I thought a 1st made sense for teams that thought they would be picking in the late 20's or later. Trading away a possible top 5-10 pick overall when you need a QB is another story
We'll see how this unfolds. If they somehow claw their way into the postseason then this will look like a genius move.

Anyone the Steelers have drafted in the past 10 years in the upper rounds in the secondary has sucked big donkey balls, so if they want to improve back there under current management this is the only way to do it. I ain't gonna bitch about this one, it's a young kid and maybe he'll grow with Mason. Or maybe they'll both suck and set the franchise back 10 years, who the hell knows.

Not the worst trade in the world since you're getting a young player that fills a need but your seasons effectively over this year and even if Rudolph plays well there are still a myriad of over issues with the roster and your looking at a top 15 pick.

It would've been a far better move to hold onto that pick because you could probably draft a player at Minkah's level or better. Reeks of desperation for a GM and coach that know that seat is starting to become uncomfortably hot.

But boy are the Dolphins reaping the benefits of desperate people. With there 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders, and two 3rds they are position to get good in a hurry if they play their cards right.
Some truth to that sentence. But this feels more like a last-ditch effort from Tomlin more than Colbert. Tomlin appears intent to ride off into the sunset if this shit goes sideways.

Terrible trade for the Steelers. That is likely a top 10 pick for a free safety.

It's a risk for sure, admittedly I liked it a whole lot more before Ben's season ending announcement, but one I still like right now.

What he is...The Steelers think he's the long term answer at FS, currently weakest position on the DEF. Sean Davis was mediocre at best and a FA to be. He plugs in at FS.

Worst case...Rudolph sucks, the pick is top 5, and Ben doesn't comeback in 2020....now they're in full blown rebuild...he's young enough to be a part of it...they're not going to out bad MIA for Tua...the early look at the 2020 prospects, they could be missing out on WR, the kid from Bama, or the DE from Iowa. The S from LSU sticks out as a player they would've targeted in the top 10. So they take a shot with Fitz now.

You know how many good ab prospects are there for next year? Like would be top pick this pst year good. At least 2 of those and another 3 top ten.

I'm happy. I think it was the right move.

Steelers suck at drafting DBs and really need competent safeties. Currently have 0 competent safeties.

Minkah is going to go right to starter at FS. Especially now that Sean Davis has a torn labrum.

This move says the Steelers aren't giving up on the season. This is them showing they have confidence in Mason. Mason is talented and looked really good in Pre-season and against the Seahawks.

Even if they had a top 10 pick, they might be drafting a safety hoping for someone as good as Minkah anyway. They might not have been drafting a QB.

Minkah is a leader.

Miami tanks, and the good players want out. Pittsburgh isn't tanking. They are still trying to win. They don't have THAT MANY holes. Mostly have to make some personnel changes, like firing Moncrief into the sun.

The middle of the defense has been the worst spot though. This is a big upgrade.

Honestly guys... I think the Steelers are in trouble this year. I think you guys will regret this move. A quality veteran QB covers up a lot of mistakes and bad plays. I think without Ben there they all get exposed.

The Steelers (like the patriots) are a dying breed of sorts. The era of “franchise QB” is coming to an end. The guys currently at the QB position aren’t the prototypical franchise QB players we’ve seen of the past. Plus players aren’t the same. It’s the “me” generation. Teams aren’t built for sustained success anymore. The Steelers and pats model is fading away. Just look at Seattle. Just a few years ago they had a monster of a team. A great D, a young QB, etc... now they are a shell of themselves. Still good... but not dominant.

The times are changing. We shall see

Could be right, could be wrong... Lotta IF's to play out here before we can bury this trade.

IF Rudolph stinks....
IF the teams flops this year and that pick is top 5-10...
IF Ben doesn't come back...
(or) IF Ben DOES come back and stinks...
IF another QB (not Tua) is a future franchise QB and he could have been within reach...

The more I think about it... The more I like this gamble.

Only guy still trying on that squad. And he was doing it at a position he hates (SS) on a team he wanted off of.

I don’t think Rudolph is gonna stink. In fact, I think Ben will attempt a comeback and there will be a bit of a QB controversy there. This isn’t about getting Tua... it’s about not mortgaging the future on the HOPE that things will be ok now.

Being an effective QB just isn’t about talent. It’s about leadership. The pats got incredibly lucky with Bledsoe that he allowed Brady the chance to be that leader when he took over. He not only helped Brady with the tools he relinquished that leadership role... even though he was still young and had just signed a 100M dollar contract. I think Rudolph was a steal. It’s his team now... will the fans and organization allow that to happen?

I think Ben's belief he can come back from this injury is overly optimistic. He might try. TB tried it himself, and only played one more game after his elbow injury before he finally retired.

At any rate, I don't think Ben gets cleared for team activity before the start of next season anyway.

last week it looked like Fitzpatrick plugged into the Steelers defense would be an excellent risk to take, albeit a costly one the Steelers rarely take. this week I don't know...still very risky, but now the Offense is a complete unknown. Overall I tend to like the move, Tomlin&Co have really screwed the pooch lately trying to get secondary help thru the draft.( some FA signings have sucked as well though..Donte Moncrief)

You may be right... it’s the expected reaction of a player when he gets injured: this won’t stop me. I’m not blaming him. He’s gonna be around the team. Will he let Rudolph emerge as that leader? Will the organization allow it? We will see.

Agreed. There's a lot of flaws to the belief that this trade is essentially "giving away" their future franchise QB. That is an incredible leap of faith to believe that. Sure the QB class is loaded, but there is almost assuredly going to be a lot of reaching from desperate teams for those guys that don't necessarily deserve to be top 10-15. If Ben does attempt a return, then the Steelers likelihood of drafting a QB was next to zero. They'd be looking at drafting another defensive playmaker yet again, or maybe an elite WR. And looking at how young the Steelers are now, this nucleus could already be rebuilding while still contending. And I'm all for it.

People are fickle about franchise QBs.

Yeah, all unknowns.

That's a bridge to cross next year. Franchise QB's don't often get to leave content.

Miami and Cincinnati were going to be drafting ahead of the Steelers before this, anyway, and they will both be looking QB. They'll probably be slotted somewhere between 8-15... So potentially a reach, but like others have said, maybe worth it for a guaranteed starter if Mason turns out to be a decent QB.
