The Houston Rockets have agreed to trade defensive specialist center Omer Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans in a deal aimed at clearing salary-cap space to chase LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony in free agency, sources told ESPN.com.

In exchange for Asik, the Rockets will receive the Pelicans' 2015 first-round draft pick. The Rockets also will include $1.5 million in cash as part of the deal.

This maneuver by the Rockets also sets up the team to trade point guard Jeremy Lin, which would open up enough cap space for the Rockets to make a run at James and Anthony.

Asik is going into the last year of a three-year contract where he will earn $15 million as part of a balloon salary Houston gave him in a complex deal in 2011.

I think this pushes my bulls aside for the landing spot of Melo. I think Houston will land LBJ or Melo or both now. Just funny how teams can make these trades to get rid of salary but bulls cant find someone to take on Boozer and his expiring deal who is better then Asik. Crazy stuff.

Houston is set up great right now.

They will have just four players and no bench.

It will be a new trend.

They might land Melo, but they are not landing LBJ

Harden n Melo can't be on the same team... at least with D12 he plays in a different position n actually contributes outside of scoring...

Harden doesn't .... Melo can rebound but with D12 its not a bonus

That is why they will trade Harden for LeBron.

I am not sure what the Pelicans are doing. Do they want Asik's aspiring contract, or do they actually think they are going to be good?

Asik is OK, but those ball-hogging guards need to get split up so that Anthony Davis can really shine.

I wonder what it feels like for a professional athlete to hear the words "You've just been traded. To the Pelicans."

LOL on the surface it has to sound like a joke. However when you think about it new orleans is a nice town and that team a=has some good young talent. Anthony Davis is a top 5 player imo.

I don't think Houston lands any of the FAs.

Not unless they plan on trading Harden and Parsons as well. And WHO wants Lin at his current contract? Who's going to take that deal?

Anthony Davis is real and up and coming. The rest of the team is being constructed by a mad man.

The could have tanked last year, gotten a top 3 or 4 pick and maybe gotten a chance to pair Anthony Davis with a guy like Exum or Wiggins and then gotten Noel back for this year. They wouldve had the top prospect from last years draft, a top 5 guy from this good draft and Davis.

Also this trade is much worse than the Tyson Chandler trade. Not sure what NO is doing

They are building to make the playoffs, not to build a contender. Thing is, I am not even sure they will make the playoffs this year.

Anthony Davis is a championship cornerstone, but the pieces around him are awful.

I agree that Exum, Noel and Davis would be a sick young core. I am not sure that one could construct a less complementary roster full of highly paid players around a budding superstar.

Asik is a top defensive center who can rebound. Him and davis make up maybe the best defensive front court in the NBA. Jrue holliday is a decent pg and I really liked what I saw from rivers at the end of last year. He will be a player.

Maybe in the Bulls system. The Rockets had no answer for Lamarcus Aldridge. I would say that Asik is really a 'decent' backup defensive center who can rebound.

Well asking asik to D up a top power forward is a bit unfair. He does as good of a job as any on most centers tho. When he played for the bulls he used to slow down howard like none other with NO help.

I think with trading Chandler, the Knicks are now in position to conduct S&Ts. Potentially they could S&T Melo for Harden and then sign Lebron.

New Orleans is a massive, festering garbage dump that smells like piss.
