If we are still stumbling in a month or two i will be the first one to be all over Hextall and Haks and the core of the team.

Solid article. Who are these Flyers? If you had to describe them in just a couple of words. Can't say they're a high powered offense that overwhelms the opponent. Can't say they're smothering d. Can't say they skate circles around anyone. Can't say they're overly physical. Group of guys that tries to play sound two-way hockey and is very inconsistent at it? Not a very good identity.
As of now, Second tier team.

Lol I'll be on that bus with you, if this season ends up a bust it will be a total disappointment and def steps backwards.

If this season is not a step forward, I think we'll see some pretty drastic changes. I don't think Hextall will let his patient rebuild and reload go to waste. I still firmly believe he's acquired good talent through the draft, if this season is a step back it's on the vets and coaches. Firing the coach and trading a core player would be in the offing I expect.

I agree, It's always hard to say and see what goes on behind the scenes, but yea I think Hexy will make Bigly changes if we don't show any progression towards becoming a more consistent winning team.

Not an overly fast team for a smaller team either.

He is only good at acquiring talent through the draft. He is terrible at signing free agents.

The free agency thing I would still say is incomplete. He's been GM for 5 offseasons now ('14 he came in right before free agency, but I would say he knew that was coming before May). But for the first few, his main direction was getting out of cap hell. But let's look at his signings..

Since May 7th, 2014, signings that were not ELC's and > 1.25M. I'm saying less than 1.25M is probably an irrelevant signing. Bold is new to the team due to the signing (ie, not brought in a trade and then re-signed).

Timonen 1 year 2M
B. Schenn 2x5
Schultz 1x1.25
Del Zotto 1x1.3

Schultz 2x2.25
Medvedev 1x3
Neuvirth 2x1.625

Del Zotto 2x3.875
Couturier 6x4.33
Voracek 8x8.25
Raffl 3x2.35
Gudas 4x3.35
Weise 4x2.35
BSchenn 4x5.125
Bellemare 2x1.45
Neuvirth 2x2.5
Ghost 6x4.5
Weal 2x1.75
Elliot 2x2.75
JvR 5x7

And a quick look at the < 1.25M to see if there was anything worth noting.

Folin 1x800k
Gordon 1x950k
Lyubimov 1x925k
Vecchione 1x925k
Lyon 1x874k

And to put it all on the table, Cap Friendly has 'Final Cap Hit' charted back to 2015-16.

15-16: Flyers 70.605M / 71.4M allowed
16-17: flyers 73.546M / 73M allowed (LTIR allowed them to be over)
17-18: Flyers, 73.651M / 75M allowed
18-19: Flyers, 71.404M / 79.5M allowed (projected with current roster)

My thoughts in the next post

All the ones in bold letters are terrible and the others are just resigning our own players

1. I think if we're being fair to Hextall, this past summer was the first year he could really go shopping. If you hold the belief that Ownership wasn't going to let him totally dismantle the team and tank (ie trade Giroux/Voracek etc.). Holmgren left him with no cap space in 15-18 and I think we can all agree Hextall probably didn't have any in Summer '14 or Summer '15 either. That's just how Holmgren operated.

2. So, with that being said, let's look at his bargain bin moves. New adds first:

Schultz - Bad player, good number
Del Zotto - Good player, good number
Medvedev - Bad player, bad number.
Neuvirth - Arguable. IMO, bad player, good number. I don't think Neuvirth is very good consistently even when he is healthy. Which he never is.
Weise - Bad player, fine number (too many years though)
Bellemare - OK player, good number
Elliot - Ok player, fine number

1 good player, 2 OK players, 4 bad players. 4 good numbers, 2 fine numbers, 1 bad number. So overall, he didn't add much talent, but didn't kill the cap doing it.

3. And his moves with cap money to spend

JvR - Good player, fine number (IMO)

Probably too early to judge this one since JvR has played what, 1 game?

Overall: So IMO, he was fine when he didn't have any cap space to spend and the JvR is a questionable signing at this point. He didn't do anything to address the PK or the goaltending and that's an issue. But the major upgrades in those areas came with bad contracts.

Gudas - Fine/OK
BSchenn - Good/OK
Nevurith - Bad/OK

Given the cap space they had though, he's not going to go out and get a great player most of those years.

The only things I would've done much different I think, would be to sign Grabner or Comeau and maybe Hickey this offseason to help with the PK.

Grabner - 3x3.35
Comeau - 3x2.4
Hickey - 4x2.5

I'm not ready to say he sucks at the offseason over that. Maybe all 3 of those guys had their hearts set on where they signed. And while I do think those guys could have helped the PK, I still firmly believe coaching is the problem there, not the personnel.

And if you want to talk about Hextall receiving a bad grade in 'coaching choices', i'm ready to agree with you.

You forgot about Carter Hutton 3 years 8.5 million that would've taken us right into the Hart era but instead we get Pickard
