Scares me to see how stagnant this team has gotten. But they made their bed by letting Ben ride it out the past couple years when it became obvious that a new rebuild was needed. I view the 2021 season as a bridge year with Ben at the helm, even if I drank the koolaid numerous times convincing myself that they could have made more of it. But the Steelers are positioned to truly rebuild this year. Ben is gone, and the team has $40-45m in cap space (including carryover). Lots of low hanging fruit to extend that number to $50-60m too.

If Tomlin is indeed a HOF-worthy coach then he & the new GM will rebuild this team quickly and get them back into contention to rewrite his footprint. Tomlin was very fortunate to have inherited a HOF QB for the entirety of his head coaching career. That will be a substantial disclaimer hanging over any accolades that he has accomplished.
We need a season in the gutter. Screw the no losing season record. Build the foundation this offseason, ride with the broken pieces like Mason, come into the draft next year in a position to get whoever we want.

I think most fans would be fine with a rebuilding year if it meant they are positioned to dominate again after that. I fear and expect the bandaid approach that we have seen the last two years.

Agreed. Knowing how this team has operated with Tomlin they will take the fan-pleasing approach and keep the seats filled.

We'll know a lot within the first few weeks of FA what this team intends to do. If they throw money around at star skill talent vs rebuilding the trenches &/or shoring up the D then this team is doomed.

If they trade up or trade for a QB, and bring back at least 3/5 of the OL in the same configuration as how this season started, then we're doomed.

How would you feel if they rebuilt the OL in FA, and traded up to get Pickett?

If they rebuilt the line first? I'd be better with it. They need to change the line significantly. What they did this season did not work. Fully rebuilt from the inside out. They need to fix holes on the D, that means at least one new starting ILB. They have potential holes at SS and at CB.

It's a big lift.

Trading up to get picket might be really expensive though. To get in range of him might take 3 1sts. I don't want to do that.

Yea it depends on cost for the trade up. I imagine they will wait to see how far he falls before throwing out an offer to trade up. But if they go all in on rebuilding the OL in FA then it may be more justified.

Sign OT Armstead, which means Moore Jr switches to RT. Doubt this happens but one can dream. Maybe they go after a RT instead & keep Moore at LT. Sign OG Scherff or Norwell. Couple of Centers set to hit FA: Ryan Jenson (TB), Matt Paradis (CAR), Jason Kelce (PHI - retires?), and Ben Jones (TEN).

LT - Armstead
LG - Dotson
C - FA/Rookie
RG - Scherff/Norwell

RT - Moore

If they can get 2 new additions from FA they will be in great shape for next year.

Resigning Minkah should be the first priority. Everything else can come afterwards. O-Line needs to be the main priority in the draft. I don't see us drafting or signing anyone worth the starting QB job so I'd say Mason is our QB for at least the start of 2022. Need a new OC and a new WR coach. Sorry, but Hilliard isn't cutting it. Diontae still having drop issues, Chase and Juju's attitude problem, James Washington very visibly being unhappy with his play time. I'd also say we need a new QB coach too. Mason showed no development whatsoever.

NEEDS:
New O-Line additions
New OC
New QB coach
New WR coach

Unpopular Opinion time: I would not resign JuJu unless he takes less than what he did last year.

No accomplished DC is going to want to come here and take a job if they can't even run their own defense.

Facts. This looks more like the Steelers satisfying the Rooney Rule than actually making this a legitimate interview.

They might promote Austin, who will be happy for the pay bump. They might attract some outside positional guy, who would be happy for the pay bump and chance to be a DC even if in name only. They might attract a bottom-tier guy who would be happy to mail it in while Tomlin does all the work.

They will not attract any big name D Coords with the reputation Tomlin left with Butler.

For all of us that want this team to fix the OL, I fear the AFC landscape is going to force the Steelers' hand. When you're looking at playing in a conference that features Pat Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Mac Jones, Lamar Jackson, etc for the next decade... That's gotta be weighing pretty damn heavy on this staff.

I'm sure most of us are praying they make some big moves early in FA to get some quality OLineman to shore up the biggest problem plaguing this offense. That will make stomaching whatever they decide to do at QB much easier: whether that be trading for a bigger fish, or moving in the draft to get a better rookie prospect. If they really intend to trot out Rudolph next year then they better be damn sure they plug every hole they can using their available capital. I'm with you on a vet FA. Minshew, Winston, Trubisky... All have high ceilings but have proven why they aren't viewed as a franchise guy. Its exactly what they need though. Someone capable of high level of play that is eager to prove themselves.

I did recently see a rumor that the Bears could shop Justin Fields this offseason. I doubt its true, but an interesting thought. I know Tomlin loves that kid.

If they do sign an established DC from outside the organization then I would hope that indicates that Tomlin is letting go of his control on the defense. But that's the dreamer in me talking.

Agreed, and he's tailor-made for Canada's offense and everything that Tomlin has been gushing about with mobile QBs. If Fields is available then they would be stupid not to pursue him.

That said, I don't see it happening simply because the Bears cannot be that stupid to move on that quickly.
