Nope. It isn't over, as long as they are good throwers. The read option will see its demise now that defense can hit the QB if he hands it off, that will make teams not want to run the play as their QB is taking too many hits. I didn't watch the full game last night, but Kaepernick did a read option play and handed it off and was destroyed on the play. Defenses will use this as a free hit on the QB time.

Same thing happened to Wilson. Collinsworth said that the league is kind of struggling with rules about how defenders can legally defend the read option. I won't be surprised if restrictions are placed on how to defend it.

Chip Kelly's O is already getting slowed down

It was not always fluid. There were dropped balls and silly penalties.

BUt, it seems a bit of a stretch to say "slowed down".

The Eagles did put up 550 yards and scored 30 points in only 19 minutes of possession.

They scored at will when they actually had the ball....which was rarely...

Their problems are from a bad defense. The Chargers simply never stopped getting long drives.

San Diego played "keep-a-way" with long 12 play drives that ate up the clock for 41 minutes.

None of these quarterbacks you're talking about are run first QBs. Kaepernick and Boldin shredded the Packers D. Vick just threw for over 400. Wilson consistently throws for 300 and rushes for 60+. Rodgers has slowed down a bit, but his first few seasons starting, he ran pretty frequently. Hell, the Super Bowl season he was second only to Vick in rushing yardage, and rushed for a few big TDs in the post season.

They need to allow defenders to hit the QB, because on those plays hes basically a RB anyways.

Hmmm I seem to remember a guy named Steve Young that had a pretty good career even though he came into the league known as a running quarterback.

Agree, especially in Tampa, and the USFL...but he means the read option guys.

Agree...if your offense is designed for you to run as the QB...the DEF should be able to treat you like a runner on every play.

In the NFL, for a QB, it has to be arm first, feet second.

This is not new news. It's a constant, like I illustrated in my first post. Are any of today's run-first QB's better than Vick in his prime? I'd say no. I repeat, the next scrambling QB who wins a SB will be the first.

Aaron Rogers is obviously not a scrambling QB like a Vick, Kaep, RG3 etc...who I'm clearly discussing here. He is a pocket passing QB who throws first and uses his feet as a complimentary weapon (much like Steve Young was). Russell Wilson is imo more like Rogers and Young than he like RG3 and Vick.

Apples to oranges comparing elite passers like Rogers to fad QB's like Kaepernick and RG3.
There are no "run first" QB's in the NFL. If there were, then you wouldn't last long as a Head Coach or OC.

So, if someone with Peyton Mannings passing ability could run like Vick, Manziel or Kaepernick he wouldn't be able to win a super bowl either?

If he can throw like Peyton, he doesn't have to run.

The premise for this whole topic is ridiculous. First off you need to establish what you mean by scrambling quarterback because there have always been some great scrambling quarterbacks that have won Superbowls. Heck Ben Roethlisberger has the word Scrambling thrown out all the time with the way he plays yet he has won 2 Superbowls. Steve Young was actually known as a run-first quarterback when he first came into the league but developed his passing ability more and more so that he relied less on his feet.

Again though are you just talking about these Read-Option quarterbacks that are now coming into the league or throughout NFL history those quarterbacks that have used their legs to make plays because then you could include guys like John Elway, Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, and many others. IF you are just talking Read-Option quarterbacks then in reality we do not have a large enough sample size to see how these guys will do. It seems that coaches now adays with the speed of the defense like a quarterback that can use his legs at least to buy some time in the pocket and even every once in a while run for a first down. Just look at last night with Russell Wilson and how he bought time with his legs yet he does run some Read-Option. For the most part they do not ask him to do this very often just enough to keep the defense honest that it could happen and have to waste time during the week preparing for it to maybe be run 1-5 times in a game. For the most part he is a pocket passer though and a good one at that.

Never really worked for Vick. RG3 is done. Kaepernick has jumped the shark. Harbaugh will be back coaching in the NCAA within 2 years. Chip Kelly's O is already getting slowed down. This shit (yes, shit) won't work in the NFL where everyone is fast.

The next scrambling QB who wins a SB will be the first. Don't hold your breath.

Are you crazy? The ones who change the rules are the owners and few - if any - are going to change rules that will result in more QBs being hurt which could lead to a less $$ for the league. Think again.

If they change the rule that you cannot hit the quarterback on a read-option play then in my opinion that would be ridiculous. They have turned themselves into a possible ball carrier and the defense has the right to try and hit the guy with the ball in his hands and the guy that is faking like he does. IF they change it where you can't hit the quarterback during a Read-Option play then they need to change the rule that you can't hit the running back during a play-action play because it is basically the same thing.

The best part about the original post was stating that "Kaep has jumped the shark" & Harbaugh will return to college in two years (probably still bitter about Harbough from a few years ago when the Lions coach made an ass out of himself).

Hmm - let's see - Kaep was within one play of winning the SB & last week played one of the best games ever. He subsequently goes to the most hostile stadium in the NFL against a very good team & falls short. So now he & the team are failures? LOL. You are clueless (same thing with the Kelly comment which was totally inaccurate).

It depends on specifically what the QB is doing at the time. If he is running forward like in an option then yes he is fair game. If he is moving backwards like a standard QB then no. Anyhow - I am referring to what rules are changed. Any rules currently in effect are simply the subject of interpretation by the refs. However - there is no way they will change any rule that will put the QB more at risk - you have seen this with other rules even to the point where it appears to look silly.

Anyhow - this is totally overstated - teams don't use the Read Option that often & all of these guys also operate from standard offenses & do quite well in the process. There is more good QB play at this time then in quite a while & it is laughable to write off any of these guys based on a few games.
