Adding talent is adding talent. You always have your needs, but sometimes you just have to settle for an upgrade at a lesser need position. Who wouldn't want Price as an upgrade over Elias or 5th spot?

Plus you can then turn Price into a package of other prospects or another impact bat for the 2015 season. While there are those who cite our inability to scout those kinds of kids, we also don't have a great track record of building our own, so using some of those for Price isn't just a simple swap.

Ben Zobrist averages 18 HR, 78 RBI, and a .786 OPS over a season. Replacing Ackley with Zobrist would be a huge step forward for this offense.

Let's say we hold onto that 2nd Wild Card spot with this trade proposal. Then you have King Felix in a 1 game playoff against, say the Angels. Then, after he dominates because that's what the King does, you have Price, Kuma, and Paxton (maybe) for the ALDS.

I'm rosterbating so hard right now!

adding price would be wonderful.

however, starting pitching isn't the reason we're behind superior teams in our very own division.

until this team supplements an already great pitching staff with at least a top 10 offense, it will always have to settle for having a potential sniff of a potential playoff appearance against a barrage of truly complete teams.

Good idea...lol. I have been preaching that for like two months. Rent him for the playoff run and then flip him in the off season ala Cliff Lee trade....but with better return than Smoak I would hope.

zobirst is a 33 year old .260 career hitting utilityman whose best years (which weren't particularly amazing) are behind him.

he hit 12 home runs in a complete season last year, and is on pace to hit fewer than that this year, so no idea where people are getting inflated numbers from.

he's already basically a utility player for the rays with 54 games at 2B, 22 at SS, and 15 in the OF. and his defensive numbers in the outfield, particularly when it comes to range, are worse than ackley's.

i marvel at this organization's priorities, and how some "fans" jump right on board with it every fucking year.

yeah, that could yield dividends for next year. if a price deal happens, i'll probably be happy.

so yeah, it probably won't happen.

If it is Price and Zobrist, then every prospect should be available. Right now DJ for Price would be a great deal in terms of value. You can't trade the top pitching prospect and hitting prospect for just Price. A Price and Zobrist deal is along the same trade value lines as for just Stanton.

I would take Stanton over Price and Zobrist.

M’s Have Discussed Zobrist, Price, Willingham, Byrd, Viciedo

By Jeff Todd [July 17, 2014 at 9:51pm CDT]
9:51pm: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Mariners’ talks with the Rays have been more focused on Zobrist than Price, and the two sides have been discussing Zobrist “for weeks.” Nick Franklin‘s name has frequently come up in talks, he adds.
Heyman also reports that the Mariners have spoken to the Twins about Josh Willingham and the White Sox about Dayan Viciedo, and he notes that he, too, has heard Byrd’s name in learning of the Mariners’ trade talks. One big league source tells Heyman, however, that a deal for Byrd is now “less than likely” due to his no-trade clause.
He also adds that the Mariners’ ownership group is very big on bringing in players who want to be in Seattle. Offseason comments by Price’s agent about his client not wanting to sign a long-term deal in Seattle seem to indicate that Price doesn’t fit that description. However, the team’s status as a legitimate postseason contender may have changed Price’s thinking on that front.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mariners' trade talks with the Rays have revolved more around Ben Zobrist than David Price.
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reported earlier Thursday that the two clubs were discussing a deal involving both players, but Heyman hears that Zobrist "has been the main focus of the talks, with those discussions going on for weeks." Heyman doesn't dismiss the possibility of the M's going after Price (they were linked to him over the offseason), but it sounds like he might be on the back burner for now. According to Heyman, Nick Franklin's name has been involved in the Zobrist discussions. Jul 17 - 11:00 PM

I like Zobrist deal if connected to Price deal. If it is just Zobrist, not a big move one way or another depending on the return to them.

He'd be a huge improvement over Ackley, Miller, or Chavez. Just don't think Zobrist puts the over the top.

I understand the feeling from an old school manager, but how many multi rbi games does Montero need before he replaces Corey Hart as the DH?

And doesn't Todd Coffee have an out clause here soon? We need to move a reliever while they have value, whether that's Coffee or someone on the team now, replacing him with Coffee. It's free, easy value that needs to be cashed in on.

His road/home splits are atrocious. Playing in the bandbox parks on the road have helped inflate his numbers. Places like Vegas, Tuscan, New Mexico where the ball carries really well. I guess the 3 run homer he hit last night would have been a mere pop fly at Safeco. I think they are really going to make him earn his call up, even though I definately would prefer him to Hat.

Here are his splits
