He won't officially retire, a la Albert Belle , we'll have to 60 day DL him, he's got 72 million reasons to not retire
I could be wrong, but I don't think you have a news conference to announce a 60 day DL stay. Now, they may give him something as an incentive to retire, but overall they should save a ton of money.

You can announce your career is over without officially retiring, it'll be some sort of roster designation where he's basically retired but not officially retired

Only 9 million, insurance only covers half, we'll still be on the hook for the other half

He retired. I thought he forfeited the salary when he retired.

They will not waste a roster spot on him this winter when the 60 day DL guys have to be placed on the 40 man.

They'll save the 9 million a year he would've gotten had he played, insurance will cover the other 9

For insurance purposes they might not have a choice, that's what happened with Albert belle

Again. If he's retiring does he not forfeit the money?

He is saying that Prince won't actually retire. I don't see them calling a news conference unless he is going to retire.

I'm betting it's him announcing his career is over but not an official retirement

We'll have to wait and see. I'd imagine he does stay around in some capacity.

If Prince leave all that money one the table I'll be shocked, then again I don't know all the rules and stipulations regarding this process

It literally just happened, A-Rod is not retiring, he's still getting his, money, he's just transferring his role on the team.... And they had a press conference... There's your precedent

Some guys would because they don't want to risk their health. I believe Matt Harrison has been very close to choosing retirement a few times and he hasn't banked nearly as much as Prince.

I knew he was probably having issues with it again, by the way it was effecting his play this year.

And he knew as well. And IMO that is pretty shitty he put his desire to play in front of his teams goal, and frankly he put his own long term health at risk by not owning up to the problem earlier.

That said, I hope the surgery does indeed go well for him, and he is able to have a decent life away from the game he obviously loved so much.

He still wouldn't be playing, just not officially retired

What part of that aren't you getting? It happens quite a bit

No, they are DFAing him. They announced when his last day would be and are letting him go with some fanfare. He was going to keep on playing had they not decided to DFA him. The 2 circumstances are completely different to me.
