and therein lies my exact point. Build up the rest of the team with high picks and you can then put in a Wilson, stafford, etc and make a run. Avoid taking those high picks and spending it on an RG3, or Smith, etc because you have no ammo left to build the team to the caliber they need to be successful. In effect, you end up wasting those picks, time and again.

Yep & in the process you make the team that much more attractive so that you have an opportunity to obtain a vet QB (although these cases are rare) like what Denver did with Manning. Look at the Chiefs and the Bills - you can't tell me that either of these teams doesn't at least have a shot of making a SB run. Even if they don't come close I would kill to have the Redskins in the current position of either of those teams.

Sure I can. If the Bills make the Super Bowl I will put a pick of my dick as an avatar. No wait, box is too small.

Back to GMSM I am a fan, to be honest he looks to be our only hope. I'm just jaded and so done with losing nobody is spared. Even the guy who just arrived.

But IMO thats much less likely to work. Also you can still build a team after taking a QB in the first. Its just one pick. And if hes good than he has far more impact than any other player. You can waste picks on any position its not some QB only thing.

I think the problem with this discussion is that some people think that

1. First round QBs will bust here because they always have.
2. Any other position drafted will succeed and build our team.
3. If you build the rest of the team its easy to find a QB later.
4. If you draft a QB you cant still build the rest of the team.

All of these are false.

If you draft a franchise QB you have the most important part of a successful team in place.

Who thinks that way? I haven't seen one person post any of these points.

Your last sentence is the most important. How many Franchise QBs are there in the league right now?

That definitely seems to me what you and shark are saying. If not then my bad. But also if not then why not draft a QB in the 1st? (keeping in mind there would have to be one there worthy of the pick)

No. You have missed the point completely. I'm sure I speak for shark when I say we would love to have a frachise QB.

So do you support drafting a QB in the 1st round this year, if there is QB there that isnt a reach when we pick?

I mean more of from a team building process than specifically with the college QBs right now. Im not asking you to evaluate them.

You think Eli, rivers, cam, Ryan, Wilson and flacco are franchise QBs? Then we can stop the discussion right there.

Why does it matter that i think that? Why would we stop the discussion there? Would you not want them as your QB? Franchise QB is not synonymous with Elite QB IMO.

If we have another top 5 pick, no. There isn't a QB that is worthy. The potential to bust is too high. Leverage the pick for additional high picks and try and find a Wilson or brees later in the draft. Also gives you resources to draft the top safety, or center, etc.

Because we disagree on the basic premise.

We disagree on what defines a franchise QB. Doesnt mean we cant discuss how to build a team. Ignore the franchise QB thing and read it as I want us to draft a QB at the level of the players I drafted.

The definition of who is a franchise QB is fundamental to my position. I believe there are only 5-7 franchise QBs , guys that carry the team. They only come around in the draft every 3 years or so. The problem is that every draft QB hysteria builds and inflates the true value of QBs, labeling lesser QBs as a franchise QB when at best they turn into game managers. Desperate teams (us, cle, etc) get caught up in that hysteria and we end up wasting those picks. Thus we have a dearth of home grown talent and little depth. Kinda like wher we have been the last 15 years. Teams like Seattle, Baltimore do it thE other way. The build the team first and can then plug in a non franchise guy and have success.

Well obviously we disagree with what qualifies as a franchise qb. That said I think we can agree we'd like to have QB as good as say Philip rivers. And I don't think you can get a qb like him by just filling in any guy after building a good team.

So why hasn't Phillip rivers ever won anything if he is so good?

I am in agreement with a lot of your pts so don't take this the wrong way. Several of the teams mentioned above acquired their QB high in the first round. However - among that group there is one taken in 3rd rd, one in 6th, one undrafted & 2 selected as FAs after being discarded by their previous teams. Certainly the odds are w/obtaining a good QB early in the draft but this shows that is not the only method (& the high pick route has certainly not worked well for the Redskins over time).

There is no right or wrong answer on this one. We just have to have faith the current FO will do the right thing (for the most part) over the next several years. I am very confident that they are looking ahead and considering any number of options down the road to include the possibly of all current QBs not being on the roster in the next year or two.
