This is another one of Mayhew's "sacred cows".
Below average to poor hands, below average speed and gets stripped by 190lb DB's on the regular.
Dude has shown nothing other than an ability to be an above average blocker in space. Those guys are a dime a dozen coming out of college.

Not a big fan of the signing, but I didn't want to draft a TE in the front end of the draft with other needs warranting more attention. He cleaned up some of his bigger deficiencies this past year, but he still will never be a game changing player by any stretch. IMO he's hit his ceiling

Don't overpay, cross TE off the offseason checklist and head into next season with Pettigrew/Fauria/Williams

Delanie Walker is significantly faster, but not as good overall.
I would say having Williams makes it tough to add another TE. He's a guy that did little except block and college, and he is a 7th rounder that hasn't done anything in the pros.
As much as I would like him to be more, Pettigrew is a decent starter with little to no depth behind him. I wouldn't mind a few of the other options available in FA, but we may be able to get him at a better price. There is actually a decent TE market. Graham is the only game changer, but there are a lot of solid guys out there: Keller, Chandler, Dickson, Ballard, and Pitta just to name a few.

So that's two people who think Pettigrew is better than Walker. I respect that even though I'm not sure I agree.

But perhaps you missed my point, Walker signed a deal that averages $4.375m/yr. Are you suggesting that BP, who you feel is the better player of the two deserves a larger contract than that?

The group of guys that perhaps you think is a better comparison (Celek, Carlson, Bennett, Olson, Daniels, H. Miller, Lewis, and Z. Miller) would average out to about $5.7m/yr. BP isn't even close to being worth that type of $.

His 2013 cap hit was just under $3.5m and that was too much. 416 yards, 2 TD's, and a list fumble is what that got us. If Millenhew spends that type of $ to bring back that little of production then he truly is the worst GM in the league. Absolutely clueless.

I don't like Mayhew anymore than you do.(Nobody hates him as much though) But Walker doesn't do what Pettigrew does and has a reputation for being a cancer in the locker room. Guys like Jimmy Graham (Check out HIS dropped passes)and Antonio Gates aren't fair comparisons to TEs that also serve a part of the run game IMO. The production in receptions and yards would be great. But their kind of TE is a glorified WR, often splitting out wide. Vernon Davis too. (I can support Quackerjacked's statement if BP being a poor mans Whitten)Can't say what I feel would be fair market value, as I don't really know. But as for who's skill set Id rather have, its BP by a wide margin over Walker. (Once Suh is resigned money for FA's won't be an issue.)

Unfortunately I no longer can agree. We are $6.8m over the cap now, and that doesn't count the new Raiola contract. It doesn't count the minimum $2m that Bell will cost nor does it count this new Pettigrew contract. It also doesn't count the rookie contracts, the practice squad, and the 52nd and 53rd contracts.

We don't have a backup QB and from what I'm told on here paying $3.25m for one is money well spent. Adding to the problem even further is that $6.8m overage already has the nearly $2m savings from cutting Leroy Harris factored in. That means the only real savings from cuts will come from Delmas and Burleson. That's not even close to enough. You can get additional $ from a new contract for Suh but I don't see where, or how, that leaves anything for free agency.

You said the same thing all last offseason. Money will show up, I guarantee it.

You're right it will, and as a result the Lions will NEVER get out of cap hell.

Delmas should be getting the same type of call before March 1st. That would be 6 mil savings for his release.

Delmas gone

Lions released FS Louis Delmas.
The move frees up $6 million in cap space, and including the release of Nate Burleson, gives the Lions $11.5 million in new room. Delmas was due a $500,000 roster bonus on March 15. Delmas has been injury prone throughout his five-year career, but appeared in all 16 games for the first time in 2013. He was an every-down player, tallying 64 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions across 1,058 snaps. Delmas' past injury issues and salary make the move justifiable, but it's a bit surprising for a team that's had so much trouble in the secondary. Delmas is a top-five option in a safety market led by Jairus Byrd and T.J. Ward.

Rumor is he ran full speed and tried to spear-tackle the door on his way out, but missed and KO'd Nate Burleson.

Burly's cap hit would have been 7.5 mil.... His base pay of 5.5 mil for this upcoming season is the only savings. He already received his signing bonus of 700k and the misc. bonus of 1.3+ mil was from a previous restructures that was factored into his cap hit. Savings for 2014 season 5.5 mil...

Now we just need to re-sign Suh and the Lions are sitting on a ton of cap space.
