The guy who managed last year's AL champions? Hardly the surprise candidate that often wins the award.
Managing the podunk Rays to back to back playoffs is better than nearly making it. It isn’t saying that Servais is terrible but you can’t give the award to him when he hasn’t reached the playoffs. That is something UCF football does

And guess where their payroll stands for 2021? 26/30 at ~70m. In 2020, they were 28/30.

Seattle is 25/30 at 82m for 2021.

The only team that have had some success with such a low payrolls are the A's.

This team played surprisingly well this year and it's really nice to see the Jerry Project coming along... but also being tucked up here, there are several managers ahead of Servais that'll get noticed for the award.

The award often goes to the manager of the team that most exceeded expectations. The Rays were in the World Series last year. The M's were expected to win around 70 games. Seattle pushing for a playoff spot, possibly even getting there would exceed expectations far more than the Rays winning the East again.

This is mostly false. BBWAA gives zero shits about this stuff.

Only six managers have won the award while leading a team that finished outside the top two spots in its division. Ted Williams was the first, after leading the "expansion" Washington Senators to a third-place finish (and, at 86-76, their only winning season) in the American League East, in 1969. Buck Rodgers won the award in 1987 with the third-place Expos. Tony Peña and Showalter won the award with third-place teams in back-to-back years: Peña with the Royals in 2003, and Showalter with the Rangers in 2004. Joe Girardi is the only manager to win the award with a fourth-place team (2006 Florida Marlins); he is also the only manager to win the award after fielding a team with a losing record.

Good luck getting Servais to even get a vote.

Well here's a guy from KC who's taking notice. I'm thinking those who are paid to do this are also paying attention.

Sure! What do you have in mind?

As long as the M's go .500 or better from here on out, Servais gets at least 1 1st place vote.

If he doesn't you win.

Amend this if you want, but obviously a tank job would alter things from where they stand today.

Also, to be clear... we're talking about him getting a 1st place vote... not second or 3rd right? Because I don't think he'll win the award and it'll be easier for him to get a vote. But I'm willing to wager a 1st place vote for him from someone in BBWAA.

Even in the midseason awards predictions he was getting 2nd place votes, so I'll agree to 1st place vote only.

Sure! I'll play to keep things interesting the rest of the season.
I've never done a bet like this before... what happens to the winner/loser?

Avatar bet. Winner chooses the loser's avatar for a stretch of time. Let's say from announcement til All Star break 2022.

I'm convinced the M's could win the World Series and nothing positive would be said about the GM or Manager of this team around here.

Those guys absolutely earned extensions. You thought clubhouse morale was down after trading Graveman. Try explaining to the team why you let your GM and manager go after the season they're having.
Oh they for sure both deserve extensions, just not sure Servais will be named the manager of the year but we will see

I don't like Servais as manager. I thought they were using him up until the team hit a certain point then they can his ass and bring in a real manager. But no they extend the guy. I think he is a boring windbag and lets his teams play stupid and sloppy and he doesn't know how to handle the bullpen.

I don't like used car Jerry much either but its obvious he has brought in some talented players so I can somewhat get his extension.

That's all I have to say on that subject.

Awesome. Can't wait to see what the loser's avatar will look like. :D Some fun stuff here on the thread besides the ups and downs of the WC race. I respect both of you guy's knowledge and opinions. I pretty much fall in line with Msfann's above post. Have little respect for Servais as an MLB Mgr (in training) and with JD, if one likes him or not, has been putting together one of the more fun Seattle baseball seasons to follow in a long, long time whether this group makes a WC spot or not.

Imo Dipoto has done a great job turning a shit farm system into a great farm system. Whether that translates into MLB success remains to be seen, but the potential is there. I don't mind his extension at all. Servais I think most teams would have canned years ago, but as we already know the M's front office doesn't care too much about winning. Would rather see the M's go in a different direction there.

I don’t really blame them for wanting some consistency in the managerial department even if they have to go through some growing pains. The turnover rate since Lou is astronomical and Servais is the longest tenured manager since Lou. It could be a good thing for some of these players.

Exceeding expectations sure, but it isn’t like the Mariners were projected to win 40 games and almost made the playoffs. Guess we can agree to disagree, the Rays are still the Rays and are in the toughest division in baseball and winning it again is just as deserving as a non playoff team. This isn’t crapping on Servais at all I can’t see any foreseeable way for him to be in consideration unless they make the wildcard game. The old school voters like winners and the new school voters like analytics so without the playoffs he is screwed by both camps.
