No doubt, a 6th is a good waiver on a former first round talent. Win-win imo but glad he's gone, his work ethic infuriated me.

Gotta hand it to Sashi Brown... It may look like a bummer to get rid of all these busts, but he's getting value for literally nothing. A 6th or 7th round pick for someone that is going to be released is well worth it. Even if these guys turn it around and become all-stars, it doesn't matter. I like what Sashi is doin in Cleveland. It's smart management.

I like it too, may be a long process but it's finally something that has actual direction. Only thing I'm afraid of is trading Joe Thomas, although it'd probably be the smart move since this team has zero talent in most places. They just have to hit draft picks. Hue seems like a solid hire and hopefully Haslam stays a mile away.

It's definitely a good direction. But how many times has that franchise made strides like this only to pour water on the coals as soon as the season tanks. Haslam needs to take the "what have you done for me lately" approach out of his ownership strategy. If he can stick it out with Brown & Hue for 2-3 years I would expect big things.

As for Thomas. Why not at this point in his career. He's still the undisputed #1 LT in the league, bar none. But for how much longer? At 31 years old you gotta think he has retirement on the mind. He's one of the most loyal players that I've ever seen. Would be a bummer to see him leave, but I would think its a smart move. Trade him while he still has great value.

Or it could be they know this kid is just a huge bust. From what I understand he was terrible in the locker room, didn't want to listen to coaching, and just had a terrible work ethic in general. Now maybe he can change with a new environment but you don't usually trade within your division like this unless you know the kid is bad.

I agree. So far the kid has shown good signs attitude-wise. At this point, that's all we can hope for.

“I was a little bit surprised,” said Gilbert. “I was more happy and shocked at the same time. I am just excited for this new opportunity, fresh opportunity, with these guys. Everybody has welcomed me with open arms and I am just ready to get to work.

“Words can’t even explain how excited I am right now. I am just grateful.”

Gilbert got to work with his new teammates on Monday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex as they prepare to take on the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football on Sept. 12. And he immediately liked the vibe from his new team.

“It’s a lot different,” said Gilbert. “It’s a little more laid back. Everybody here knows what this team is capable of. At the same time when we hit the practice field it was a whole different level. I am excited for that every day.

“Being around the guys in this locker room, these guys know what it takes to win a championship. You have quality leaders on offense and defense. I’m just coming in looking up to those guys and following their lead for now.”

Gilbert was selected by the Browns with the eighth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in 23 games with two starts in Cleveland, and accounted for 29 tackles, nine passes defensed, and a 23-yard interception for a touchdown. He had some issues while with the Browns, but said he has grown up a lot and is just ready to move forward.


“All I know is what I can do and what I am going to do for this franchise,” said Gilbert. “I want to go out and prove it every day. I don’t want to talk about it so much, just show it with my actions on the field and my play. I just want to continue to be consistent as I have been in the past year. Continue to show I am here every day to work and show consistency.

“Just growing up off of the field. There are a lot of things that can distract you when you come in, but after a year in the league and not getting done what I wanted to get done in my first season, it’s changed me and made me a new man.”

Of course, this IS the browns we're talking about....not exactly a bastion of sound decisions

You normally don't, but CLE knows they're not going to be competitive this year and probably not next year either...they're trying to rebuild and have discarded a lot of players from the old regime...some of them top tier draft picks.

I look at Gilbert like this...he's still the same physical talent that was 8th overall...he was sort of malcontent in CLE, and from a mental standpoint probably needed to go. What he has proven to be consistent with is the return game and that's worth a 6th round pick if he maintains that part of his game.

On top of that, he'll be able to compete for the CB4 job which will get a decent amount of snaps. If he proves himself, he's young enough to turn his career around.

Teams say these things all the time. If an offer comes along that they like they will trade him. The Browns though have been one of the toughest teams to negotiate with from what I understand as they usually have ridiculous demands.

Because it's the Browns... they are not winning anything anytime soon, might as well get something for him.
