Time to do away with the draft lottery?

Bettman keeps talking about league-wide parity and coaches/GMs continually mention that the margin between winning and losing is razor thin. If that truly is the case, then why do we still have a draft lottery? I say all 14 non-playoff teams should have an equal shot at getting the No. 1 overall pick or should be able to move up any number of places in draft position.

If teams don't like the approach, here's a suggestion: Fire your GM and get somebody in there who can damn well get the job done.

Yes, that's true, but it is still weighted to favour the teams that finish lower in the standings. What I am proposing is an equal chance for all non-playoff teams at No. 1.

I think if the lottery comes out 14th team gets 1st pick, 13th team gets 2nd pick & 12th team gets 3rd pick that's how it should be. This only dropping 1 spot crap sucks.

My team hasn't made the playoffs since 2007. They've picked in the bottom 5 every year since then. However, they only had 1 first overall pick & of the players selected since 2008 with these picks only 2 are on the current roster, Tavares & Bailey. Nino & Strome aren't even on the team yet.:

The bottom line is teams like Edmonton have been run into the ground. If your GM knows what he's doing your team should improve. If Garth Snow can put a quality team on the ice while spending less money in terms of actual dollars to the cap floor, other teams should be able to do just as well if not better.

I suppose fans have the choice of not going to the game, but the reality is that both teams realize that losing tonight's game is more beneficial to their team's fortunes down the road.

That's why they should give each of the bottom 14 teams an equal chance at winning the lottery dash. If it's obvious to fans that teams are tanking, the media & league should be able to figure it out easily as well.

Carolina better suit up all their top players & play hard tonight against the Isles. They're at home & the game is just as important to Washington, Winnipeg, NYR & Ottawa as it is to the Islanders.

I think there's a big difference between tanking on purpose and putting in some AHL caliber guys to get a good look at them.

Personally, I've got no issue with a team that's eliminated from contention getting a head start on next year by getting a good look at some of their future players.

I guess that's separate from the draft lottery debate though.

i think they should just pick a ping pong ball for every spot.. go with like 14 balls for the last place team, 13 for 2nd to last.. 1 for the best team to not make the playoffs.. anyone can move anywhere

doesn't have to be that bad of odds for the 'best' non-playoff team, but i like the idea of anyone missing the playoffs being able to draft anywhere in the top 14

At least tonight's game will have no impact on the playoff race (as both Nashville and Calgary have been eliminated). I can't imagine other teams would be very happy with the Flames lineup tonight if Nashville were battling with Detroit, Columbus, and Dallas for a playoff spot.

The integrity of the game (i.e. icing the best possible lineup barring injury) should be more important than draft lottery positioning, in my opinion.

Yeah, I've heard of that idea and I think it deserves a close look at by the league. That along with top 3 picks over the last three years determines how many balls each of the 14 non-playoff teams get in the hopper.

2013 NHL Draft Lottery and NHL Draft information - 2013 NHL Draft

The 2013 NHL Draft Lottery, to be held this year on Monday, April 29, will be the first in NHL history where all 14 clubs not qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or the clubs that have acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff clubs, will have a chance at winning the right to the first overall selection. Under the previous lottery system, only the five teams with the fewest points in the standings had the opportunity to win the first overall selection as rules dictated no team could move up more than four spots.

The NHL Draft Lottery is a weighted system to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2013 NHL Draft. Teams finishing with the fewest points during the regular season possess the greatest chance of winning the right to the first pick in the NHL Draft. Fourteen balls, numbered 1 to 14, are placed in a lottery machine. The machine expels four balls, forming a series of numbers. The four-digit series resulting from the expulsion of the balls is matched against a probability chart that divides the possible combinations among the 14 participating clubs.

While the top pick can now go to any of the 14 non-playoff clubs, or the team owning the rights to the first pick of a non-playoff club, the odds of winning the lottery are unchanged from previous years. The teams in the drawing are ranked in inverse order of their regular season point totals, with team one being the club with the fewest points, and team 14 being the club with the most points among those outside of the playoffs.

The likelihood of each team gaining the right to the first pick is as follows:

Team 1 25.0%

Team 2 18.8%

Team 3 14.2%

Team 4 10.7%

Team 5 8.1%

Team 6 6.2%

Team 7 4.7%

Team 8 3.6%

Team 9 2.7%

Team 10 2.1%

Team 11 1.5%

No club will move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Lottery. The remaining first round drafting positions are determined by the results of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It needed all new brake lines and tranny coolant lines here's what also pisses me off. It cost $34 to take a cab from downtown to the airport area that's eight miles ! Damn, I should have been a cab driver. Fuck me !!
