Giants rumored to be talking to the Brewers about a trade for Kolten Wong.

I do like the fit. He gives them a solid LH bat with a history of good defense. 2022 was an uncharacteristically bad year with the glove for Wong. Would be a nice addition depending on the cost.

Wow.

Winker PLUS for Wong? I would have thought it would have been Wong plus for Winker.
Winker did have an awful 2022 but the Mariners seemed to have soured on him quickly. Toro hasn't done much in the big leagues yet. They seemed to sour on him quickly as well.
I think the Mariners (and other teams who were interested) think that Wong will rebound defensively. However, I'm not sure so, if BBRef's dWAR is even close to reliable. There seems to be a trend. Has a player ever been able to reverse defensive slides in their 30s?

While the Rangers just signed deGrom to a big contract, I'm not sure that they are out of the running for Rodon. They are ready to win now and apparently are willing to spend the money. They need to continue to build that rotation and adding Rodon (or Verlander) would really help them.

The deGrom signing also intensifies the Mets' need for a top of the rotation guy. I expect that they will be in on both Verlander and Rodon as well.

Maybe the Giants can ship off some prospects to Pittsburgh and complete the circle

Glove declining fast, but that could be because he is not exactly inspired to practice/hustle in the field.

Not really advocating for his acquisition. It would just be even more embarrassing that we traded him before he got to the big leagues and would ship off prospects to get him back.

But that is money in the pot, so to speak (ie, it's not ours anymore), and not a good basis for whether or not we should trade for him.

If we can get a perceived good deal in trading for him, then we should do it. What happened before should not play into it.

Not sure how I feel about this. I like Correa. Just not sure I like the idea of Crawford at 3rd base. The last time he played there was for 2 games in 2010 with San Jose. He's 36 years old when the 2023 season starts. That could look not good and his bat would be a liability there as well.

Remaining cap space (including arbitration estimates) among NL West teams:
1. Diamondbacks - $134M
2. Giants - $96M
3. Dodgers - $66M
4. Rockies - $55M
5. Padres - $3M
Let's say the Giants land Judge at 9 years, $400m and Correa at 9 years, $288m (MLBTR estimate), that adds approximately another $76.4m to the payroll for 2023, leaving the Giants about $19.6m shy of the luxury tax threshold. They'd still have room to sign some players but probably not anyone worth signing. Do you all think a rotation of Webb, Cobb, DeSclafani, Wood and Junis, along with a lineup of Wade/Flores, Estrada, Correa, Judge, Pederson, Crawford/Davis, Slater, Yastrzemski and Bart would be playoff worthy? I assume that about 10m would be used to fortify the bullpen and the remaining 9.5m would be wiggle room to stay under the threshold and/or used in the midseason trade deadline.

By the way, if you look at MLBTR's Top 50 free agents and the predicted signing amounts, you'll see that they are lower than actual signings, thus far. Correa could easily be 320m at 9 years. If that is the case, the Giants would only have about 16m left before hitting the luxury cap threshold. Most of the guys on this list would then be out of reach, unless ownership is willing to exceed the cap for a few years.

I would love to see them sign Judge, but I can't see them shell out another $30+mm for a SS. There are too many other holes to fill. For Correa money, we could shore up the pitching with a quality SP and a quality RP. I'd be willing to gamble that Crawford can return to form in large part. I have to believe his dropoff last year was health related.

11/300 for Trea Turner.

Yikes.

We knew these would be big contracts. Now we know they ARE big contracts.

Boy, if they could only have seen me throw a Wiffle ball in junior high....

Is this merely tire kicking (in Sabean vernacular) or has the FO already decided to move on from Bart? Vazquez has made it clear that he wants to be the primary catcher wherever he lands.

32 YO catcher who has had one OK year in 2019 and who is pretty clearly on the decline who wants to be a starter?

Knowing this FO, I wouldn’t put anything past them.
