So, I've gone through the 25 man roster as I see it and here's how I see payroll being distributed (in millions) estimates for unsigned players are in [brackets]:

Zito 18.5
Rowand 12
Timmy 13
Huff 10
DeRosa 6
Franchez 6
Affeldt 4.5
Cain 7
Miggy 6.5
Ross [6]
Weez 6.5
Chez [6]
Ramirez [2]
Burrell 1
Fonty [2]
Lopez [2]
Casilla [1]
Panda 0.5
Torres [4]
Ishi 0.5
Romo 0.5
Nate 0.5
Eli 0.5
Runz 0.4
Bum 0.4
Buster 0.4
TOTAL 116.7

I think we'll end up dealing Rowand and signing Rent for $1MM, eating half of Rowand's contract so that would bring payroll to 111.7.

Thoughts?

My thought: perfect. Leaves plenty of room for adding salary at the deadline. A Sabean certainty. :).

Rowand is at 13.6, but that's an "accounting" figure to spread his bonus over the life of the contract. Nevertheless, I think the official payroll will reflect 13.6 and not 12.

Check out COTS' spreadsheet.

I was looking for that spreadsheet; I've got it bookmarked at home but not at work. Thanks. What do you think of my estimates for the unsigned players?

Torres sticks out as being on the high side.

Adjusting for prorated signing bonuses (boni?), I have us at 121.6 for 2011.

Looks good, so far. I'm thinking with the way the NL has stockpiled pitchers, Zito and/or Rowand might not make it out of spring training with the Giants.

I was thinking about that this morning. There seems to me to be a team with deep pockets in pretty severe need of an innings-eating workhorse that doesn't wish to part with its blue chip catching prospect.

We seem to be a team in need of a salary dump of an innings-eating workhorse that is not looking for a catching prospect.

Maybe the stars are aligning for a mitigation of "MacGowan's Boner?"

Two trade ideas:

Zito for Arodys Vizcaino; or
Zito and Rowand for Corban Joseph

Would they bite?

I'm telling you - it makes sense to me. As long as you can score Zito 4+ runs a game, he'll get you 20 wins.

Looks like a question for Baggerly, but I like the idea of trading them for minor league prospects. Although isn't Vizcaino a Brave? Of course, I'd never heard of either of those players until reading your post.

Brilliant minds think alike. Seriously, why WOULDN'T the Yanks do this? Maybe I'll float an idea on their dum-dum board.

Do it. I'd love to see their reaction to the proposal.

Good call on Vizcaino; forget he'd been traded. I'd ask for Andrew Brackman then. I'll float it on their board and see what happens.

I don't think Torres makes more than 2 million. No one makes much in their first year of arbitration anyway.
