They may not acknowledge it as one, but it fits the definition of the word gamble.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that in exchange for guaranteeing the option in advance, Beltre has agreed to juggle his salaries a bit (Twitter link). Beltre will now earn $16MM in 2015 instead of $18MM, while his 2016 salary will jump from $16MM to $18MM. like i said they don't see it as a gamble.

I honestly think they recognize Gallo is in a critical point in his development, and they want to do absolutely nothing to disrupt that.

Whether he plays 3B, RF, or 1B up here in 2016 someone is going to be changing positions if Gallo is here. Maybe it means they move Choo to another team. After today's news they certainly would not move Beltre and Prince doesn't appear to be going anywhere positionally or otherwise. We will have an interesting offseason after this season.

16 million in 2016 if option is picked up, seems pretty reasonable for his production capabilities(same as MY at the end with more production, better defense and disregarding inflation). Still a good defender and provides good production, even with a down year in hr's last season. AB had a good year even last year with virtually no protection in the lineup. Extend him another year on a team friendly deal and give him that security he's earned. You could likely move him for decent prospects if need be, and I'm betting there would be an insurance clause if some major injury did occur. These deals are always a bit of gamble because we know anything COULD happen but this one, is one that needs to be made.

Posted this yesterday but it seems appropriate today as well. Beltre also gives the Rangers a 2 million dollar discount this year to be paid next year, which seems insignificant. But hey every little bit helps as they still need a proven lefty for the pen

I love the fact that there are options as long as health isn't an issue again

They see it as a risk worth taking. It is a gamble though.

I see why they are willing to do so now. They see it as a way to defer spending a couple million bucks. They really want to limit expenses this season in a bad way.

They viewed not giving Prince a full physical as not being a gamble as well. It was though.

The team is forced to take many gambles along the way, but some they choose to take.

That could happen, but then the same questions will be there because I think most believe Beltre will be back in 2017 as well.

He could also prove he is ready by late July of this year. I sure hope he is ready before 2017 because I think our next window is tied to him, Alfaro, Mazara, Chi Chi and Thompson being acclimated to the big leagues by 2017. If he doesn't get here until 2017 I really don't think our window opens until 2018.

Rangers sign Elliot Johnson
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
The Rangers signed infielder Elliot Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League camp, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Jeff Wilson reported on Monday.

Johnson has played 318 MLB games with four organizations. He appeared in seven games with the Indians last year, hitting .105.

Dont see this being an issue, its a minor league deal but I don't see much point either with the Rosales already on the roster

they will bring these guys to the majors when the Rangers are ready to bring them up and not a minute earlier.

Question - is there a reason strategically moving Beltre's salary a couple of million this season and next? Since they picked up the guaranteed option I wouldn't think it would make a difference or matter unless I'm missing something.

Glad they picked up his option. If Beltre were a FA today he would probably get the same deal as Victor Martinez. So 16MM for an extra year is not a bad deal at all. Plus the likelihood he falls of a cliff a la 2012 MY does not seem that high to me. I get why anyone would be gun shy given the Ranger's luck lately, but this should be a good extension.

edit...

Just saw the bit about Beltre being willing to take 16 this year for 18 next. That's fine with me. It lowers the payroll 2MM this year and gives them some freedom to do whatever they need to do.

They saved 2mil for 2015. Still need a lefty in BP. May come in handy. Just guessing.

Pretty much. Any wiggle room is good wiggle room. If they become contenders 2 mil here and two mil there could be a big difference in moves they might be able to make.

If they ultimately move him before the contract ends in 2016 it could save them the 2 mill this year and possibly some more if he's moved before the contract is paid in full as well, by deferring money

  • The Rangers are still looking for left-handed relievers and are considering both Phil Coke and Joe Beimel, tweets Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. As Wilson notes, the team needn’t worry about a 40-man roster spot, as they can move an injured player to the 60-day disabled list if they accommodate either southpaw with a big league contract.
Ultimately think I would rather have Beimel, though I think he's looking for a multi year deal.
