Invisible Man was pretty good. Some plot oddities here and there, but overall pretty decent.

I was at least glad they didn't go TOO hardcore with the jump scares and when they did it there wasn't a giant BOOM or HUGE HOLLYWOOD cliche noise just to get everyone to scream.

The restaurant scene with all of the sudden the floating knife and then the sister got me good, I had to rewind... but it wasn't overdone, just creepy as F

End of day her switch from traumatized to badass was a little too quick for me but the film was 2 hours long. I think they realized they had to wrap it up somehow and there wasn't much else they could do.

7/10, I know some family/friends (women) that would refuse to watch this after the first 20 or so minutes. I'd say the first half was a 8/10, second half 6/10... kind of went a little Hollywood 'Hollow Man' there towards the end lol.

Wife told me she found us a thriller to watch... Turned out to be a Lifetime movie with a thriller plot. You can only imagine how thrilled I was...

Reading the description I was kinda iffy but I was pleasantly surprised...very good movie. I would give it about the same rating 7/10

We looked at that one...I could tell by the plot it was a Lifetime movie. Even the cover gives it away at this point lol

I saw The Hunt a couple days ago. I would suggest everyone to watch it. It definitely wasn't a horror movie...more of a light thriller, action with some comedy but very enjoyable.

Yea I should have known better! Desperate things can happen when you’re hunting for new material.

watched one decent flick last night though... Our House (2018). Interesting concept.

Also watched The Nanny (2018). Started off ok, but then took a blindside turn towards fantasy land. Trailer tagged it as horror... Wasn’t even close.

hmm, screenplay by the guy that wrote moon (based off a 2010 movie, with a slightly higher IMDB score), think I might give the original a look first.

watched underwater the other day. think i saw a 15 second clip before viewing and was thinking it was going to be like the cave (2005). though guess it was closer to the deep sea version of the 2017 deep space film life. during the brief actual deep sea underwater stuff I was thinking to myself i would have liked it better if it went for more of a storyline from the horror game Soma. That said, those brief moments there were some shots were it made it seem like they didn't have the effects down. All in all, not a bad watch.

Brahms: The Boy II (2020)

You could certainly do worse for popcorn entertainment, but this was a very disappointing followup from the original installment. Instead of expanding on the creativity that the original established, this movie blew it all up and went with the clichéd supernatural route. I personally liked the original, even though it wasn't received as well by the masses. It wasn't groundbreaking but the twist at the end was very memorable and unique. Deviating away from that took a lot of luster away from this sequel. Everything about this film felt familiar and exhaustive, like we've seen this plot & sequencing of events too many times to care.

This movie sets itself up nicely for some solid character work & a general sense of unease in the opening scene. But once the family decampment happens where the doll is found it falls off a cliff. The progression thereafter was predictable in virtually every way which made it somewhat painful. And for the majority of the film very little of interest happens. The boy finds the doll, draws some violent pictures, refuses to eat his dinner, says the doll is making him do things, etc... Allthewhile we get sledgehammered with dull "look here's a creepy doll" moments when the doll moves its eyes or head. It didn't even explain how the doll was rebuilt after having its head obliterated into dust in the first film. I guess the spirit inside the doll knows how to rebuild the vessel? Any momentum it manages to build sort of gets lost within the bad jump scares & odd flashback sequences. The climax, along with the scenes that precede or follow, was rushed & didn't necessarily clarify anything of merit. And no one was surprised by the ending that dared to imply yet another film to follow.

If it weren't for blockbuster level budget, cinematography & CG this film would have been brutal. Cast was decent, but the material was lackluster. (SPOILERS) Essentially it boils down to a semi-possessive plot where a supernatural doll bullies a boy into doing things and ultimately gets bested by being thrown into a furnace. At just 80-some-odd minutes this film should have felt quick, but it manages to trudge through its paces in exhaustive fashion. As a standalone, and possibly even ignoring the existence of the original, this film was mildly entertaining. But as a sequel it was a frustrating & dissatisfying experience.

Derivative & clichéd, but mildly entertaining... 5/10

The Grudge (2020)

Everything about this film screamed cash-grab from the outset of its announcement, but bringing in Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother 2016) to direct it & a cast featuring Lin Shaye gave me some hope. The movie ties in well enough to the trilogy events in 2004 to 2006 and should be satisfying to the fans of the franchise.

The movie starts off well with some truly interesting plot points by 'taking the curse to the states', but then it slowly grinds itself through an hour of convoluted timelines in combination with multiple interconnected stories. It doesn't rely on jump scares, even though there were plenty, but it does build a decent amount of suspense. The progression of multiple timeline & stories does sap some of the tension out of the entire experience but I still found it to be enthralling. I understand the critique though as the general audience prefers stories in chronological/linear order. But this storyline wasn't overly complicated, and the timelines do become more clear by the time the plot it built up for its climax (for those paying enough attention). This film had some genuinely creepy moments, but I admit they had a level of predictability and there were a handful of silly scares which deteriorated some of the convincing nature of the film. Some of the underlying horror themes of pain & suffering helped provide more grim authenticity to the film. It definitely dives in deeper into the material than just setups & scares. Acting was mostly good across the board. Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) was the only actor I had a problem with (her expressions were wildly unconvincing). The script provided some good character & relationship building. I liked how each character had their own struggles with tragedy and how the curse afflicted them differently.

Overall Pesce's film was admirable. It features good acting and is well made, showcasing some good attention to atmosphere & detail, and providing some decent chills & thrills. It definitely took itself more serious than some of the previous films in this franchise, and in that way it was more interesting than merely watching the curse claim its victims. But it does take a significant amount of attention to digest it completely, as the convoluted nature of its progression can get a bit tedious at times. And ultimately the climax didn't feel very satisfying. But I do feel like it was worth the watch and I'd recommend it to the fans of the franchise. I don't think it deserves the 4.2/10 on IMDB or 20-23% consensus on RT.

Decent reboot that falls a bit short, but still satisfying... 6.5/10

Underwater (2020)

Been a minute since we've explored the underwater neo-creature genre. Older classics like The Abyss (1989), DeepStar Six (1989), Leviathan (1989), The Rift (1990), Deep Rising (1998) or The Cave (2005) come to mind. Unless you want to open the discussion up to sharks, crocs, etc. Underwater wasn't a bad watch, but it was a rather pedestrian effort.

The horror/thriller elements in this movie were rather weak. It's filled with plenty of well-executed jumpscares to make it a decent enough watch, but it lacks suspense. And some of the effects were rough, especially for cgi. The sequencing is fast-paced and littered with fast-cut scenes, which prevents us from appreciating much more than merely the action. I think a lot of suspense and drama was removed due to that.

Unfortunately they used very little effort to flesh out the characters other than driving the plot using their job skills, and the creatures weren't a strong enough antagonist to distract us from that, so in the end these characters end up seeming like cattle. The writers give brief tragic backstories (dialogue driven) in an attempt to make you care about these characters but it just fails to sustain itself for any length of time. The actors weren't too bad though, even though the script was weak. There were many times where some of the dialogue was lost due to other sounds of the film, but luckily this wasn't an issue that detracted any plot points. TJ Miller provided some decent off-the-cuff humor but it was short-lived.

Overall it was an ok watch with decent production values, but the story itself was lackluster and none of the action produced anything memorable. The setup & aftermath were displayed as news reports in newspapers. So it takes somewhat of a leap of faith to connect some dots. Thankfully it wasn't necessary since the movie didn't really implore you to connect anything meaningful.

Action thriller that lacks suspense & story... 5/10

Monster Party (2018)

What a cool idea this was. Crime thriller meets horror, but displayed in a way like it was 2 separate movies that eventually collided into 1. Good in theory, but somewhere along the way it loses its identity and goes into a completely different splatter category. Yes movies like this have been done before where psychos do psycho things, and there was gratuitous amounts of obvious blood and gore. But it was still pretty fun!

The first half of this film was better IMO. Punctuated by the beginning of the party in which our cast of burglars are attempting to make a score. It was reminiscent of Don't Breath (2016), maybe mixed with Get Out (2017). The introductions to the cast of serial killers were my favorite parts of the movie. Each "monster" having their own brand of sadistic psycho. Where I think this movie loses itself is after the "incident" that disrupts the entire party. Because after that it was less-than-thrilling series of splatter events that don't really add too much other than trying a little hard to develop some characters into psychos & their incompetence. The mayhem & violence is fun & all but it erased all the suspense. The basement scene could have been a better addition, but sadly it ended up being very unnecessary. They built it up to be something big and then it was over in the blink of an eye. IMO that "monster" should have played a larger role. Maybe throw in a cat & mouse series of events leading up to the climax. Woulda shoulda coulda. The climax was fun & different though and recaptured some of what it tried to build earlier in the film.

Elliot, played by Kian Lawley, was by far my favorite character. His portrayal of the serial killer was far better than anybody else, thanks in large part to the script. Aside from being the asshole from the moment he's introduced you could tell he had a devilish & manipulative nature about him. The rest of the cast was pretty good. Didn't care for the Alexis character, and I think Julian McMahon & Lance Reddick should have switched characters. Probably could have done without those 2 younger douchebags altogether as they were more of a distraction than anything.

Overall this was a cool idea with some good moments, but it falters along the way with a string of forgettable clichés. Could have used more to the story and/or less characters. Still worth the watch.

Cool idea but lacked execution... 5.5/10

I'm glad you mentioned Deep Rising, because it did it SO much better and is one of my fave films. Famke Janssen and Treat Williams were great, and Anthony Heald was so over the top ridiculous in that movie, it was brilliant.

Underwater I think would've been a better movie without the monster thrown in and if they used the whole claustrophobia factor of crawling through tight spaces. They could've just done away with the monster and made it a story about an underwater mining crew experiencing a catastrophe, but I guess it'd be too closely linked to Deepwater Horizon.

I am a HUGE advocate of creature features... studios for some reason want to constantly push the 'paranormal' (prob. because it's cheap) which is boring as F IMO because it's always accompanied with a loud 'boom' noise and cheap 'scares'. That said, I'm going to going to give Underwater a 4/10, I was really hoping for something decent, but this movie just disappointed on so many levels. Outside of the Aliens clone job, it was just... not fun. Deep Rising was a blast from start to finish. Abyss was revolutionary in terms of the CGI, and Leviathan while a rip of Alien gets a free pass because it was so long ago.

I basically spaced out for a good 20+ minutes on Underwater and was browsing the Internet while it was playing in the background.

I heard it's kind of comparable to Tucker and Dale? Is that true?
