You can still hit hard though, just don't head hunt ... The game can still be played physically... I think the biggest BS thing is the league calling no contact so much, that is not a safety issue its a WE WANT more offense issue.. AS far as concussions though, I think the NFL can still be played as physical as ever as long as defenders just hit to the body and not the head....

I have a question for all. At what age did you realize Tackle Football could be dangerous?

I think I was about 7 maybe 8 back in the early 70's. Those claiming they had no idea are full of it.
This should apply to the NFL itself, no?

Well it apparently didn't register for the NFL front office until they started losing billion dollar lawsuits.

Or they weren't overly concerned that GROWN MEN, we're willing to play no questions asked.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about because there were a lot of questions and the answers were lies.

I don't understand why this is still a discussion. What the NFL did was disgraceful and they're paying the price for it right now. Why do you have such a problem with the settlements? You don't like class action lawsuits in general? You think it's cool for bosses telling you something is safe when it isn't? You think it's the employees responsibility to sniff out the lies they're being told? I don't get it.

OK I guess at 7 I was just smarter than 22 year old college students. I knew it was dangerous then, by 15 I knew it could effect my life. Look at Ali and plenty of other boxers who were called punch drunk years later due to to, you guessed it, concussions.

Now where I do agree with the players is they need better health insurance for life, and better retirement money.

Wow, you had some type of neuroscience degree by 7? That's amazing! Guys were getting banged up and team doctors were clearing them. The NFL put out a pamphlet stating that getting one concussion didn't make you more prone to get another and a bunch of other garbage. They were passing lies off as medical facts.

Then why lie about? They made a concerted effort to supress scientific findings that not only could have helped football players with brain injuries but the rest of the world because they were counter to their agenda. This is the saddest part IMO, not the damage to players, but to some 4 year old kid with brain damage who could have received the best possible, most knowledgable treatment, but didnt because the MTBIC wasn't spending a decade blocking any scientific results that they didn't want published.

If the NFL had just said, "it's dangerous, play at your own risk", then it wouldn't be the issue it is today. But they didnt. It was "lie, deny, lie again, deny some more". Sort of like Brady and deflategate. Except this time, a lot of people were affected, and perhaps lives were damaged that could have been helped had the MTBIC had some kind of ethical standard.

No at 7 I knew you could be easily injured playing tackle football, by my mid teens I knew concussions could cause long term effects. There are studies older than the NFL showing the effects of concussions. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to know the dangers they faced playing this game.

And what exactly did you base your conclusion on? You knew in the 70's the extent of neurological damage a person could expect from playing football into their 30's? The NFL had their own puppet doctors that were claiming the contrary and messaged their "findings" to the players and team physicians. The doctors job is to provide the best medical advice to their patients and the NFL made sure that wouldn't happen. I'm sorry this isn't in line with your concept of personal responsibility but that isn't how it's supposed to work.

There are many industries that operated under dangerous conditions that many workers had no idea of the health issues they faced. I can't see how any football player can claim he had no clue.

But you can see how the mtbic can claim they had no clue?

Most people of the time weren't as well versed on neuroscience as you were back in the 1970s when you were 7. Common thought was that concussions were a short term injury. NFL made sure this was the common thought went on well into the 2000's even tho research was suggesting otherwise during the 1990s.

I agree and I dont think the NFL and it's DR's knew 1/4 about what they do today about concussions, just like how much medicine has advanced in 40 years. I'm sure a lot more people died back then and would have lived with the same procedure, because of improvements. I watched NFL in 70's and had no clue what concussions were and knew it was a dangerous sport. Now when I see the results with players 20 -30 years later like a Junior Seau ,Marshall and a Dorsett that I know it's serious business. I always knew boxing was dangerous, and some guys get lucky and a have a healthy life , and some are punch drunk, Worse like Gerald MCClellan but 1 unfortunate shot by Nigel Ben, and even worse like that Korean Boxer that died during fight. When I played ball in HS ,we or the coaches didnt talk or know what they knew today, we wanted to play like the Jack Lamberts or Bednariks. Big risk, big, big rewards

They for sure knew about it during the 1990s however. That's when they started covering things up.

I concur since the 90's with the NFL lieing but I would think that men would know that with a contact sport that there is a high risk. I would wager that even if they told them the truth since the 90's that 95% would still sign a waiver and play

Never realized how far the NFL went to cover up concussions until I saw this documentary,

League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis | FRONTLINE | PBS

Reminds me of the stories you hear about tobacco companies covering up the harms of smoking.

If you ask me, the NFL deserves to be sued for this.

I agree, Doob, but I love NFL football so much that I am prepared to turn a blind eye. Sick? Yeah, but it's easier to live with than life without the NFL.
