I hate it but its necessary. The joy players take in laying someone out who isn't prepared is scary. No possible reason to end someone's career, or, for that matter, his life

My thinking has changed over time. I love the sport and played organized football for several years. But, especially at the higher levels, guys are just getting too big and fast to play the game the way they used to.

Unfortunately, I agree with you.

I think it has more to do with how much better we are today at identifying injuries

Example back in the 80s you get a concussion and you are playing through that shit. Today not so much.
Of the 50 on week 2’s injury report, only 2 are for concussion.

Seems like there have been more NON contact injuries (and major ones at that) this year

Everything that has been said. Conditioning to the level of sport, keep the nose clean, etc.

Seems like lack of conditioning during training camp and less training camps has lead to this

Injuries are part of the game, expect it. There's plenty of replacements. Entertainment is more important than watering down a sport predicated on physical dominance

It's as simple as pie why there are more injuries.

1. The league has mandated that no pads can be worn for the first week of training camp.
2. There is zero contact in OTAs, Mini camps and Week 1 of training camp.
3. Players spend more time trying to establish or maintain their "Brand" in the off season rather than train.
4. Teams don't "condition" or stretch seriously during Week 1 and don't take the time after Week 1 of camp.

5. AND WORST OF ALL: Have taken much of the defensive contact out of the game. When actual contact is truly started, offensive players are hurt more often than defensive players. Defense gets hurt trying to over-extend.

There's just no way to downgrade training and maintain a high level of physical contact over 20+ weeks of NFL football.

The vast majority of football players don't have a "brand" and the notion that more contact will lead to fewer injuries.. well that a hugely counter-intuitive claim on its face and calls for a whole lot of evidence before we even think about giving it credence.

Agreed. The non-contact excuse is absurd

There will be more rule changes that emphasize player safety... possibly some weight limit thresholds to try to reign in some of the "bigger stronger bodies via chemistry" tendencies. As @Montalban posted, players are getting bigger/stronger/faster but their bones, tendons and skulls, etc. are not.

Interesting that some of you seem to believe that increased injuries are due to not enough contact. That's just nuts.
Agreed with increased injuries coincides with less contact.

I disagree
How so? Any contact sport carries a perception that injuries will occur that’s just a fact. Contact sports are injury laden because of their DNA. I say less pads less injury but even then non contact injuries occur. I don’t know the numbers but I d be willing to say that non contact injuries like pulled hammed are more of a statistic than a broken leg or neck from contact. Regardless, they’re all injuries and defending against them is near impossible when 2 people are engaged in contact.

You really think most players want to hurt, injure or kill another player? I mean sure defenders n OL celebrate big hits, but for the most part once they realize the player who was hit might be hurt or worse. The tone changes considerably.

I will say thoug, it wouldn't surprise me if there have been players throughout the years that wouldn't shed too many tears about crippling or maybe even killing another player. They'd just chalk up to risk of playing the game.

Jack Lambert and Duck Butkus would agree
