the #1 off-season activity needs to be a total rebuild of the pen

You can certainly make a strong case for this. But part of the problem is, and this would be true even with a stout/established pen, you can't keep asking them to go 3 1/2 to 4 innings and expect not to get hammered.

Hasn't he pitched about as many innings already this year as he did last?

We're gonna have to end up sending him down just to get him so rest. That or put him on the DL.

Thrown 42 so far, threw 49 last year

Not as bad as I thought, but certainly not good. I'm thinking we were hoping to get maybe 60 innings or so outta him this season. That sound reasonable?

He looks tired to me, and who can blame him?

I'm the biggest proponent on this site re: keep the lines of communication open, all options are on the table (meaning, everyone & anyone is available), and let's see what happens.

Either side can stop the conversation/negotiations at any given moment. No big deal. Not listening though is a very big one, at least to me.

If the price is too high, shake hands and walk away. No problem.

What do you guys think of the recent ESPN report saying that the Rangers and Dodgers are the favorites to trade for Hamels? Initially, I was against it. I've changed my thinking tho, the team would have Hamels for a few seasons after this one, having Hamels would make Darvish more likely to stay with the team, and being totally honest? The Rangers are playing for next year. They know the team is still pretty banged up. On a side note, I'm sick of competing with the Dodgers for pitchers. You just know they will make a run at Darvish when he is a free agent and those bastards got Greinke when we tried to sign him. If Philadelphia is smart, they will send Hamels here if the offers between the Rangers and Dodgers are comparable. Philly should send him to the AL, so they wouldn't have to face him.
To me it would cost too much in budget space and in prospects for a pitcher who has had a NL ERA of 3.60 or above 2 of the past 3 seasons.

A lot of folks sure seem to be hell-bent on ignoring little facts like this.

Good info.

I'm not a proponent. Too many needs and I like our rotation going in 2016. Spend mpney where it will do the most good.

Besides Cole Hamels.. Rangers engaged with Padres on Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross.... Cashner more likely to be dealt....Padres need SS

Ross yes, Cashner....not really.

Cashner is not bad but I think he is a FA after next year. Not sure when Ross is a FA.

I honestly have mixed emotions about it all, in spite of all the pertinent info from Bennie.

But I will admit, I'm not at all sure what our 2016 rotation is going to look like. Sure, if Darvish is 100% healthy and pitching like the 2013/14 Darvish, that's a wonderful start. But we don't know.

We also don't know what we'll get from Holland, if anything. Perez & Harrison, the jury is out, and will stay out for an indefinite period of time. Can Lewis hang on for another season and pick up the # 5 slot? And unless Chi-Chi and/or Martinez comes up with a true out pitch, or at least another pitch for their arsenal, I don't know what to expect from those two. Will Tepsch ever turn into something or recover from his arm problems? Is Thompson ready to assume a key role?

Just wondering......not trying to be pessimistic.

Both of these guys are arbitration eligible next season, FA in 17. But combined, they're making over $9 mil now.

Went to Chicago this weekend and caught a game Friday, just missed going to see Hamels' no-hitter Saturday

But that being said, we caught batting practice Friday and Hamels was shagging fly balls in RCF and was one of 2 players all of batting practice to toss HRs that bounced back onto the field back to the kids, and he did it repeatedly, so I saw Saturday as a little bit of karma for him, seems like a solid dude

Just figured I would share that, since Hamels is a frequent discussion topic here

That is how I feel as well. One reason is because Hamels is a gamble himself. Almost all pitchers are and especially once they get into their 30s. He has thrown a lot of innings in his career already and he is owed a ton of money for a long time. The Choo contract is already money down the drain and both Harrison and Andrus are currently well overpaid. Prince will be as well maybe as early as 2018. Having another contract the size of Hamels' that goes bad can put us in almost as bad of shape financially as we were in during the last few years of Hicks.

Feliz did better last night than his previous relief appearance when he gave up the 5 runs in 1 inning. Last night it was just 3 runs in 1 inning.
