Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, 29 of the 32 team training camps will kick off in unison on Tuesday, July 27th. It’s the first day camps can begin as dictated by the collective bargaining agreement. The teams playing in the Week 1 opener on Thursday night (the Buccaneers and Cowboys) will open on a different date.

In addition, Pelissero notes the league plans on having fan activities and events for the first Saturday of camp, which is July 31st. Fans will be allowed to attend Lions training camp, barring any changes to the state of Michigan’s planned ending of all COVID-19 restrictions on July 1st. The Lions are still finalizing the exact details of fan access and some changes from past years could still be implemented.

Taylor Decker had a very good 2020 season at left tackle for the Detroit Lions. The veteran played quite well as a bruising run blocker and posted his best season in pass protection. The strong play earned Decker a spot in the top 20 overall tackles from Pro Football Focus in their rankings entering the 2021 NFL season.

Decker checks in at No. 19, sandwiched between Taylor Lewan and Isaiah Wynn. The rankings do not differentiate between left and right tackle.

Decker’s health and consistency both saw an uptick in 2020 that gets prominently noted in the commentary,

It may have taken him a few years, but Decker is finally back to the level of play from his rookie campaign in 2016. That year, he produced an 81.9 PFF grade that ranked 14th among all tackles and still stands as the seventh-best mark PFF has seen from a rookie. But after Decker missed the first half of 2017, it took him until 2020 to reach the same heights. Last season, he cracked the top 10 in PFF grade with an 82.0 mark that was anchored by the fifth-best pass-blocking grade among tackles.
It’s a positive trend for Decker, who should continue to ascend with some stability at left guard in promising young Jonah Jackson to his inside shoulder.

PFF ranking Sewell No.31 when the kid hasn't played a snap of any football since Oregon's Bowl Game for 2019 season.

PFF also ranked first-rounder Penei Sewell at No. 31, a promising look but one that seems a little trigger-happy considering Sewell has yet to play a snap in the NFL or at right tackle.

26. JAMIE COLLINS SR., DETROIT LIONS

Detroit’s defense may have been a disaster in 2020, but Jamie Collins Sr. enjoyed his best season yet outside of New England. Collins recorded three pass breakups and an interception in coverage, added 11 total quarterback pressures and forced three fumbles on the year. He remains a very scheme-dependent player, but he at least showed he can be an impressive force away from Bill Belichick.

23. TREY FLOWERS, DETROIT LIONS

Flowers has been one of the lone bright spots on Detroit’s defense when healthy over the past two seasons. He ended each of the 2019 and 2020 seasons with PFF grades of at least 82.0, continuing his strong play both against the run and pass from his time with the Patriots. However, that 2020 grade came in just over 300 snaps, as Flower’s season was cut short by a fractured forearm.

The Lions have an opportunity for an improved defensive line in 2021 with his return and the additions on the interior this offseason.

31. PENEI SEWELL, DETROIT LIONS

I have all the confidence in the world in Sewell eventually climbing into the top 10 on this list, but we are ranking these tackles based on things as they stand — not the future.

Sewell led the Power Five in big-time blocks in 2019, and the 95.8 PFF grade he earned for his efforts — when he was an 18- and 19-year-old — still stands as the best mark in the PFF College era. He’s like a guided missile with the way he tracks down defenders in space. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the former Oregon Duck face a learning curve, considering he went up against plenty of lackluster competition in the Pac-12 and was in an offense that limited his true one-on-ones, but his long-term potential is stardom.

3. FRANK RAGNOW, DETROIT LIONS

Ragnow stumbled a bit out of the gates in his rookie season with Detroit, particularly as a pass protector (57.1 pass-blocking grade in 2018). However, those rookie snaps came at left guard. Since moving to center — a position where he dominated at Arkansas — Ragnow has steadily risen toward the upper tier of players at the position. His 80.3 overall grade this past season ranked third among all qualifying centers, and it earned him a record-breaking contract this offseason. The arrow is only pointing up for Ragnow as he enters his fourth NFL season.

7. T.J. HOCKENSON, DETROIT LIONS

Tight end is a position where it often takes players a year or two to acclimate to life in the NFL. We saw Hockenson start to do just that in 2020, raising his PFF grade from 60.5 as a rookie to 75.4 this past season.

The former top-10 pick recorded both receiving and run-blocking grades of at least 70.0 in 2020. He’s not ever going to offer the kind of tantalizing receiving ability that made Pitts the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history, but he does offer a solid all-around game that can make him a top-10 tight end in the league year in and year out.

11. MATTHEW STAFFORD, LOS ANGELES RAMS

26. JARED GOFF, DETROIT LIONS

A fresh start does players wonders, especially at the quarterback position. It also doesn’t hurt when you get a vote of confidence and your team takes Penei Sewell to protect you over some highly sought-after first-round quarterbacks. The Rams were third in the league in play-action pass attempts and tied for fifth in screen pass attempts. It will be imperative that the Lions help their QB and design an offense around what he’s comfortable with. Goff has a top-five passing grade when he has a clean pocket, is in rhythm and targets intermediate throws 10-19 yards downfield. He struggled when targeting 20-plus yard throws in the same scenario, earning the 29th-ranked passing grade out of 36 qualifying quarterbacks.

Getting the ball downfield in 2020 was a struggle, whether it was missed throws or negatively graded throws. This is probably why Goff led the league in passing yards on completions of 5 yards or less a season ago. The Lions seem to be building around Goff, and this is exactly what he needs to get his confidence back up so he can play at a high level again.

After the season is concluded (typically in February), the league’s accountants will determine how profitable the season was and the salary cap will be finalized at that time. But for the time being, general managers at least know how cautious they need to be with their team finances.

At the time of this publication, the Detroit Lions have 42 players signed for the 2022 season, accounting for an estimated $182.3 million of the salary cap next season, per OverTheCap.com. From a league perspective, that slots them in with an estimated 16th most salary cap available heading into next offseason.

Now, that number is still very fluid.

The Lions have 90 players on their current roster, and depending on who makes the 53-man roster, some of the 42 players may no longer be under contract next season and the estimated cap may be lower. There will also be players cut in the offseason which will lower the number even further. Additionally, there will be some leftover cap from the 2021 season that GM Brad Holmes can carry over into 2022 helping increase their spending amount.
It might afford us 1 more top FA if we can push most of his comp back a year

trying to make sure they get that running game going

The Detroit Lions are currently on Day 3 of their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) but they are still looking for ways to upgrade their roster. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Lions are hosting running back Todd Gurley for a try-out today.

Last season he signed with the Atlanta Falcons and produced another lackluster season (averaging just 3.5 yards per carry) which was lowlighted by a Week 7 debacle in Detroit. Accidently scoring and allowing the Lions a chance to come back and win—which they did.

While his days of being a lead back are behind him, there is still value to bringing in a veteran back to a young backfield. In Detroit, Gurley would be no better than the third option (and maybe the fourth, if we are being honest), but he is a productive pass blocker and could be reliable in emergency situations.

For now, it’s just a try-out, but the Lions do have an open spot on their 90-man roster after defensive tackle Joel Heath tore his ACL on Day 2 of OTAs.
