In addition to the floor spacing he provides, he has turned into a good defender. Unless you are replacing him with Klay Thompson, Khris Middleton, or Kawhi Leonard (all very impossible) the Cavs get a lot worse if they lose Smith.

3-4 years from now if half those guys are still on the team it would be highly highly surprising considering how the NBA works whether via trades, injuries, performance, salary, playing time, etc. etc.

think of all the teams that have tanked and gone through rebuilds and had multiple high picks- all of them NEVER EVER EVEEEEEEEEEEEEEER work out. Even guys taken in the top 5- let alone late first or 2nd rounders.

if out of those 6 guys you get 1 star, 1 or 2 really good players and 1 or 2 rotation guys that would be exceedingly fortunate.

It seems likely that at least 3 or 4 of those players end up starting quality players at minimum (Russell, Ingram, Randle, Zubac). Clarkson may end up that 3rd guard and 6th man type, with Nance being a hardworking backup as well. So, I suppose they would look for a big time SG, but they only good SGs available in 2017 are restricted. Unless they choose to go the Westbrook route (and ultimately trade at least Russell and maybe Randle), I'm not sure what stars you expect them to chase.
