I have to chuckle at Oilers fans who state "hey, we're not following the Islanders path"

/Actually, they're right, the Isles could and hopefully will make the playoffs this year.

Damn!! Could you imagine Seguin/Hall, Nugent Hopkins & Yakupov playing with Tavares?

The Oilers are following their own path. The problem is nobody really knows where they're going.

My team is going to be playing in a brand new arena the year after next. They have so many cap friendly contracts it's sick. Stay patient Garth & everything will fall into place.:D:

I also crack up when people say the Oilers follow the Pittsburgh/Chicago path...sure, except they don't have a clue how to run a front office. Therein lies the difference. Isles are set. Nabby is great, but I do think they need a young goalie to groom. Options in house?

Goalie is the big question this offseason. No word on whether or not Nabby is coming back next season. I don't think Poulin is ready to be a #1 goalie & Anders Nilsson has just come back from being very ill. It took quite awhile for doctors to figure out what the problem was.

If Nabby doesn't come back there are two guys that pop out at me as possibilities going forward.

1.Anton Khudobin UFA Boston Bruins. Making 875K this season. His salary would certainly fit well with the Isles. Something along the lines of 3 years at 2.25 to 2.75 per year.

2.Trade market. Jonathan Bernier!!

This offseason might be the perfect time to trade Grabner. His contract is going to escalate in terms of money he's to be paid after next season. Yet his cap hit will remain at 3M. I like him & want to keep him, but he deserves to be in the top 6, not the 3rd line.

Didn't mention that the Pens signed the Quinnipac goalie, did we? Eric Hartzell. Hobey Baker nominee. Very intriguing move. Hockey News had a good bit on it. It's only for this year, but he'll be RFA if the Pens give him his qualifying offer.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 39m
College UFA F Antoine Laganiere of Yale has agreed to terms with ANA.

I think Gillis was going after Antoine pretty hard, 6'4" center, good signing by the Ducks, cushions the blow from the Justin Schultz snub.

/2 year deal

That sounds great. Only one problem Roy makes 4M this season. How big of a discount do you think he'd give the Canucks?

The Canucks are in Cap Hell next year & it's not going to get any easier because their FRANCHISE players (THE SEDINS) are going to become UFA's at the end of next season. The only positive thing about that is 12.2M will be coming off the cap.

Have fun with the cap issues & don't expect the rest of the league to do Gillis any favors.

Haha, you're truly giddy because of the cap space the Isles have...and I don't blame you one bit.

Yeah, I'm happy about the Isles cap space, but it has nothing to do with the post.

I just don't see how the Canucks can keep everybody they want to keep. I know some team will acquire Luongo from them, but I find it hard to believe that team will take on his entire contract. Plus if Luongo retires before the contract ends which is very likely the Canucks will get some of the remaining money added to their cap. Resigning the Sedins will obviously be top priority. How much they want is anybody's guess.

Gillis has a tough summer awaiting him. He's got some tough decisions to make. He certainly isn't going to get what he thought he would for Luongo that's for certain.

I know, it was the tone of it that just reminded me of the Isles cap. One advantage: I don't think the Sedins can play together in any other city...most likely. Not a team they'd really want to be on I'd assume.

Lets see ... Burke tampered and was on his way to the Sedins hometown last time around with an offer that was higher than the canucks and they ended up signing with the canucks ... for less ... and then quickly gave away $1.5 million dollars to BC Childrens Hospital

what swede leaves a city for dollars? (other than Sundin AFTER Toronto didnt want him anymore) I see them signing probably 1 to 2 year deals each to stay in vancouver FOR LESS ... yes i said it ... they will take the HOMETOWN DISCOUNT ... like so many other have before lol

bringing up that the canucks have a future cap hit liability coming in the WHEN Luongo retires is just a dumb red herring ... how many years away is that? ... and how much higher will the overall salary cap be by then>???

the script is pretty clearcut for Gillis ... if they cant be traded for spare jock straps ... buyout Booth ... buyout Ballard ... give Luongo away

Every team needs a Center. He's by far the best Center Toronto has & they aren't even sure they can afford him for some reason. I won't be surprised one bit if Bozek gets 5M or more. Look at Tim Connolly's last two contracts. Bozek is going to get PAID!!
