Presumably, AMC is doing it because they think they will make more money this way. I just don't know it's going to work out the way AMC wants it to work out.

I agree, this is asinine. First of all, who considers the front row in a theater a premium seat? That's usually way too close. And who is going to enforce this? After the movie starts are you going to have ushers check peoples tickets if they move in a half empty theater?

Well, the premium seats that are going to cost more are the central seats in the middle rows, not the front rows. But yeah, the whole plan is so dumb.

Thanks, I misread that part

ummm... i actually like the idea...

but this seems more of an advantage for the bad seat people... now they not only get to choose if they want to even see it at this time... but they get a discount for choosing those seats...

Well the theaters are struggling to get people to come in. They are trying to come up with ways to entice people to come in. There is nothing worse than walking into a movie not realizing that it was a sold out show and being forced into crappy front row seats.

So I could see these tiered prices as being a way to get some people to come in. If you buy a premium seat you know you will have a good seat no matter when you show up. Whereas some people will buy the discounted front row seats.

It may not work out but I don't see it as being all that terrible.

But every theater in my area already has assigned seating that you preselect in advance anyway, so you can already guarantee yourself a good seat without paying more.

There are a lot of people that are big fans of going to the movies(not me personally) as is evidenced by some massive opening box office draws for a lot of movies.

Now the actual movie fans will be able to buy their premium seats online and then go to the movie right as it's starting rather than sitting through 30 minutes of advertisements without having to worry about getting a good seat. The cheapskates aren't going to pay the extra dollar or two so the seats will be available.

I actually see this being of value to people that like to go to the movies.

But now there will be less competition for those seats.

I really can't say. Not every theater around here has assigned seating.

You act like people have not been buying reserved seats for the last 5 years or so. The concept of reserved seats is not the new concept AMC is talking about. The topic they are introducing is adding a premium to the nester seats.

I only go to the theater for the BIG movies that are better on the big screens. Story-driven movies don’t need to be seen in a theater.

I've got a great theater near me called Flagship Cinemas that lets you buy assigned seats, and they are all leather recliners, too. They don't charge extra for better seats though. It takes any stress out of going to the movies and worried you would get stuck with bad seats. All that for $10.50 for evening seats seems like a deal.

That's not what I'm saying(though admittedly I could've said if better). I equate this to paying an extra $150 on a flight for a little more leg room. Charging more immediately eliminates a shitload of people from the equation.

People that want those seats will pay for them.

Lol … I feel so old
Adding another layer to something to have to do to go watch a movie with 3 wide screens at home sorta doesn’t make sense …
