I said that Baltimore still has $15M, I don't think we do.

Oh, maybe I just confused this with the Rangers. I tend to think as a few others have posted, that we are pretty much done. Maybe another small signing or two for the bench, bp, or a SP rotation competitor.

@Windingmywatch-Would be great and really put us over the top if we could scoop up Nellie to DH but I stopped expecting that when we signed Choo- still hope for it though. Guess it all depends if we are tapped out or not.

I can't we have topped out yet. Given the chance at signing a decent SP I believe we would. Yoon or Burkett for example. We still need pitching.

Yeah, the payroll is only a little under 2 million away from where we were last season. So $15M or Nellie would be a real stretch unless they significantly upped there payroll this season. There has been no indication of this, so we probably looking at pretty much the roster of the 2014 Ranger squad.

It's possible but I think either of them would likely command more than $5M per season which would put us at record numbers for our payroll. Then again, I think we get some money back on Fielder and I am not sure if that is factored in or even coming this season. Also, you have to think about if any of the minor league contracts get picked up by the Rangers. This is likely to increase the payroll by a few million two.

Still need to sign Mitch

Forgot about that... so we already are likely to see record payroll numbers. I guess they could attempt to restructure a few contracts though.

What will that take?

Well, last year he got $502,700, at least that but I would guess he is due a decent increase this season. Also, I think we still have several others as well. Scheppers, Ross, Profar, Tepsch... among others.

Somewhere around 4 million. That's just a guess.

I hope someone can come up with the exact article regarding these numbers. But if memory serves, the team and Mitch were about 3/4 mil apart with their initial offerings, and it seemed like MM was aiming around 3.2 mil.

Am I close? Someone, surely has this at their fingertips. I hope anyway.

I just don't see the value of signing Choo and trading for Fielder if you are then going to leave a hole in the #5 spot that has been vacant since Aug 2, 2013.

The Texas Rangers have offered first baseman-designated hitter Mitch Moreland a one-year deal worth $2.025 million. He has requested $3.25 million. That margin of difference may force the parties into an arbitration hearing.

Yeah, I feel the same way about that. And who knows they might try and restructure some deals and make it work but I guess it really depends on where they want to go with payroll and what will fit within that. I think if we stay with what we got we will definitely be competitive but locking up a better 5 hole hitter would really instill a lot more confidence. Who know Andrus might have a career season. Profar might break out with no worries about where he is playing in the field everyday.

I don't believe MM is as bad as most people make him out to be. Mitch has had 1 full season where he was given the starting job on a daily basis. His biggest problem has been staying healthy. Since 2010 he has 1560 plate appearances. Average for a 162 game season breaks out to 253/318/440 with 23 HR's and 68 rbis. For the money it would take to sign Morales or resign Cruz, I feel MM needs to be given this year as more or less his last chance as a Ranger. A lot of players take 3 or 4 years to find their groove and just maybe MM fits into that category. Just hope he can stay healthy to see what we can get out of him in a full season.

My original post "... if you are then going to leave a hole in the #5 spot that has been vacant since Aug 2, 2013."

Mitch is not slotted to be batting 5th. That's where the hole is.

IMO ... if your DH is batting 6th - 9th ... you have the wrong guy DHing. Offensive specialist ought to be at the top half of the order ... not the bottom half.

Mitch very well may breakout fully in 2014 ... but then I'd expect him to be batting 5th ... not 6th. If TEX isn't slotting him #5 ... then the hole is still there that opened up back last August.

Neither Andrus, Profar or (a not mentioned) Martin are prospective offensive protection for Beltre.

That's true. It looks like at the moment that is going to be up to Rios or possibly Moreland. I'm like you, I prefer Cruz there or even Morales but now that I look where we are on payroll and all of the loose ends on smaller contracts we still have, its hard to see them doing anything realistically, even on a team friendly deal. I hope I'm wrong though. It just seems like the FO is sending every signal it can that MM is the DH and he is going to get one last shot in the starting lineup. I think Choice is their backup if that doesn't pan out.

Yep, my mistake. I just jumped to the conclusion you were referring to MM. Rios I guess is actually penciled in to the hit 5th and he really doesn't fit the bill. Would rather see Rios and MM switched, but MM must prove he can at least give Beltre some consistent protection.

I don't see Rios going anywhere so to improve the 5 hole MM would be the odd man out. I would rather give MM another year than go after someone for at double or triple the money.
