Wow that is a pretty darn bold move there. If I were the Cowboys honestly I would test him to see if he can hold to that.

I absolutely would too. Call his bluff. Have coaches and players come out saying they have a plan in place and prepared to move forward. The Cowboys can absolutely win this standoff.

Hopefully Dallas loses a few early games with no running game and no Dez.

But...I fully expect Dez to sign his tender eventually and play this season. He has no leverage.

Thing about Dez is, he really doesn't want to be traded or play elsewhere. He is from Texas, and is kind of dumb, so it took him several years just to learn the Cowboys offense. He doesn't want to go somewhere else and do that over again.

Yeah that is the big question...Does this just mean he will miss training camp and maybe show back up a week or two before the season starts or does this actually mean he is willing to sit out games? Again this is why I would be willing to call his bluff. The teams still have most of the power when it comes to the FT being used. Throw in then Bryant losing the fan support very quickly. Nothing quite like having fan after fan rip you apart for being selfish.

Yeah I don't read his tweet to mean he won't miss the season....he just wont be there for camp.

No way he sits out the season.

He'd miss $750,000 per game. Ain't no way he holds out the regular season.

IMO you will see the NFL make another power grab in terms of the FT this coming CBA just because of guys like Dez threatening to hold out and of course the whole JPP situation.

Which again shows the team has all the power in the situation. A player would be missing some major money trying to make a point that would be lost on most. Like I said the fans would quickly turn on the player as he would be viewed as selfish for his actions. Other teams then would cross him off as a diva making his market shrink all the more. He would also be losing out on some of the long-term money as play on the field is what speaks to teams. You don't play on the field it is hard for teams to want to give out the big bucks.

What do you think they will try to get more than what they already have?

Based on what he has already said, I can see him hold out for a few games in the regular season. That might really scare Jerrah and company, though I don't think they would cave here like they did with Emmitt back in the day after he missed regular season games and they lost.

It doesn't do him any good though is the issue. They can't add any money to this year so he would essentially be playing on the contract of the FT of $12.8 million. I don't think they can even sign him to a long-term deal once July 15th comes because of the signing bonus as they cannot add money to this year but a team has to pay the signing bonus as soon as the contract is signed. So no matter what if nothing is signed by July 15th Bryant has to play on the FT salary and wait till next off season to sign the contract.

If there's no deal by the 15th, sitting out games only hurts Dez in the pocketbook.

Same fines for missing camp as a normal contract or prorating the FT value depending on when it was signed to avoid camp hold outs from guys under the tag. For instance the player only earns 90% of the tag value if they don't sign the tag before July 30th. 75% if they sign after first cut down day. And so on.

Holdouts are only good for set of people in the NFL: agents. That is why the NFL took that away on rookie deals and contracts already in place. It hurts the players, it hurts the team and it hurts the fans. They'll take it away again from players under the FT in the future if too many agents start using the FT as a holdout mechanism.

Football player aren't paid to play games (despite the fact that they get a "game" check). They are played to practice to be the best they can possibly be. Holding out on the FT takes away a huge chunk of practice time which is what they really are getting paid for. I don't know if the NFLPA would allow it to get passed....but I guarantee you it will be argued for in the next CBA which means the NFLPA either has to give the owners this or they have to give them something else.

That makes sense actually. I could see them fighting for that as the FT is used on the top tier players that actually hurt a team not being on the team. Either that or the kicker. So it definitely hurts the game both for the fans and for the team to not have that player available for training camp and pre season. Although I do think the NFL owners should feel pretty fortunate with what they have had with these CBA's as they have made out really well in these negotiations. Since NFL careers are so short holding out one year really hurts the players ability to make as much as possible.

sure...a wide receiver becomes the downfall of the cowboys.
Talking about putting a financial strain on the team taking away $ from your o-line, which is the biggest reason Dallas is on the right track.

but then again....you assume. Dallas looks poised to pay Dez 12.8M this season while adding talent to an already pretty good team. The franchise left tackle is signed for 10 years and the center is entering his 3rd season and the guard his second. Dallas looks to be in fine shape

So the Cowboys are basically just trying to get a year of Dez for under $13 million before having to lock him up to a long-term deal at more money? That makes sense.

Still, though, Dez could conceivably force them to give him the longer deal now, even if they don't pay him any more in his first year than that. That seems to be what he is after here.
