Rangers sign Elliot Johnson
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
The Rangers signed infielder Elliot Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League camp, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Jeff Wilson reported on Monday.

Johnson has played 318 MLB games with four organizations. He appeared in seven games with the Indians last year, hitting .105.

Dont see this being an issue, its a minor league deal but I don't see much point either with the Rosales already on the roster

I think he is taking Profar's place in the minors. Not sure about that, but that is the first thing I thought about.

Question - is there a reason strategically moving Beltre's salary a couple of million this season and next? Since they picked up the guaranteed option I wouldn't think it would make a difference or matter unless I'm missing something.

I think it is because they want very badly to keep this year's salary as low as they can. I hope this means that the tight-fisted budget approach is over after this season.

they will bring these guys to the majors when the Rangers are ready to bring them up and not a minute earlier.
Of course they will. I wasn't saying they wouldn't do that.

If they ultimately move him before the contract ends in 2016 it could save them the 2 mill this year and possibly some more if he's moved before the contract is paid in full as well, by deferring money

I get the idea that they consider Adrian untouchable.

  • The Rangers are still looking for left-handed relievers and are considering both Phil Coke and Joe Beimel, tweets Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. As Wilson notes, the team needn’t worry about a 40-man roster spot, as they can move an injured player to the 60-day disabled list if they accommodate either southpaw with a big league contract.
Ultimately think I would rather have Beimel, though I think he's looking for a multi year deal.

I said something about Beimel a few days ago. He was really tough on LHers and had good overall stats this past year. Have no desire to have Coke. He is one of those guys the fans of the other team hopes he is coming into the game.

Always loved when the Tigers brought Coke in to face us, seemed like we scored runs every time

They do, sure. But Beltre wants to win, he does not want to be a part of a rebuild. If it came to that (granted, it's very unlikely) they'd move him if he wanted it.

A rebuild wasn't related to my comment though. There isn't going to be a rebuild. We were discussing the possibility of trading Beltre at some point should we fall out of contention. I think they consider him untouchable whether we have another season where we are sellers at the deadline or not.

I don't see where falling out of contention was specifically mentioned, just the hypothetical possibilty of moving Beltre at some point and related scenarios to that.

Ya that could be. Does the new TV money start taking place next year or has it already started? Oh well it's no biggie but in general when teams do that esp in baseball with no hard cap I wonder the strategy behind it.

Even if say this season turns out to be a disappointment and Belts and the organization decide to go separate ways via trade I'd imagine they may have to cover some of that remaining salary anyways.

I think so too and I really hope so. He offers so much more than his actual production. Seeing him wearing a Rangers uniform just makes me smile and happy.

Man, looking at the DMN, EA and Prince look like they actually arrived in good shape. That's a win by itself

The only reason you would move him if you were willing to move him is if you fell out of contention. A rebuild is out of the question based on the actions of the front office to this point. Falling out of contention is a real possibility though. No, neither was mentioned, but in reality only the one is a possibility during the remainder of Beltre's time here. My reply was certainly not made with the possibility of a rebuild in mind.

The new national TV money actually started last year and was assumed to be about $30 million more per team than the previous national TV contracts. The local TV contract increase starts this year. Something happened that kept them from spending any of the additional funds this year and hopefully it is only a one year problem.
