The Mariners announced today that Angels special assistant Tim Bogar has been hired as the bench coach to serve under newly minted manager Scott Servais (as Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times reported would happen last week). Seattle also announced that Mel Stottlemyre Jr. has been named the club’s new pitching coach. Edgar Martinez will return as the team’s hitting coach, and Chris Woodward will once again handle first base coach duties in Seattle. That leaves openings at third base coach and bullpen coach, and Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune tweets that two names under consideration are Padres bench coach Dave Roberts and former big league catcher Dan Wilson, who has been Seattle’s minor league catching coordinator for the past three seasons.

A bit more from the AL West…

  • Dutton also tweets that the Mariners have spoken to Raul Ibanez about either a front office role or a position on the coaching staff. Ibanez, of course, played for the Mariners from 1996-2000 and then again from 2004-08 before returning for one final stint in 2013. He’s also familiar with GM Jerry Dipoto, though, as Dipoto signed Ibanez to a low-risk one-year deal for the 2014 season. That move didn’t work out, however, as Ibanez was unable to recreate the production he showed in his final season with the Mariners when he blasted 29 homers as a 41-year-old.

Saw that but wasn't sure what to make of it. I know he played for Dipoto so I guess there is nothing wrong with bringing in your own guys...to a point.

He's nearly 30, and has barely 100 games, so this will be his last chance to be a big league player, I'm thinking. Our OF is in such dire straights, I think bringing in a low risk/medium reward buy like Robertson is pretty okay. Totally agree with you about "to a point" as well.

I am all for it. Nothing to lose but maybe strike gold...or at least strike silver.

Could M's be winning bid? A few teams have been eliminated, but not M's. A Japanese 1B sounds like a possibilty for both reasons (1B and Japanese).

SI picks 3 as Best Fit for m's'

1- Upton
2- Clippard
3- Anderson

I haven't been a fan of Upton, and have never really understood the idea that he's an ideal fit here in Seattle. No problems with the other 2.

Plus Upton was a Jack fantasy so why link him to Dipoto? Clippard I could see, but is Anderson worth losing our 1st round pick for when there are so many better options that don't cost us our pick? Leake being one of those pitchers.

They need a 1bman, for sure. It would be nice to think that the M's are looking to retool and win at the same time. He is Korean though....

Oh, he has a qualifying offer? Then no, I wouldn't give up the pick for him, especially since I think our rotation isn't in that bad of shape - young yes, but it isn't the biggest need right now.

Also just looked at what the fangraphs say it will cost to bring Anderson here - $11 million per....not sure I would pay him that even if there wasn't a draft pick attached (especially since I don't know what DiPoto will have in way of budget.) Also, would we be interested in bring Antonio Bastardo in?

So much for my theory...lol. He is still a 1B right? :)

I wouldn't mind seeing Aoki being signed. No QA so no loss of pick and he fits our new style.

I think it made a little bit of sense pre Nelson Cruz. But it seems counter productive now especially having a qualifying offer tied to him.
