Sure they improved. It doesn't mean soriano puts them "over the top" or even guarantees them a postseason series win. It doesn't mean it's not a huge overpay. Sure they improved the team, but at what cost when there are no guarantees?

Yes but sometimes you have to try to see if it works.

Here’s what I think the Diamondbacks want: Mike Olt, Luis Sardinas and a top pitching prospect (either Martin Perez or Cody Buckel). The Rangers have long been willing to give up Olt to make the Arizona deal happen, but the shortstop and pitcher the Rangers were more willing to move was Leury Garcia. As for the pitcher, I’m not sure who the Diamondbacks valued more and who the Rangers were willing to part with. I still don’t think this is done. Elephants are the only creatures that seem to have longer gestation periods than this Rangers-D’backs deal.

I would do that deal

It's an awful deal. Plain and simple. Huge overpay. There's no way he meets the value of that contract.

Who cares? A Major League baseball team disagrees with you. They have the money to spend. They want to win. You don't like it, but they really don't give a shit.

Consider this. That is double what were paying Nathan. Do you think he's twice as good as Nathan? Yeah, me either.

Nathan didnt have good numbers hitting free agentcy was also coming off a injury. Another great deal is getting soria for 8 million. Because hes not old and he can be another nathan type pitcher again.

Exactly. A team only does that if it really helps the team. That bullpen is really sick though for the nationals.

And that means I'm not allowed to call a spade a spade? Chill out bud. Major league teams make stupid deals all the time. Just because I'm not a FO person for a ML team doesn't mean I'm not allowed to point out the painfully obvious.

No reliever is worth 14m a yr. plain and simple.

My point is you've said the same thing about many of the deals UFA's have received this offseason. Some teams have higher payrolls than others. The Nationals believe they can win the World Series. For a team in their position it makes sense. They'll make the money back with ease.

You think Texas didn't think they'd be in position to win the World Series if they had acquired Hamilton, Greinke, Soriano, and Upton (they still might)? Sure they would. But they're not going to give out awful contracts and mortgage the future so they can have a "fantasy baseball team" right now. That method rarely works. Just look at where the angels ended up last season after their big splash signings. Frankly, Texas is still a contender and they haven't handcuffed themselves for the future.

Yes I've said teams have given out awful contracts this season, and its true. Ask any baseball analyst or sports writer with a brain cell. Yes, some teams have higher payroll budgets than others, but an overpay is an over pay, and a bad contract is a bad contract no matter how big your payroll is. I'm glad my team isn't handing out these awful deals. Especially with the terms of the new CBA.

The Nationals sellout every game. This is what teams do when they believe they can win it all. I really don't have a problem with it. You're far to worried about the future & the Rangers prospects. The Nationals will have a very talented roster for years to come.

And it's how you wind up with bad contracts on aging players. I'm fine with my team giving out big money on the right guy. This isn't one of those cases. I don't give a damn what the nationals do. I'm still allowed to call a spade a spade and I'm glad Texas isn't giving out these awful deals. The angels and dodgers will feel the pain of their stupidity soon enough.

The Angels have a $3 billion dollar TV deal. The Dodgers are going to get much more than that from their TV deal when it's done. These 2 teams don't have to worry about bad contracts. The Dodgers don't even care if they spend over the cap threshold.

You like everyone else have a right to your opinion. I respect it, I just think we shouldn't be surprised with the amount of money being spent on players.

Trust me, their poor choices will come back to them even if you just look at the implications of the CBA alone. People have said what you're saying many times and it still comes back to bite teams that try to money whip their way to a WS. My guess is when the angels cannot sign trout because of all the money they have tied up in aging declining players they might start to curse dipoto.

I dunno, paying that much for a 32 year old relief pitcher, that I believe is costing them picks as well? This seems like the type of "win now" move a team strapped for cash that will lose most of their players to free agency would make, I don't think the Nats fall into that category.

Time will tell if it pans out for them but after the K-Rod debacle for the Mets I don't trust closers enough to shell out that much money.

The Angels have 5 years to figure out how to keep Trout. By that time Vernon Wells will be off the books at the very least.
