when has Sam Darnold ever looked like a top 20 qb

come on bruh

completely ignoring the obvious running mismatch Fields still averages more yards per attempt, yards per catch, td pct, passer rating and completion pct.

I'd love for Cleveland to have him for 3.4 million as a backup in a vacuum and so would many teams but his presence would be somewhat distracting. Also the whole big payday for year 5 is problematic.

He will be starting somewhere next year or he will be the Jets backup or something similar. Bookmark this if you like.
The hate is absolutely unreal.

He is playing so much better than Dobbs but Dobbs is a big story this season.

SMH.

I get Dobbs being a nice story because he came out of nowhere to lift Minny to some big wins. But he's a guy who been around the league for 6 years and never been tabbed to do much of anything. And we saw why Monday.

Yep. But, Minny has a pretty good defense so Dobbs isn't the only reason they have won some games.

And Fields is playing a lot better than him.

I would MUCH rather have Fields as the Hawks starter than Geno, and I'd wager we'd have a better record (certainly not a worse record) if we did.

Geno was one I thought on but I'd also point to Geno as an example who bloomed very late. Fields is 24 years old.

As I've pointed out at nauseum though Fields absolutely has to develop as a passer because he won't be an elite athlete his whole career. Or he will be like Cam and out of the league at 30 31

Dobbs was a story because he literally had not taken a single practice snap with the team and all of a sudden was under center in that Atlanta game and he played at Fields' level for a stretch.

A level that isnt that good. A level so low in fact that a guy that a team snagged a player for a 6th-7th round draft swap and hadnt actually put on pads and practiced with the team was at.

If you think you are helping Fields' cause by comparing him to Dobbs......you aren't. Dobbs was a story because of the oddity of his situation. The fact that a journeyman backup with no practice time with his team could basically look comparable to Fields isnt the flex you think it is.

The teams with the most playing talent.

I don't think the Eagles or 49ers would want him, I'm not sure even they could win consistently with him or that he's good enough to beat out their current back-up.

Again, my preferred destination would be the Falcons. Elite RB/WR/TE already in place, but underutilized due to awful QB options on the roster.

Falcons do seem like a good fit, but @rmilia1 may suffer a heart attack if that happens.

Eh, I think Cousins fits much better in Atlanta than Fields. I could see Fields land somewhere to be a backup next year.

Well sure, Cousins a better QB and Falcons really need some kind of upgrade at QB and despite what @rmilia1 says Fields would be a upgrade over Ridder.

Yes, Fields would be an upgrade over a few bottom 5 QBs. Imo, Fields's best fit is as a backup QB and that is where I think he ends up next season.

Darnold looked like a below average starter most of the time. The issue was that he would frequently do something inexplicably bad. He'd completely misread a situation and throw to a defender marking space or he'd stand there frozen and eventually concede a sack fumble. Fields on the other hand is a pure athlete with accuracy problems. Even when he hits targets the ball placement is poor and this kills the opportunity for yards after the catch. Darnold will have 4 INT games and 0 turnover games. You can win the 0 turnover games with Darnold, maybe a streak of games, but overall you'll have a losing season. It's hard to win even the 0 turnover games with Fields.

It's hard to see any team signing Fields to a Jordan Love type of contract. Any team acquiring Fields knows it's a back-up salary 1 year rental with FA market forces to follow. The upside to Fields is that he could potentially play like a $10M QB on a $3M contract, (a lesser Geno Smith), but even that doesn't really get you anywhere. I don't see Fields being more than an after thought after 2024.

I don't disagree, but with the RB/WR/TE options already in place I don't see why the Falcons would set their sights so low on a QB.

If they make the playoffs ( looks like that could happen) they won't have the good draft position and they are middle of the pack in cap space, so their options would be limited IMO.

I don't deny that Fields could stand a couple of seasons riding pine to learn the nuances of the position, but if our GM is smart, there's no way he should trade Fields to a team only looking for a backup. He'd be lucky to snag a 4th rounder for him. If Fields is to be traded, then he should be sent to a team looking for a starter. That would likely fetch no worse than a 3rd and more likely a 2nd.

I agree. I'll be surprised if Fields is anything more than a backup next season.

I think you're overvaluing Fields. I think you are going to be sorely disappointed if you expect to get a 2nd for him. Barring some freak injury out there in PS (it has happened), I think the Bears will be thrilled if they get a 3rd. And personally, I think they'll get less than a 3rd (give something back or some conditional 3rd, etc.).

I think you are going to be sorely disappointed if you expect to get a 2nd for Fields. It'll be robbery to get a 3rd.

Washington asked for a 2nd for Brissett. Just to give a recent barometer

The Browns got little for Baker because the deal was made already for Deshaun
