People that cover the Padres would disagree.
I don’t disagree but he is young. Young kids do dumb stuff, not advocating for a trade or anything but I just think it’s too early to say he is a cancer.

"Regardless of what we do, the bulk of what our 2023 team will look like is already here," - Jerry Dipoto.

On the one hand I have to give Dipoto some credit for building what we have, but on the other hand this is a stupid approach.

Here are some stats Dipoto should take into consideration:

The Mariners finished 27th in batting average, 27th in hits, 18th in runs scored. Their highest rated significant offensive statistic is OBP and even that was below league average.

If this is the approach of the front office this offseason, we might be going into next year with a worse roster than we had in 2022 barring significant leaps from young players.
Yeah it is weird, I read they reached out to Nimmo, but the only other real things are they linked to that Japanese pitcher and Jerry is trying to trade Flexen and Marco. Nimmo seems fine but I don’t understand if they aren’t willing to “overspend” on one of the SS but are cool with overpaying for a pitcher who IMO projects to be the number 5 guy if he signs with them. And I can’t see in any scenario do the Mariners get a significant bat with Flexen or Marco as the centerpiece.

I get what you are saying about overspending..

It just is not ..necessary...to over spend..

If it was..I would on turner..or bogarts.. but I just don't think it is.....
I think..2 or 3 trade..would help the mariners more..

1kelenic for Torres..
2 toescar Hernandez for???? Maybe Swanson I'm not sure..
#3.. no t sure yet..lololo

.With binantendi..and conforto....is way enough..
And haniger..

Apparently they have expressed formal interest in Brandon Nimmo.

Not sure if that fits your bill but I do like the fact that he has a career OPS of .827 and it's not like that's boosted by hitting a bunch of homers.
I like Nimmo too but, imo, he's a bit too fragile for a 5-year commitment, which is probably what it would take. I'd rather they trade for Amed Rosario. Rosario is an FA after next season so it wouldn't cost too much to get him from Cleveland. Cleveland, a low-payroll club, probably won't want to pay Rosario what he will command for the third time through arbitration. And who knows? By the end of next season, maybe one of our fading AAA outfield prospects (Kelenic, Trammel, Lewis) will have shown enough at the MLB level to take over for Rosario in 2024.

RF Amed Rosario (R) (from CLEV for Winker and [maybe] a lower-level prospect in the #12-#15 range. Free agent after 2023)
SS Crawford (L)
CF Julio (R)
1B Josh Bell (S) (FA, 4 yrs/$68 mill). This guy is at the top of my wish list with everyone else a distant second
DH France (R)
3B Saurez (R)
C Raliegh (S)
LF Kelenic (L)/Trammel (L)/Lewis (R). I wouldn't mind punching in Haniger (3/$39) or Conforto (2/$25) here if the price is right but I don't have much confidence that the price will be right.
2B Frazier (L) (FA, 2 years, $17 mill)

Ryan Divish seems to have the most inside information on the Mariners and this article didn't exactly make me very optimistic we'll be making any big swings at Turner, Correa, Bogaerts or Swanson.

"So why do the Mariners remain so firm in keeping Crawford at shortstop, limiting their options. MLB insiders and those close to the game had plenty of theories as to why with one being quite obvious.

“Realistically, Jerry can say that because he knows they probably can’t sign any of those four shortstops unless they really overpay,” said a MLB agent, who didn’t represent any of the four shortstops. “Even then, that might not be enough. It kind of lowers the bar for him.”

Indeed, even if Dipoto came out and said they were willing to move Crawford to second base for one of those four shortstops, it doesn’t significantly improve their chances of signing one. The length and total salary represents the driving force."
If Dipoto has plans to shop Crawford, he won't make that knowledge public. Crawford is the heart and soul of the team. If you publicly state that you want to trade [the heart and soul of your team], that could be a team-morale killer. Not really the feeling you want to be the white elephant in the room when camp opens up in February.

I don't think Dipoto is endorsing Crawford because he knows he can't pay an elite shortstop. I think he is endorsing JP because he believes the team needs Crawford's leadership. At least, I hope that is why he is saying it.

Conforto is interesting but can anyone explain why he is highly touted? I wouldn’t mind him being on the team at all, but he is 2 years removed but being worth a multi year deal. If he gets a 2 year deal it should be massively incentive laden.

I think ulmax is the only one highly touting him. He seems like a gamble to me. But so is Haniger, at a higher annual price and longer commitment. Conforto's one advantage is that he is a left-handed hitter. If they are going to add a power hitter, I'd prefer it be a lefty or switch hitter. The middle, power part of our batting order is right-handed heavy right now.

Hopefully..the mariners can..get.a couple.

I don’t really have an opinion on him at all, but you actually brought up a good comp in Haniger. Is any fan really going to say they want Mitch on any multi year deal? I’d prefer Conforto over Winker but Conforto was average at best in his last season then the absence.

Plus, if the M’s had interest I think they would’ve signed him last year like they did with Graveman, Giles and Munoz.

Yes bit of a gamble..but so is crossing the street...if you don't do it right...or freeway..whichever you prefer..

It's not about..getting..the huggest contract..for the teams..

It's about..adding offence....200..hits worth.

If you add haniger and he stays healthy .
You get a guy who would be close to
Last year's judge..not as good of Ave..

A top player..

A player with..300 Ave..Gets a hit..a little less.
Than 1/3rd of the time...
A player with a 250 ave..gets a hit..about 1/4th
Of the time . .

Hopefully most of the players will fit into those 2 somehow...they never do...like trying to fit
Round into square.,.

Humans don't fit that well..into a box..

Still ball players do the best they can.,.lolololoo
