4.43 at his combine time. Not particularly fast from that standpoint, but then again he's 5'11, 206 lbs, so for a stocky guy that does make him rather speedy for such a build. And like you said, this is the type of player Poles is seeking out.
The Bears home page has Ebner listed at 215 lbs, which makes his 4.43 40 time even that much more impressive.

I find it interesting that we have yet to take a LB or a P, the latter of which became a need once Pat O'Donnell left us for the enemy.

Bears getting set for back-back picks. Josh Jobe, Bama's CB still on the board, which is a bit of a surprise. He'd make for a nice value pick, along with some big time depth to the secondary if he's still there when Poles selects. Same with Michigan's LB, Josh Ross. And on the other side of the ball with Clemson's Justyn Ross, WR. Some decent value still out there.

Bears go with another safety in Cal's Elijah Hicks. One more coming up before they call it a day and a draft.

And that's a wrap for the '22 Bears draft!!!
Pretty rare that your last pick (in the 250's nonetheless) winds up being a guy that will probably make an impact on every game in front of us for at least the next few years. O'Donnell definitely wasn't bad. A bad punter can burn you. Hopefully he's ready for the next level because he's immediately our guy and is now the punter for the Chicago Bears.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've always felt STs don't get their fair share of love in the NFL and that usually goes double when it comes to drafting positions such as kicker, punter, and long snapper.

Time for an immediate summary. First off, our picks:

Round 2: pick 39 - Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington
Round 2: pick 48 - Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State
Round 3: pick 71 - Velus Jones, WR, Tennessee
Round 5: pick 168 - Braxton Jones, OL, Southern Utah
Round 5: pick 174 - Dominique Robinson, EDGE, Miami of OH
Round 6: pick 186 - Zachary Thomas, OL, San Diego State University
Round 6: pick 203 - Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor
Round 6: pick 207 - Doug Kramer, OL, Illinois
Round 7: pick 226 - Ja’Tyre Carter, OL, Southern
Round 7: pick 254 - Elijah Hicks, S Cal
Round 7: pick 255 - Trenton Gill, P, North Carolina State

My initial "paper" grade (because we all know it's really silly to grade a draft when these college kids haven't even signed a pro contract, let alone play) is a B, maybe even leaning a bit to a B+ and this of course is also relative to when we were able to select.

We likely got two Day 1 starters in Gordon and Brisker. Jones is becoming ever more intriguing as an unexpected selection and he has a decent chance of becoming our #3 receiver, which in today's NFL is akin to being a starter. I'm already reading articles that suggest the Bears chose him to be our version of Deebo Samuel, the ultimate hybrid WR/RB. That remains to be seen. I like that Poles drafted 4 on the OL. Would have liked to see a bit more on the other side of the line and as I mentioned earlier in this thread, a bit surprised that no LB was taken. But I suppose beggars can't be choosy. I am glad tho that we used our last pick on a punter.

All in all, not a bad couple of days in Bearsville.

The Bears have reportedly inked 6 UDFAs:

Savon Scarver, WR Utah St
Kevin Shaa, WR Liberty
Jake Tonges, TE Cal
Jack Sanborn, LB Wisconsin
Chase Allen, TE Iowa St
Allie Green, CB Missouri

I'm sure many more to come.

Adding 17 bodies including the udfas. Looks like we’re gonna be busy evaluating talent. Hopefully we get a reasonable amount of hits from this group. God knows we need it.

On to the 2022 ass kickings.

Some other perspective on this year’s draft:

Last time we had this many picks was 2008. We got Matt Forte, Earl Bennett, Craig Steltz, Kellen Davis, Zach Bowman and a bunch of garbage including our first rounder Chris Williams. 12 picks that year. So more doesn’t necessarily mean better. Time will tell.

Generally speaking, more simply means more......heads will roll that is, including what is likely a few of these draftees and UFDAs. But we needed to add bodies, we needed to get younger, we needed to get faster, we needed to get meaner. I think Poles did a yeoman's job at accomplishing these tasks for the most part. It's a start, nothing more.

Ebner is a guy who should be able to make solid contributions early as well. Especially considering that a RB or two are almost guaranteed, at some point, to miss time. After this year, if he pans out, I don't mind him playing 2nd fiddle to Herbert in the backfield provided he does well (Monty almost certainly gone). He's capable of everything out of the backfield and can return kicks very well. A hair under 6 foot and a 4.43 speed guy.

I also am intrigued by Robinson. Converted to edge from WR. 6'5 250+ with just fantastic measurables and athleticism out of him shown on film and at the combine. A project, definitely. Solid ceiling there, though.

Williams was a miss. However, outside of that? Really not a bad draft, at all. Pretty standard and par for the course, in fact. One pro bowler/all pro. Two guys in Bennett/Bowman who were regular contributors for 6 years each, started quite a bit, and made some big plays along the way. A good depth safety and solid SPT's contributor in Steltz. Then, Davis who certainly did a solid job in the red zone. However, never developed into a 1st string TE as hoped. But again... he was a 5th round pick and those are generally depth guys.

If you look over the average team's 5 top players from any given NFL draft. 1 perennial pro bowler, 2 regular starters/contributors for an extended period of time, one depth SPT's player, and another niche guy (red zone TE, in this case). That's probably along the lines of what most drafts turn out as. Again, it wasn't great. However, it wasn't bad either.

Also, that draft was 3 administrations ago. So, I don't really care. More players does provide you a larger pool of players and a better chance at hitting. That's just common sense. No one is saying it's a guarantee for ANYTHING. I know how you like to build your strawman houses, though ;)

I am thinking along the C+ to B- draft. Think the Bears grabbed three starters, first two picks and the punter. However, Poles did manage to grab some very interesting picks later. Athletic, high ceiling guys if any of them pan out.

More never means better but when you have a lot of camp slots to fill it makes sense to buy more lotto tickets and see if you hit.

This was a C- draft. Two starters, one a punter, and all other picks are depth guys for the next season or two. Hoping some of the latter round picks work out.

I stated in my B grade that what must be taken into account is when we drafted. Considering we had no 1st rounder and that 8 of our 11 picks were well past the top 150, I thought the draft went better than expected. Like other Bears fans, I would have liked to see a bit more aggression early on with the trenches. But then again unlike other Bears fans, I was glad he didn't heed the call for going heavy on the WR position.
