Barry Bonds had similar tools to Ken Griffey Jr. before he roided up - Great hitter (both average and power), plenty of speed, great defense in the outfield etc.

I can't remember the year, but it was probably in that otherworldly 2001-4 stretch he had, but one year Bonds had a .485 OBP in two-strike counts. That's absurd. In the worst possible situation for a hitter, Bonds got on base more often than anyone else in any count.

Steroids, whatever, personality, whatever, Bonds was so much better a hitter than anyone else in the game for so many years that he should be in the Hall regardless. I mean, my God, in 2002 he hit .370. In 2004, his OBP was .609(!). And he was known for his power. That's unbelievable hitting ability. The control of the strike zone coupled with the ability to hit one out of the park at any time, that's basically impossible to pitch to.

I hate voters that have petty or silly reasons to justify their votes. Having said that, personally I wouldn't vote for Jack Morris because he had a mustache.

Maybe he should have done the handlebar like Rollie Fingers, comeds :noidea:

Barry Bonds is the argument for why they should let steroids/PEDs in baseball. Look at the level of play you get when the best of the best are given a boost. I know it may not be the most popular of opinions but I loved the "steroid" era.

The steroids helped him with the home runs, but having a career BB% almost double his K% and his raw contact skill had nothing to do with steroids. Take away half of his home runs, and he's still one of the best hitters ever.

But your point is well taken. The long ball is exciting.

While we're talking about baseball, I would like to call everyone's attention to the most unlikely slash line of all time, posted by Jack Crooks of the St. Louis Browns in 1892, the man to achieve the lowest batting average of any hitter to ever reach a .400 OBP mark.

.213/.400/.294

When that man took a cut, not much happened, but his plate discipline was clearly amazing. He did post a career-high 7 HR that year, though.

No doubt, in fact I believe that was always McGwire's fallback when talking about it. Steroids help you in certain aspects but you still need to be able to hit the ball.

kinda hilarious (not really) that Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez both said Edgar Martinez was the toughest hitter they faced in their respective careers and hes got zero chance at getting into the hall :ohwell:

Also a shame and another reason the hall is a joke.

Ah, yeah, forgot to list Edgar on my list of players who should be in.

Curt Schilling doesn't believe in evolution, but he apparently believes this: Some Hall of Fame voters didn't put a checkmark next to his name because he's an outspoken Republican.

Well, that's certainly one theory, Curt, isn't it?

There's a legitimate reason to wonder why Schilling didn't get anywhere near the support from voters that John Smoltz did. Their numbers aren't that different, except for Smoltz's save total.

Smoltz was elected on his first ballot, earning 82.9 percent of the vote. Schilling, meanwhile, got 39.2 percent on his third ballot. The JAWS Hall of Fame evaluation method, however, says Schilling is better than Smoltz, 64.5 vs. 54.2 on the JAWS scale.

Not because he's an outspoken Republican, but because he's kind of a jerk and an idiot.

But the real point is that Schilling was probably a better pitcher than Smoltz, and the Hall of Fame is first and foremost about baseball performance, so Schilling's gripe is legitimate.

I'm a transplant, so I have no skin in the game. I do want the Buckeyes to win because the office will be angry next week if they don't. Other than that, it makes me no never mind.

Oregon winning would be better for Arizona next year....

But then again, I don't care about football, so, I don't know, go sports team!
