Matos probably has a higher ceiling, but this year kinda scared me off. Personally, I think Schmitt is our #3 prospect.

Luciano and Harrison are 1a and 1b. I don’t think you can list one over the other.

I assume that you would rank them as such:

T1 Marco Luciano
T1 Kyle Harrison
3 Casey Schmitt
4 Luis Matos
5 ???

Assuming Matos is 4th, who would you put in the 5th spot?

Brainstorm short list…

Brown
Wisenhunt
Arteaga
Pomares

assuming this constitutes our top 8 prospects, one thing jumps out at me…

Not a single first rounder really even deserves consideration on this list. Ramos, Bishop, Crawford, Bednar, Bailey. Not exactly all busts, but no breakouts, either. Though I would rate Ramos, Bailey and Bishop closer to “bust” status than I feel comfortable with.

I think Bishop is the closest to bust among that group. He is 24 years old and didn't look that good in high A ball this year (while being a year older than the average player at that level). Now, he stayed relatively healthy this year and posted some of his best numbers since his professional debut but that only helps the argument that he is closest to bust.

Ramos comes in 2nd because he's done pretty well before this year (well, really, since last year when he got promoted to AAA). I don't think the FO have done him any favors this year either but his AAA numbers are case for concern. His age, however, and his past production does give some hope that this is only a blip.

Bailey, meanwhile, has done nothing to take over the top spot as the premier catching prospect. The fact, however, that all other catching prospects took a step backward (Genoves, Sugastey, Santana) keeps him in the conversation. His numbers were better, though, than Bishop and he is a year younger, so there is still some time for Bailey to right the ship. It will be interesting to see if the Giants re-sign Genoves and stick him in AAA or just let him walk as a minor league free agent. The latter would leave the upper minors wide open for Bailey.

Bednar, I think, isn't that close to being a bust yet. He lost half the season to injury and while his ERA wasn't that great, his home run rate was a bit elevated and he issued too many walks, he did keep his WHIP down (1.093, limiting hits to 5.2 per 9) and had a decent K rate (10.7 per 9). I think that he still has time to get the home runs and walks down. The bigger question may be - can he stay healthy.

Crawford seemed like a stretch as a first round pick but time will tell.

One name I missed is McCray. I don’t really see why everyone is gaga over him, but I haven’t seen him, so I have no basis for my reservation.

Thinking about busts, how about the 2nd round picks (with one exception) from the past 5 years:
2017 - Jacob Gonzalez - The actual son of Luis Gonzalez, the 90s/00s MLB outfielder, tanked in his time with the Giants' org. He finally started hitting in A ball this year with the Pirates' organization, after they drafted him in the minor league portion of last year's Rule 5 draft.
2018 - Sean Hjelle - He struggled at AAA and got yanked around (much like Ramos) at the big league level. Still a bit early to rule him a bust but he is trending that way.
2019 - Logan Wyatt - The almost 25 year old hasn't made it out of A ball yet and spent most of this season (when healthy) either at the ACL Giants Orange or San Jose. In between the two stops, he hit a mere .213/.286/.245 in 105 plate appearances. The other two 1st basemen the Giants drafted that year have not fared much better.
2020 - Two guys were drafted in the 2nd round this year. So far, the results are very encouraging. We all know about Casey Schmitt's ascent from Eugene to Sacramento this season. The other guy, Nick Swiney, posted decent numbers with Eugene (3.84 ERA, 1.213 WHIP, 10.6 K/9).
2021 - Matt Mikulski - Early results are not encouraging. In 22 appearances (18 of them starts), he got bombed in San Jose to the tune of a 6.95 ERA, with a 1.582 WHIP. His K rate was decent (10.9) but he gives up too many hits (10.7 per 9) and walks (3.5 per 9).
2022 - Carson Whisenhunt - I know that cal already has him in the top 5. While I may not put him there yet, his professional debut was certainly good. In 4 games (3 starts, 7.2 IP), between ACL Giants Orange and San Jose, he did not allow an earned run while giving up just 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 14 batters.

At least the 2nd round picks from the last 5 years are looking, as a group, a little bit better than the 1st rounders.

As near as I can tell, this should be the list of minor league free agents from the Giants' org this offseason:
Pitchers (12) - Ben Bowden, Enmanuel De Jesus, Norwith Gudino, Trevor Hildenberger, Wei-Chieh Huang, Andrew Vasquez, Ronnie Williams; Melvin Adon, Jorge Guzman, Ofelky Peralta; Abel Adames; Willian Suarez
Catchers (4) - Ricardo Genoves, Andrew Knapp, Patrick Mazeika, Jhonny Pereda
Infielders (4) - Isan Diaz, Jason Krizan, Dixon Machado, Yermin Mercedes
Outfielders (4) - Willie Calhoun, Ismael Munguia; Jacob Heyward, Diego Rincones

The only players I'd like to see re-signed are Genoves, Diaz and maybe Vasquez, Adon, Knapp and Rincones.

To be clear, I put him on a quick short list of players to be considered at #4. That is far from my putting him in my top 5

I'm not sure what happened with Munguia. He had an awesome 2021 season at high A+. He hit .336 with an OPS of close to .900. He walked only 13 times in 333 AB's but he K'ed only 27 times! He will be only 24 in October. His MiLB bio says he is injured, but I've seen nothing about it.

Gudino was a flame thrower until he met the hitters at AAA where his ERA has been close to 9.00 all season. They've tried him starting, in relief, everything but nothing has worked.

But yeah, the majority of these names will not be missed.

I am Curious how the Giants convesion rate for high draftees against the average and against the Good drafting teams. Also It always seems the Yankees have a conveyor of prospects and even have plenty to trade for immediate help. For the present Regime not enough data but how did the previous and Magowan(sp) regime measure up (I know the time of Bum draft with Posey and Crawford and others we seemed to have a short boom) but how would the Giants rate compared to average for Drafting and the best. Also undrafted free agents that you can think of who become something maybe even replacement level which can fill a roster with cheaper players.

The ’08 draft was amazing. I would argue it was one of the greatest team-drafted in the history of the mlb draft. The Giants got Posey, Crawford and Gilaspie in that draft. Posey and Crawford were the #1 and #2 players taken that year, and only a few big names came out of it at all (Posey 44.8 WAR, Craw 31.0, Lance Lynn 30.2). I am unaware of any similarly week draft where one team got so loaded from.

And one thing that alot of people forget about the ‘07 draft (where we got Bum), was that the Giants had FIVE first rounders that year, and only hit with Bum.

And one other of those picks is still around too. His WAR isn't great but he's been able to stick in the big leagues a lot longer than I expected.
