Wonder if I could find any Yankees fans who called the Yu signing stupid, because he is unproven and it is too much money. Wonder what their take on this is :)

"Tanaka's so much better" "Darvish sucks" "YANKEES!!!!!!"

Sounds about right... no?

Yeah...give me King Felix.

I called it. Although I was pretty certain there were only 2 teams he would go to. Now they should start coming off the board

Yankees was my original call as well, even before they saved money on A-Roid this year

Dodgers were 2nd,

7/155 was WAY too much money for Tanaka

Guess the old Yankees are back. This is another massive contract that could be questionable. Ellsbury is a concern, McCann was good but expensive, Beltran was just stupid. And Johnson and Roberts to replace Cano. :noidea:

Let me see, stay in Japan or come to the U.S. and make $22 mill a year.

You are right, too much. Yankees back to hamstringing themselves like the Angels.

Both those franchises have huge money and huge TV deals. It would take A LOT for them to be truly hamstrung financially.

All that said I was shocked to hear what Tanaka got. He better be tough mentally otherwise if he doesn't perform the way he's expected, the NY fans and media will eat him up alive.

Rumor had it ( I think it was MLB radio), that Garza may be willing to take a shorter deal to rebuild his value. If this is so, should we make a run at him? Hell, we've already shelled out a bunch for him, he was disappointing but honestly he kept us in almost every game he pitched ( giving up 4 runs with our offense often meant defeat), and our offense will be improved this year. And we need an SP! If another team gives him a 4 year deal, then "sayonara Matt", but if we could get a 2 year deal, then maybe it's worth a shot?

a year at 12-14M with a team option 2nd year at 14-16M would be as high as i'd go.

I really hope this deal works out for the Yankees like the angels big deals have. There's a pretty decent chance of it

Except Tanaka is only 25, although he looks much older, whereas the Angels signed players on wrong side of 30, or 40 in PooHoles' case. I think the Ellsbury deal will probably be the most halo-like.

Getting him for another year, would that make us eligible for compensation if he left after this year?

It can hamstring them enough so that if players for example in the case of the Angels like Pujols and Hamilton do not perform you are in a bind. You can only go after so many of the top players available as each big money deal weighs you down and increases the risk and so like the Angels you pick up middle of the road pitchers because of it.
