79 will be available. Thinking McNeil may want it. 54 is OK I guess. Mullbach changed his number from 46 to 48. He wants to make sure his jersey number is higher than his age.

Some players Jersey numbers will change once final cuts are made and others are made available

It might afford us 1 more top FA if we can push most of his comp back a year
At this point unless a player was cut every team is waiting until June 1st to sign. I still love the idea of Trai Turner

"Yeah, look, we have interest in Todd," Lions coach Dan Campbell said ahead of Thursday's OTA practice. "We do and we're talking with him and his agent."

Campbell went on to say the team's interest in Gurley, 26, was not a reflection on the organization's feelings about their top two running backs, D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams.

"Just because we have interest in (Gurley), that does not affect our feeling and our thoughts on both Swift and Jamaal," Campbell said.

It is starting to look like Cornell is never going to get a shot. Already tough as a late pick, especially with new leadership.

The Gurley stuff is the first thing they have done that makes 0 sense to me. I have not loved everything they have done, but it at least had some merit. Gurley would improve nothing, and actively get in the way of Swifts snaps.

No surprises here. Figured they would dump those 2 guys and at least Cornell is trying, LOL.

Yup, I wont be happy if he gets anything more than a vet type contract. He is too beat up to give superstar money to.

You never know what will transpire as he gets his first true OTA's, Mini-Camp and Training Camp.

None of last years rookies or incoming FA got a fair shot with pretty much nothing more than zoom classes prior to limited camp.

Agree.

This team is in a rebuild and at times the FO/Coaching Staff appears to portray they're a 7-9 win team with certain acquisitions made or trying to make. Attempting to acquire Gurley doesn't make sense to me either. Groom the kids who are UDFA or Jefferson and see what happens (unless the coaching already doesn't see any possible potential in them).

Rakeem Boyd was an injury settlement waived/released as he wasn't able to practice during those three weeks so maybe he gets another shot once he's healthy - somewhere

A lot of "If'" will be riding on the line -

Does Vaitai earn his $$$ this year as the RG.

Does Jackson improve his pass blocking now with a year under his belt (Ragnow struggled his first year also then saw a pretty good rise in play his 2nd year - granted switched back to his natural position at C in that 2nd year).

What struggles will Sewell have in his first NFL season AND his 1st time playing football in nearly 21 months

In PFF’s recent rankings of offensive linemen, both Decker (19) and Sewell (31) made the list of top tackles in the league, while Ragnow came in as their third-best center. The pieces are there to impress in 2021, but can they put it together?

Some of the biggest plays in 7-on-7 periods in the two open in OTA practices so far have come from Swift.

Last week, he outran linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin on a crossing route, and quarterback Jared Goff hit him perfectly in stride. Swift ran down the right sideline for a big gain.

This week, Swift made a terrific grab across the middle in 7-on-7s after cutting behind a dropping Trey Flowers and then splitting the safeties for a score. Later in practice, Swift made a nasty cut to get by linebacker Alex Anzalone on an option route over the middle to make a grab for another big gain. It was such a filthy cut by Swift that the offense started chirping at the defense, including running backs coach/assistant head coach Duce Staley.

Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey ranked the best offensive lines heading into the 2021 season, placing the Lions near the top of the list at No. 10. (That’s a high ranking for anything related to Detroit.)

Here’s exactly how Lindsey put it: “It’s fair to be optimistic about Detroit building one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.”

Boy that’s nice to read, huh? Lindsey points to left tackle Taylor Decker’s career-high 82.0 overall grade and 85.8 pass-blocking grade in 2020, as well as center Frank Ragnow’s third-best mark among the league’s centers at 80.3. The guy is constantly making top lists at his position.

Throw in rookie Penei Sewell at right tackle — the top offensive tackle on the PFF draft board — and Detroit is in good shape in 2021. The only position still in need of some work is guard, but the hope is moving Halapoulivaati Vaitai from right tackle to right guard will fix some of those pass-blocking issues, and Jonah Jackson lives up to his potential after a less-than-stellar 57.0 overall grade last season.

Linsey also ranked all 32 defensive line units and Detroit didn’t place as badly as you’d think, coming in at No. 24. The Lions finished the season at No. 30 but managed to climb up a few spots after adding Michael Brockers, Levi Onwuzurike and Alim McNeill.

“It’s easy to forget, given how bad Detroit’s defense has been these past two seasons, that (Trey) Flowers is one of the better defensive linemen in the league when healthy,” Lindsey adds.

Detroit Lions: Add another skill position player

It's a new era in Detroit as the coaching staff saw an overhaul. Jared Goff is the new quarterback after Matthew Stafford was traded to Goff's former team in the Los Angeles Rams.

While the Lions are likely still building toward what they hope are more fruitful seasons down the line, they'll still look to compete in 2021, and giving Goff another weapon to work with would be a welcome sight. The team does have Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams as the top two receiver options, but neither is striking a ton of fear into opposing secondaries.

They also have T.J. Hockenson at tight end and a stable of backs that includes D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, but adding one more dynamic piece may do this unit a world of good. While I would lean more toward a receiver, the team has shown interest in free-agent running back Todd Gurley.

I don't want to see another FA WR or even a Vet-FA RB added to the team unless an injury occurs to one of the top 2 at their position goes down.

Ride with the rebuild as it stands now and see what transforms in training camp

The Detroit Lions filled one of their two roster vacancies on Monday afternoon by signing free agent outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert.

Gilbert is a five-year veteran in the NFL after going undrafted in 2016. He spent the first three years of his career with the Green Bay Packers, making 18 game appearances and totaling 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

In 2019, he was traded to the Titans for a seventh-round pick. In Tennessee, he played in 11 games, started five, and picked up 22 tackles and 1.0 sacks.

Gilbert is an outside linebacker who will give the Lions some depth in the pass rushing department, while also bringing some decent skills in coverage (67.6 coverage grade in 2018).

That being said, he’ll have a tough time cracking Detroit’s lineup at outside linebacker. The Lions currently have Trey Flowers, Romeo Okwara, Julian Okwara, Charles Harris, Austin Bryant, and Robert McCray all challenging for spots at that position.
