That start was less than ideal.

Estaquio not starting says he was probably hurting like hell through the entire group stage.

Gonna forever be haunted by what could've been had he been healthy.

That's better, nice run by Larin and Buchanan almost got on the end of it.

It's tough to win when you're getting Oilers-esque goaltending. You gotta make that save. Defending was shambolic as well.

Belgium meanwhile doing Belgium things. Missing good scoring chances and relying on Courtois to keep them alive.

How long do we have to pretend that this team - which has underperformed at every major tournament - going out in the group stage is really THAT shocking?

They were very good in 2018. Just as easily could've been this very matchup in the Final that year, were very much equal the part to France in the SF.

But they were crap at Euro 2020 (Portugal threw everything and the kitchen sink at them but in typical Portuguese fashion couldn't bury a goal - come to think of it, that game was a lot like the Canada-Belgium match - then Italy manhandled them), kept Martinez inexplicably and now are here.

They're just very mid. Which is fine, it's not a large country and their history isn't exactly loaded with success. Countries like them, Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, whenever they have success it's very much a case of them punching above their weight and that's always entertaining. But the aura of them being among the best nations on earth, constantly being up in the rankings, the hype etc. is far too much.

As John McEnroe said, "Chalk flew up". So close for Atiba.

Plenty to work on for 2026, but still proud of the effort.

Despite the ranking, I'd argue they actually over-achieved in 2018 relative to their play on the field. To get as far as they did, they needed a miracle comeback over Japan and a Golden Glove tournament from Courtois.

And I definitely agree with accepting them as a quality mid team. They're not among the top tier. That's not to say they couldn't win one a la Greece in 2004, but this idea that they're the equal of France or Germany (despite their current downturn) is silly.

I mean, I'm not surprised to see this kind of tweet and while it is disappointing to see no points from three games, I don't agree with being outclassed in two of three games. They were the far better side versus Belgium and were a whisker away from tying Morocco.
