I have no idea how many innings he gets the rest of season but I will wait at least half of next season

A lack of confidence is probably not the reason why he kept hitting a wall after 3 innings. It's also the exact opposite mindset you want a starter to have.

It has been since mid-June since he went as many as 4 innings. In 11 starts this year he has made it to 4 innings twice. Like I said, he is a real innings eater.

There is a chance that Howard could turn into a great set up man or even a closer someday. It really looks like the pen is where his value lies. The sooner we give up on him as a starter and convert him to a reliever, the better.

That being said, I know they have to make sure he can't start first. Get him on a conditioning program this winter. Start him in Round Rock next year and see if he still has a drop in velocity and/or effectiveness after the third or fourth inning. If he does then send him to the pen.
