Its also easier to be a "great" GM with one of the highest payrolls, unlimited budget and are allowed to basically pull off any trade you want.
Ugh, if Moore wanted to gamble, why the hell would you not gamble on Hughes before Vargas? Really Moore?
Vargas is the better gamble, better WHIP and more mature and more experience..more stable...Hughes would have been a much higher risk and for the same reward...
Watch how they both pitch this year, if Hughes stays in the AL (going to the NL always seems to "improve" them, lol"
lol, sorry Big....just saw your post, lol..my bad repeating the answer.
I actually like this signing by the Royals. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by Vargas. He isn't overpowering, but he is a guy that will eat innings for the Royals and give you double digit wins, while giving the team a good chance to win games. I think he will be helped a lot by the defense behind him in KC too.
Murphy is a fourth outfielder.
No argument there, other than the unlimited budget. Only 2, maybe 3 teams have an unlimited budget -- NYY, LAD and Boston.
As far as the trades he has made -- it has nothing to do with Detroit's budget. They traded away Granderson and in return received AJax and Scherzer (who are still under the teams control). They traded away prospects for Doug Fister (who is still under the teams control for the next 2 years).
Also you can talk about the Marlins deals, but 30 other teams had a shot to trade for players like Cabrera, Infante, Sanchez, etc. Dombrowski got the deals done and the overwhelming majority of the deals he has made it has cost the Tigers no one from their MLB roster.

no they didn't, again, affordability and inability to part with cheaper, team controlled own prospects.......I guess you missed the point.
Teams who actually have budgets use their better prospects full team control years to keep costs down and have less "big" contracts.and fewer prospects to trade..for example Tigers have 19 guys over $2m...Royals 11 guys....
you might not understand working with a MLB budget...being a Royals fan, I have learned more than I would like to know.

While Dombrowski deserves credit for his work on these deals, it would be bad to overlook the flip side. That being the fact that he pretty well fleeced other stupid G.M's in the process.
Not exactly, of course, but a yo[unger version of Bronson Arroyo. Mr. Steady Eddie. Never great, but always good, and, always there every 5th day.
All teams would love to have this guy & type as their # 4 or 5 starter.
That is just it though... He is the #2 right now.
Ouch.
That is not his fault or problem. That falls only on the Royals for that being a fact.

Could be the bat we need
Which is why you take the guy with more upside to mitigate the damage: Hughes

Could be the bat we need
and more risk...Duffy returning and Ventura could be the #2's....thats the upside you want to take risks on...not some guy your going to have to pay 32 million...
its a good signing....Hughes was actually one of the guys I didn't want, I might be biased....too high of Whip and ERA's
Let's see.
He's 32, and coming off his worse MLB sesaon by far. If that is they guy you are hanging your hopes on, heaven help you.
