Somerville mayor: No more 'villainizing' undocument immigrants | Boston Herald

Starting tomorrow, it’s no longer illegal to be illegal in Somerville, according to Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, who is slated to sign an executive order Thursday barring his cops from holding undocumented aliens in jail simply for immigration violations — an unprecedented move, even in the Bay State, though other communities may quickly follow suit.

“We need to stop villainizing these people and start solving the problem,” Curtatone told the Herald yesterday. “Massachusetts holds itself out as a progressive state. We should lead the way. We hold ourselves out as a progressive community that believes in fairness and doing the right thing. This is morally the right thing to do.”

Somerville — which made national headlines in 2012 for banning the word “illegal” in reference to illegal immigrants — would be the first community in Massachusetts to join the so-called Trust Act movement, a national push to relax immigration enforcement.

Police would only comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers to hold illegals if they had a criminal warrant or if police had a non-immigration-related legal purpose, Curtatone plans to announce today at a press conference.

Forgive me, but just because an issue is massive and difficult, it does not mean the best thing to do is just give up the fight.

Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront exited last night’s start against the Blue Jays in the fifth inning with what the team called shoulder fatigue and afterward he told reporters: “I couldn’t feel my shoulder. It was weird. I felt weird.”
Scary.
In addition to the numbness, Doubront’s velocity also dipped during the game as he struggled to grip the ball and repeat his throwing motion. He’s scheduled to undergo an MRI exam today and seemed genuinely worried about the situation.
Prior to last night’s struggles Doubront had allowed just one run in back-to-back starts and posted a 3.48 ERA in his last six starts dating back to mid-April. But it’s awfully hard to pitch if you can’t feel your arm.

Mets right-hander Matt Harvey spoke to Tom Verducci of the Sports Illustrated about his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery and said he wanted to return to the majors in August to make 5-7 starts down the stretch, but general manager Sandy Alderson quickly made it clear that the team isn’t going to let that happen.
August would be just 10 months after the surgery and the typically recovery timetable is 12-18 months, which is why Alderson said this to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:
Not being a medical doctor and not really faced with that decision previously, I’ll reserve judgment. But the one thing we don’t want to do is be put in a situation where someone–Matt, or anyone else–has a setback because we’ve pushed the natural recovery processes further than we should have.

and they think that Drew is the answer. LMAO!

They might need another starter. I've kinda given up on Doubront. Buchholz will do better, though his peripherals aren't very good (and the K/9 is down from last year (7.98, 7.02 this year)). Peavy is struggling with his command. I wouldn't be surprised if either of them were hurt. Buchholz velocity hasn't been the same since he hit the DL last year.

I should try to contribute more sports-related material to the thread.

Gallardo day to day with a sprained ankle.

I say dump Wang Chung and bring up Jimmy Nelson from Nashville. He couldn't do much worse.

Sergio Romo blew it last night. 1 strike away from a W and he couldn't make it happen. He is so not my favorite.
Oh, and BigD- I tried drunk posting last night, but the vodka gods must've been smiling on me because I don't see any evidence of it this morning. (sidebar- do you know that Trader Joe's vodka is called Vodka of the Gods? Funny shit!)

Was up until 2:30 or so watching the new episode of Fargo. Best show on TV right now. Last night's episode was fantastic.
