Ok, just watched 'The Hateful Eight' for about the 6th time now.
It just keeps getting better and better.
It's one of those movies I won't stop watching for a while.

I think I originally rated it about a 7/10
I'm moving that up to a 9/10
I haven't rewatched that one yet. I really should make a point of doing that.

Watched it for the 2nd time because it hit Hulu recently. Love this movie. Not the strongest of endings, but still an incredible story. Reminds me a lot of Black Hawk Down. The fact that these men only got private ceremony medals for this is crazy. I know Hollywood embellishes the shit out of these true stories and I know they were contracted workers hence not directly affiliated with the US, but still...

ghostbusters with the women......fucking terrible

Starz premiered Ghostbusters this past Saturday night. I knew it would suck. But I decided to give it a chance to see if I was wrong. It did make $128M domestically. $229M world wide.

No cast could have polished that turd. Horrible writing. The ghosts looked cool. I can't believe how much money this crap made. It should have bombed hard.

Barry Lyndon: 3.5/5 stars. Classic rise-and-fall chronicle of a man's life, with the theme of fate being paramount throughout the whole film. I wouldn't say I loved it, nor do I love Kubrick (at least not from the four movies of his I've seen), but I do have to appreciate how the cinematography and natural lighting viscerally puts one in the aura of the location where the events took place. Also, props to Ryan O'Neal for giving a HELL of a performance as the titular character. I mean, this motherfucker nailed all the themes of the movie: a desire to belong, fate, and grief.

I'd recommend if you like period pieces, Kubrick, and have 3 hours to spend.

I get that Clockwork Orange was before your time, and with your ADD, you would never appreciate 2001. But you didn't like Shinning?

And the fact you speak sacrilege about Full Metal Jacket means you must burn your man card while you burn your bra.

I haven't seen Full Metal Jacket. And for the record, I gave A Clockwork Orange a rating of 4/5 stars and just recently posted on the Phillies' board that I regard it as a borderline classic.

Also, not to sound like an SJW, and I don't believe your intentions were ill, but telling someone that they "could never appreciate/like/enjoy/hate/do ......." based off having a disorder is somewhat offensive. I don't give a shit because this is an internet message board, but I thought I'd clue you in if you were ignorant of that truth. It's like telling someone with a prosthetic leg that they could never appreciate basketball (which, ironically, I think you joked about in a thread a long time ago).

I enjoyed some parts of 2001, particularly the storyline of HAL, but overall found it pretentious and empty.

As for The Shining, I gave it 2.5/5 stars. It had some AWESOME fucking parts, and then really fucked up some other parts that could have been annunciated upon to make the film really good. I'm a normal person who likes HERE'S JOHNNYYYYYY just as much as the next guy, but when Jack's alcoholism and self-demons were downplayed, I didn't enjoy it as much (although the ending of the movie is far superior to the ending of the book).

The Shining is a great example of how sometimes ratings of the same value are not the same. Sure, I may have liked The Shining and 21 Grams, Quiz Show, Mean Streets, Notorious (1946), Seven Psychopaths, etc. the same amount overall in that I gave them all 2.5/5 stars; but The Shining had some moments and scenes that (had they carried the same weight the entire movie) were around 4.5/5 stars, while other scenes were like 1/5 or 1.5/5 stars. On the other hand, the aforementioned movies were steady 2.5/5 star movies throughout for the most part.

Which do I enjoy more? Certainly, the uneven movies with awesome and bad parts.

I don't recall ever saying anything about basketball and amputees. I don't talk basketball that much. And I don't see your analogy as anywhere near similar.

2001 was a slow as fuck movie. Saying I am not surprised that you would appreciate it is more akin to saying someone who is blind would have a hard time appreciating an art show. The activity require participation from the person that goes directly after their "issue". Hell, I don't have ADD, and I have a hard time sitting through that snooze-fest. I can appreciate it, though, so maybe you can as well, for similar reasons.

Kubrick is hard to pigeon-hole. I love most of his movies, but can't stand 2001.

That whole down the wormhole part that went on and on and on and on....

Ech.

Can't agree with the concept of a film being all 5/5 scenes either. What would that mean? That the tone and pace of the movie never changes? Movies need to ramp up and ramp down with tension or suspense or whatever our plot is revealing about our characters.

Different tones can't be awesome, despite being different?

And I never said that a movie can have/should have ALL 5/5 scenes for a perfect rating. Just that some movies sustain that awesomeness longer.

That part of my post was subjective, as compared to my completely (or close to complete) final ratings of an entire film.

Yeah, I feel like he was almost pandering to the LSD crowd watching a space opera.

Oh yeah, I forgot to give my rating for 2001: 2/5 stars

Well, the enjoyment of the movie is subjective, but the correlational rating should be objective. But I guess to correlate it takes some subjectivity.

I don't think movie reviews are 100% objective of course. But the better the film critic and circumstances, the more objective they will be. i.e., not liking MI because Tom Cruise is a Scientologist is not subjective.

American Pastoral very depressing movie and I saw La La Land which I don't see anything special about it outside of the singing and dancing.

I think the best you can do is be as objective about your subjectivity as you can.

I don't get your Tom Cruise example though. Judge the movie on the movie. It's like people who hate movies that have subtitles. The movie having subtitles doesn't make it a BAD movie, just because you don't like it.

I'm not big on musicals.

But if I were to see La La Land, I'd at least try to be a bit objective, and judge the movie on its own merits, not just say, 'it sucks, it's a musical.'
