Just saying don't expect him to be a major contributor. He's just an emergency plan.

Just heard no C.C. Sabathia to face this week against the Yankees. Would think at least a split would be reasonable in that 4 game series

okay i agree with that

Posted it on the other thread ... its going to get very long for Soto if Martinez isn't getting half the starts until Napoli is able to come back.

I would use the 2 on 2 off rotation ... Martinez was hitting well at AAA and needs to get the regular work or Soto just off the DL with knee surgery will die in the heat.

At the very least a 3 on 2 off rotation.

It will probably be same kind of rotation that you saw with Napoli and Soto. 4 and 1. Martinez gets a start every 5th day

With the Texas heat that could be brutal.

In a nutshell....yeah. Have to listen to the audio to get the full answer / his reasoning behind it.

In all honesty, he's not a "what have you done for me lately" type of manager. He'd rather go with the proven guy over the "now" guy.

I heard that interview as well. Wash's has got MY's back sink or swim.

Don't think we ever saw a Napoli/Soto rotation. Soto hasn't been here long enough.

However, if that Napoli/Soto rotation was 4/1 ... then not sure just because Napoli goes out you can instantly make the Soto/Martinez rotation 4/1 with Soto getting 4x the work instantly because Napoli is out.

There is the thing too that TEX may begin wondering if Napoli will be part of the post season ... so makes good sense to figure out if Martinez can perform ... way you do that is by playing. That's why I think TEX OUGHT to go to a 2/2 or worst case 3/2 rotation.

Course ... we all think Olt and Gentry OUGHT to be getting more playing time so while we may all be looking to find ways to reduce the workload that's real heavy through end of August with only 1 day off ... the field manager may want to do it a different way.

Angels lost 2 of 3 to the Mariners, including today's game which Weaver started. Also, Pujols is batting .233 in August including .087 in the past week. Him going back into a prolonged slump could be the end of the Angels playoffs hopes, in my opinion.

Edit: Make that .212 for August, didn't have today's game factored in on his splits.

Replacing my earlier post same subject.

At the moment TEX has a 13 man pitching staff and for the most part using only 9 of their 12 position players.

Normal post season rosters usually have 11 man pitching staffs with 14 position players. To be playoff eligible guys have to be on active roster or the DL.

-Uehara is due to start rehab on 15 Aug and has a month minus the rehab days he already spent rehabbing ... but bet he's kept off the active roster until Sep. So he is probably 26th post season eligible player.

-Napoli went on the 15day DL on 11 Aug so is eligible to return on 26 Aug plus gets 20 days of rehab which pushes him into September. So he would the 27th (13th posn player) playoff eligible player.

-I don't think TEX wants to risk having only 4 OFers playoff eligible ... and Martin is hot in AAA (last 10 games: .313/.362/.484/.847). With Kirkman being a very effective backup for Ross I think Scheppers gets demoted on 30 Aug to make room for Martin to be the 14th position player to be playoff eligible.

-A question might be ... does TEX demote Martinez on 31 Aug to clear a spot in order to make room for a UIF to be eligible? This would leave TEX with 1 catcher until Napoli returned ... and then with expanded roster it reactivated Martinez as soon as he was eligible. Martinez could cover one of the C positions then if there were an injury in Sep. However, TEX is still without a UIF.

-However, assuming Napoli is back on 1 Sep TEX uses Martinez' spot to make room for a UIF to be playoff eligible. They need to make a move to fill the vacant 40-man spot with a UIF regardless or TEX has no protection in the infield going into the playoffs because all of their middle infielders on the 40-man are already active.

So ... Luis Hernandez, Mike Fontenot, or Greg Miclat could still be in 25-man mix instead of Luis Martinez. If Martinez is kept active ... then Martin would only be playoff eligible if one of TEX position players were injured in Sep.

So ... Scheppers spot could be used for the UIF ... and Martinez spot could be used for Martin ... but then Martinez would not be playoff eligible. Only in this way will TEX have 14 position players playoff eligible.

-TEX will take either 12 or 11 pitchers tothe post season. Assuming Scheppers is not active leaving TEX with 12 pitchers active on 31 Aug ... and with Uehara due back (bringing the eligibles back to 13)... that means a minimum of one currently active pitcher (or on DL) gets left off the post season roster.

-So ... here are my 12 post season roster pitchers: Dempster (SP), Harrison (SP), Feldman/Holland (SP), Yu (SP), Nathan (CL), Adams, Uehara, Ogando, Holland/Feldman, Ross, Oswalt, Lowe ... with Kirkman not making the post season roster. Means Martin or UIF are left off the post season roster

-If TEX goes with the normal 11 pitchers in order to carry Martin and the UIF ... then Lowe gets left off the roster. With no other realistic middle of the infield protection and to provide 5 OFers ... I think this is the option TEX makes.

Sidenote: Dave Sims is a pretty decent PBP guy. I'm jealous.

I saw the recap on tv. Pretty amazing. Also Melky Cabrera suspended 50 games today for positive test for PED's.

No shocker there, went from very mediocre to very good WAY too suddenly

Yeah, not really a power binge but batting .346 this year when his previous high was last year at .305 and before that .280 in 2006.
