Actually the helmet contact and shoulder contact were simultaneous. However, his helmet his Lawrence's helmet after Lawrence dropped his helmet level.

No, the officials confirmed that the helmet was first then the wrap.

And the helmet made contact because of what Lawrence did. Again, unless you think Wade could suddenly sink his helmet into his abdomen, it was impossible to avoid.

No, coming to a near complete stop and losing all forward momentum would've. What Wade did is exhibit pure wrapping technique. It was a penalty because of Lawrence's decision to lower his helmet.
And even if that is true, under this rule it is targeting. Show us where in the rule it leaves any room for an exception for that contact if the 'defenseless player' is moving part of their body into that contact. You can't.

The rule is the problem. And even many of your own fans up here today agree.

Incidental contact is still going to be called targeting because the rule sucks. And it isn't going to go away because of worry over lawsuits for brain damage later in life. This is football now.

Well how they call it they do pretty much expect the defender to defy physics.

Proper tackling form would have avoided leading with the crown of the helmet, as well as avoiding a penalty.

Don't worry, maybe one day the Suckeyes will learn how to tackle.

Yes this is the point.

Again, what Wade did was a natural form tackle where it's physically impossible for your head to not be in front of your shoulders due to human anatomy. It was called targeting because Lawrence lowered his helmet level to meet Wade's. It's physically impossible for your helmet to not be ahead of your shoulders. That's the point.
Watch the video in this article and notice Lawrence's head whip backwards, from the helmet to helmet hit.

Leading with the crown of the helmet is targeting.

If you are trying to tackle someone, you have to lower your center of gravity lower than his.

Ever play football? If so you should know this.

Now then, to lower one's center of gravity one must lower his body mass. Since Humans bend forward at the waist, this is the only means to do this, along with bending the knees.

So to test this, hold your arms at your side, feet shoulder width apart, now bend forward. Notice your head moves out farther than any other extremity.

End of class.

Any questions?

All form tackles are eyes down, head before shoulders. I have an entire thread with pictures for you... or do you need a box of crayons and a nanny to draw it out for you?

And this is why it is a horrible rule. At the end of the day, it's fucking football. The form that Wade exhibited is the same form made on 90% of wrap tackles around the midsection. Unfortunately for Wade, Lawrence dropped his helmet level and it created incidental contact. That's the crux of this entire conversation.
And it was still called the way it will always be called because of the rule.

They want to look like they are helping to prevent brain injuries. They will error on the side of the player that gets hit 'most' of the time. The rule has all kinds of room for people being pissed off. It is still going to be called that way.

And this is why it needs to be changed. As was brought up before, it's a horrible rule that was put into place so the NCAA can act like they're trying to care about player safety.

Great. Stop blaming the refs.
