According to Miguel, aka CAP god, Pats will start offsasin at

$7.33million under CAP including Hernandez 7.5 million hit

$2 million saving by cutting Sopoaga

$3.76 million by converting Mankins salary to bonus Ways to reduce Mankins? cap number :Patriots Salary Cap

That puts us $13 million under CAP and according to MIguel Pats can even cut Amendola and save around $2.88 million in 2014.Danny Amendola ? Cap Scenarios :Patriots Salary Cap

Pats can cut Wilson and Kelly for $2.4 million and can extend Wilfork and save $5 million there so Pats can easily get to $20 million under CAP if they want to which should allow Pats to resign our key free agents and maybe ge a pass rusher.

agreed. make wilfork restructure for peanuts or cut him, then sign mack. i think swaping wilfork cap for mack would be brilliant.

Sometimes I think they've become the NFL version of the Bruins when Harry Sinden was the GM...they're content to be in the mix every year but they won't sell out the franchise when it comes to spending big on FAs that could bring another Championship. The Bruins went almost thirty years between Stanley Cups and it's now been nine years since the Pats won a Lombardi despite having a possible GOAT QB.

I'm not saying it's bad business because one injury to a high priced FA can damage your cap but if they screw up a couple of drafts...well, here we are.

They spend to the cap every year. I'm honestly not sure where the idea they aren't willing to spend comes from.

They don't spend to the cap if they can rollover cap space from one year to the next. The next time you hear Bob Kraft say they spend to the cap...remember the rollover.

Spending to the cap isn't bright. You some room to sign players during the year when injuries accure. By the league rules...every team has to spend to 90% of the cap.

Pats do spend close to the cap every year. 2013 dead money, all this money count towards the cap but goes right in Kraft pockets. Seems like BB has been taking tips from Rick Pitino on how to run a salary cap. Leon Washington was cut the given a second contract Austin Collie counts 3 times towards the cap. Name Cap

Yes I do, it allows Kraft to tell everyone on the radio this weekend we are always spending to cap. To hint to fans that Aqib Talib will have to take a below market contract to stay in New England, with his injuries and us being right up against cap. That Talib loves it here and we will do our best to sign him. I heard this before with Welker and we signed Danny Amendola soon to be Dead Money either 2014 or 2015. JDM do you know what dead money is BAD salary cap management, it handcuff us from signing impact free agents, it lets you brag on how our GM is the best because we let Brandon Lloyd go and replaced him with a rookie. JDM you tell me Brandon Lloyd cap hit 3,500,000 replaced by Aaron Dobson $623,340. Total cap hit 4,123,340 was Dobson worth that or was it bad salary cap management.

The Pats manage the CAP as well s any team in football. Anyone that says otherwise is mistaken. People make it sound like somehow BB does not understand why he lets a player go. Hernandez is $7.5 million of the dead money and nobody saw that coming. every team in the NFL has dead money. It is a large part of managing the CAP by pushing some money forward.

Bad Salary CAP management and horrible drafting. Lord how do we EVER win a game.

So how are you saying it's money in kraft's pocket if it's money they spent? That's absurd.

15million in dead money is pretty solid by NFL standards. Few teams have much less, a lot have substantially more.

I'm on board for it as a strategy, though. Very few free agents turn out to be bigtime difference makers, and it often takes multiple years even when they do. Free agents don't work as quick fixes; spending big doesn't win playoff games.

That's not to say you don't want free agents, just the expectation that you can spend and turn that into wins is wrong. You pay for specific players to fill specific roles, and even then half the time it doesn't work out.

pats usually spend up to the cap they save about 5 mill always just to have some room to make additional moves if they need to. lloyd actaully sign here cheap he could have got alot more elswhere but he was holding out for the pats. they asked him to lower his price. it was a good signing at the time with our wr situation and mcdaniels coming back. unfortunatly the pats were so thin at wr he got most of the defense attention, hes really a number 2 and needs a stud #1 opposite him to be effective. we just didnt have a #1.

How do I not understand. I explained why the numbers you are talking about are to signs of bad cap management, as they are the same or better than most of the league in dead money. It is essentially impossible to not have at least 10 million worth of dead money with how contracts nowadays are structured.

Keep misrepresenting things as much as you'd like, but you just come across as not having a clue what you're talking about.

Obviously you spend too much time on the Pats and not quite enough on english as a first language or more aptly the art of writing a literate post. You are obviously lacking in any written skills.

I would say you are a douche but I am betting I will be accused of inciting a riot for poking some testosterone laden illiterate twit.

Now to get back to the point after the child has had his say. Most of us disagreed with the Lloyd release but none of us know what issues were involved in the locker room which may or may not have been an issue. Lloyd's CAP hit for 2014 is $1.5 million in dead money. The Fanane dead money of $1.5 million is the result of deception by Fanene due to an injury. Remove Hernandez and the Pats really have little dead money in comparison.

The remainder are primarily there because dead money resulting from bad draft picks or simply players released because they cannot play or injuries made them not viable like dowling whose bonus money was spread over last year and this. It is a fact of life in the NFL.

NFL Player Contracts, Salaries, and Transactions

This site has reasonable info on all sports teams and good stuff on NFL.

Look closely at Seattle. They have no CAP space and multiple top players are UFA and they need new contracts soon for superstars on defense and Wilson is 1-2 years from a major contract. It is an illusion that Seattle will go on a long run because they have to pay Sherman, Wilson, Wagner, Thomas, Okung and many others. Hard choices need to be made and they can make them but they will lose players and damn good ones. Browner, Thurmond, Bennett, and Tate and others are up this year.

They can get CAP space but only by redoing contracts or cutting players like Rice that cost you dead money. It is part of doing business in the NFL.
